Summer Sales: How to Keep Your Wits About You

summer sales, summer style, what to wear this summer, how to shop a sale, summer sale shopping, knoxville fashion blogger

If you were confused by the title of this post, then the rest of the content isn’t for you.

The sales happening currently (and I do mean right this very minute #amazonprime) can put you in a daze, a fog, a stupor or a high if you’re not careful.

Between the big Amazon sale and the Nordstom sale not to mention the sales happening at every other store in the world ever – there’s a lot of money to be saved (but really spent). So let my words be a cold compress to your head as we calm ourselves down for a minute, drink a glass of water and get our wits about us.

Tip #1

Before you even seriously shop, take stock of what you need.

Go through your closet and your home and look around as though you were on a tight budget and could only replace one thing. One single thing. This will either help you whittle off the things that aren’t truly needed or have the reverse effect and make you realize everything you’ve thought about replacing in the last 6 months. Either way – you’ll have a good idea of what you really need to buy.

Tip #2

Go through the websites with sales and after you’ve found what you need, wishlist a few things.

The Nordstrom sale doesn’t open to the public until Friday. This year, I’ve wishlist-ed two things that I want so when it opens on Friday, I can go directly to my list, add the things and be on my way. I’m not buying anything I haven’t thought about for days.

This helps me to not buy anything “just because it’s on sale.” I’m buying it with my wits about me. And I’m taking advantage of the deals helping to quiet my FOMO (anyone else feel sad if they don’t buy something from a major sale?)

Always check the return policy before purchasing and remember there’s always Poshmark ;)

Happy Sale Season!

Sales from Around West Town Mall

This time of year can be so overwhelming with the number of sales going on.

You especially want to avoid shopping sale drunk and buying things just because “they’re a good deal.” So I did what I had to do and scoured West Town Mall for the best deals both for now and a few for later. Remember, you can always Christmas shop too! (thank yourself later for that one)

Dillard’s:
Shoe sale: 65% off good mix of current season and some fall booties. Great stop to update your heel collection
Other select shoes are 40% including some Kate Spade which is rare.
Swim sale: 33-50% off all the good brands. Even if you don’t need a suit, check it out for cover ups – they have some pretty ones that would add a nice light piece to your summer wardrobe and they are on sale as well.
Swim towels are on sale in the home section, they are 25% off – most were under $25 and they’re HUGE
Leggings sale: right before you get to the lingerie section, but you’re not quiet in kids yet, there is a legging section where they currently have 65% off really great leggings. Some are work out and some are the athleisure kind. Be sure to check that out a lot of good deals in there.
Lingerie sale: their bras and panties are always great brands and outlast the other places that also have annual sales this time of year. I’d much rather spend money on something I know will last.
Forever21 has sandals for $9 and flip flops for $2

Tips to Keep Your Shopping on Track During Sale Season

dillards, west town mall, sale, how to shop a sale, shopping, semi-annual sale

Beginning Black Friday week through January clearance sales, its a workout just trying to hold onto your wallet and not buy every little thing you see on sale. At least that’s how I explain my brief absence in the gym *grimace face.

There are so. many. clearance sales going on right now with retailers tempting you with deep discounts so as to clear their shelves of merchandise and potentially clutter up your own. But we’re not going to let them! At least, not without forming a plan first…

I’ve put together shopping tips to help you navigate the sales and stay on track with both your budget and your style. And help you avoid adding more things to get rid of this spring when you’re no longer sale-drunk and ready to get rid of everything but your skivvies.

One: Look at what you own.
Devote as little or as much time to this as you’d like, but just be sure to get a good idea of what’s in your closet before walking out the door to shop.

This will do a couple things…It will dampen impulse buys because you laid eyes on the 4 leopard sweaters you already own (I’m looking at you, Elizabeth). And it will give you a clear direction of what you need especially if you’re passing a lot of pants but not a lot of sweaters or button up tops. One more thing it will do is show you how much room you have in your closet. If you’re already packed this will hopefully motivate you not to buy anything just because it’s on sale.

Two: Set boundaries.
Setting a budget is good, but take it one step further and carry that budget in cash. This will give you a tangible amount to spend and again help you avoid buying things just because they’re on sale.

