With all the great sales – you want to buy it all.

It’s amazing how a super sale add appeal to something you would normally pass up. A brown pair of bell bottoms? Normally I’d say no, but they’re an extra 30% off! Ew. No.

Let me show you how I sale shop.

First, I go in with my specific style goals in mind. That way I am able to buy things that will fill my needs and I’ll save money doing so.

If something is just beautiful and doesn’t necessarily fit into my goals then I ask myself these two questions…

1. What is the outfit I can make wearing this piece tomorrow with what I already have in my closet?

2. Do I already own something like it? (this is especially helpful if I find black pants, jeans and/or a gray shirt as I own PLENTY of those).

Finally, if I’m refusing to bend to my own rules and I’m going all West Side Story with the love affair of whatever I’m holding, I walk away. They say if you love something, let it go. I do that physically and see if it comes back into my mind. If it does – winner, winner, chicken dinner. If I’ve forgotten about it 20 minutes later – it was just a fling.

Now, with those things in mind, here is a list of pieces you can get great deals on this time of year…

SWIMSUITS

No one can be more ready for fall than I am right now. NO ONE. But I am going to freakin’ love myself next summer when I pull out the name-brand swim suit I got on super sale, so now is the time to buy suits.

SUMMER BASICS

The great sales are on because stores are trying to rid themselves of summer inventory. So let’s stock up on things we’ll need next summer. Of course just because we’re now in a month with more than 4 letters doesn’t mean it’s going to cool of tomorrow (although the weather’s been pretty AWESOME). That just means you’ll get a little extra use out of the items for a few more weeks.

The thing I would advise about buying summer pieces, is stick to the basics. Simple, quality pieces that you got at a discount are going to last you and your taste well into summer 2018. Whereas bold things may not jive with what you want to wear once the hot weather rolls around again.

LAYERING PIECES

Tanks you can wear alone now and easily layer underneath a jacket or sweater later are the sweet spot of purchases right now. You can wear them all you want while the weather is warm, then get even MORE use out of them under jackets and sweaters later.

I’m all about saving you from filling your closet with “junk food” purchases that will prevent you from looking your best!

Hello Summer Sales!

Roll out those lazy hazy crazy days of summer…

If you’re a Gilmore Girls fan, that crazy song will be in your head the rest of the day. Ha!

Summer is here and with it (besides the over-consumption of watermelon and ice cream) comes great summer sales!

I’ve pulled together a list of sales going on at stores in West Town Mall. It’s cool in there and you can try things on instead of wondering if it’s the right size as you hit the “buy” button. Also two words: Auntie. Anne’s.

Remember: when shopping a sale you need to make sure you stick to your style plan. Don’t just go buying up things because they’re a great deal. Now is the time to shop for what you need at a great price!

It’s also a great time to be thinking of fall basics. Sometimes stores will pull out all their inventory, so if you come across anything that is long sleeve or for cooler weather, don’t bypass it because it’s not that season yet (Oh, but it’s right around the corner!! *squeals). Snag it at a super discounted price now / love yourself for doing so when you reach into your closet in a few months and pull out something new, later.

Express – Extra 30% off clearance – for a total of 70% off the original price. Someone stop me from buying more jeans from them, I’m serious.

Dillard’s has a lot on sale – their bra section is where my bra section comes from. I love their stuff because it’s quality and it’s actually being sold at a sale price. P.S.: this sale only gets better throughout the month of July so keep checking back!

Ann Taylor has 40% off everything. Everything? Everything.

Altar’d State – Man do they know how to put on a sale. I don’t step in the store unless they’re offering me 1,000% off, which they do this time of year, so bye!

Pandora is also running a sale, so stop in there to get a discount on some quality jewelry. Seriously – I got a ring from there and I loooove it. I’m especially happy with the fact that it’s not going to wear down or turn my finger green. Ew.

Bath and Body Works of course is running their mega deals and so is Yankee Candle! (AKA: time to start thinking Christmas presents).

Soo many great deals at West Town Mall, just make sure you shop responsibly. ;)

Here’s how to avoid shopping sale drunk.

Be safe out there.

Strategies for Shopping Tax-Free

The lure of tax-free shopping is real.

If a store had a sign out front that said everything was 10% off I wouldn’t give it the time of day. Yet that’s basically what tax-free shopping is and I’m willing to brave the crowds to shop out from under the governments thumb! Muahahaha.

There’s a couple things you need to keep in mind when shopping this weekend so you don’t shop sale-drunk. It’s a term I’ve coined that means: you’ve over indulged on the sweet nectar of a sale that you’re buying things you wouldn’t normally wear, just because you’re getting a deal.

1. Have a list going in.

Stick to the list like gum in a child’s thick head of hair. I mean it.

Your list needs to include all the holes you have in your closet so you can fill those for the rest of the season.

2. If you’re unsure of something, walk away.

The walk away method works wonders (and saves hundreds). If you’re not sold on an item, put it back and see if it pops back up in your mind. If it does and you can’t get it to go away, go buy it.

I love doing this because it’s a great way to make sure that you really love something.

3. Buy things that will work for you into the next season.

And to show you examples of that, I pulled really gorgeous pieces from Francesca’s.

Expertly Shop a Sale

If you’re on a spending freeze, I would highly suggest you keep a ten mile buffer zone between you and the mall because the sales are craaayyy-zzzeee good right now.

But just because they’re offering 150% off already marked down items, doesn’t mean you need to run around swiping your credit card like you’re in a sword fight. Or the metaphor I like to go with is – stay sober, don’t get sale-drunk.

It’s so easy to get in the store and immediately become intoxicated by all the savings. But what usually happens in that scenario is you make decisions bases on prices and not need and you end up with things you regret.

Let’s avoid that. Let me be your designated shopper…

1. Go in knowing what you need.

If there are certain things your summer wardrobe is lacking keep those in mind as you shift through the mounds of $2 items. Even if it’s something general like, “I need more shirts to run around in on Saturdays.” It helps you buy more wisely if you have your needs in mind.

2. Start thinking of the next season.

Sometimes retailers will pull out pieces from their winter collections that didn’t sell in January. Don’t disregard these. It’s easy to pass them by because you can’t walk out of the store and put on a sweater, however, Future You will LOVE the fact that you picked up that very versatile striped cardigan for fifty cents. Even when you’re looking at summer tops, start to consider how they’ll layer so you can get even more use out of them.

3. Walk around with it for a second.

This is my go-to, fail safe method for deciding on a piece. Even if the shirt costs $10, if you are unsure of it, or if it doesn’t fit you just right, walk around with it for a second and let the fumes of a great deal settle while you think in real-world terms. Where will you actually wear this? Can you tell me other pieces it will go with or bring together for a look that is truly you? Walk around, ask yourself those questions then decide from there.

Bonus: Do a little Christmas shopping.

Seriously now is the time to get a lot of Christmas shopping done. I’ve already bought three presents that I saved loads of money on by doing so. Future Me is going to do a happy dance.

Successfully Shop Tax Free

blazer

Good old Uncle Sam is throwing us a bone this weekend, and giving us a whopping 10% off all our clothing purchases.

It’s a small bone, but we’ll take it! It’s also a genius ploy they’ve got going – giving us a time limit and all. The savings and the urgency combined can send you into a sale drunk shopping frenzy. So I want to help sober you up with 9 words that will show you how to walk away with your nose clean, your closet stocked, and your wallet giving you a slow clap.

Now is the time to make a big purchase.

Your wallet’s shooting me a confused look. Allow me to explain…

Yes you save on everything you buy this weekend, but unless you have kids to buy for or a closet to build from scratch, the dangers of you buying things you won’t wear, far outweigh the benefits of saving 10%. Between the crowds and the picked over merchandise (I’m looking at you, Forever21 jewelery wall) it’s easy to make a rushed bad decision. So instead, focus your efforts on the one thing you really need.

Last year, for example, I purchased a black blazer. It’s a bee-utiful blazer that I’ll have and wear for many years to come. It’s from Banana Republic, so it’s of impeccable quality. And you know what? I saved a lot of money by buying it tax free.

Think about the one quality piece you’re really needing to buy, and go get that sucker this weekend!