Set a time frame for yourself as well. This is one of my favorite things to do because I can take forever making decisions sometimes, so the thrill of having a set time helps me become a hard-core decision maker. It really makes it into a game, which is fun and I always walk away with fewer impulse buys.

Take a friend! We all have friends we shop with that we know are going to get us to spend money – DON’T TAKE THAT FRIEND. Instead take the one that’s going to be realistic with you and ask the hard questions…”Do you REALLY need the sweater with the kitty cat floating in space??”

And remember the tried and true Walk Away Rule. If you walk away and you still think about it, go back. But if the item is forgotten the minute you spot pretzel bites then you didn’t really want it anyway.

Three: Know what to avoid…
Go into this knowing what your vices are. Mine? Black pants. Last count 17 pairs is what I own? SO knowing this and my love for leopard, anything I pick up in those categories have to go through a real strict process.

Again, take the sale goggles off and really look at something you’re wanting. Does it look cheap? Has it been tried on multiple times and look like it? Be sure you’re not drunk on the price scribbled in red pen and actually NEED what it is you’re holding.

Watch for overly trendy items. A cut or pattern that was super hot this season may not be by the time fall/winter rolls around next year.

Four: Know what to look for…
Basics like boots, blazers, jackets, button downs – those are all good items to load up on when they’re on sale this time of year. They’re usually high ticket items and if you get them at a quality store, they’ll last you a long, long time. So in your perusal of your closet in step number one look for anything that needs to be replaced/updated and shop for that.

Don’t be afraid to look for out of season items. Make sure they fit your style and fill a need and if so – go for it! You’ll love yourself when it comes time to switch over.

Whether you’re sale shopping or not, it’s always good to shop with these two things in mind that are really the basics for good style: does the item help you convey the message you want to send and does it make you feel good about yourself?

Sales going on:
Altar’d State: Extra 30% off sale (this discount will go even deeper, so look around now then if there’s something you’re on the fence about, check back later). This is a great place to stock up on jewelry!

Banana Republic: Extra 60% off sale styles and 40% off regular-priced items. The best place to get basics like good pants and button down shirts, sweaters, blazers (my favorite blazer came from them). If you need items for work – this is the place!

J Crew: 50% off sale items. Great place to get pieces for the holidays next year or (a swing in the opposite direction) items for your summer wardrobe.

Fiore Boutique: They are moving in the mall so they are having a moving sale with 70% off everything in the store! Start buying Christmas gifts for next year!

Dillard’s: They’re having a great sale on coats and boots and also a really good clearance event going on so check that out.

Dillard’s Sale Picks

dillard's sale, dillard's, west town mall, dillard's in west town mall, what to buy on sale, summer sale, summer dillard's sale, summer time shopping, what to buy at a sale, how to shop a sale, knoxville dillard's, what to buy at dillard's, what to buy at the dillard's sale

All of the above.

Just know, this time of year there’s no “quick stops” into the mall. Every where you go there’s a fantastic sale sign that’s REALLY hard to ignore.

I’m hoping this quick guide will help you know what to look for/pick up at a good sale. Sometimes sales can be overwhelming and you end up in a fog (or as I like to call it – “Sale Drunk“) and you make purchases that you regret when you sober up the next day.

How do you avoid this? You go in knowing two things – what you need and what your total budget is.

You set parameters like – I have to be able to think of how I can immediately wear this with at least 2 outfits. Sometimes I do this…

Visualize your closet and you in it looking for something to wear – is that piece something you see yourself grabbing? Or do you more easily see it going into the “donate” pile in a few months? Sometimes that really helps me decide.

Okay, before I turn this into another post, let’s talk about what you can get at Dillard’s right now. They’re having a fantastic sale, in fact I’ve already purchased the necklace in this picture (except in pink so this black one may still be there).

Let’s dive in…WAIT, before we do – some of these items may be even CHEAPER in store (I know for sure the necklace is because I got it for $5 cheaper than the website lists) so be sure to go in Dillard’s at West Town Mall and see what deal you can get!

Post Work-Out Neem Body Wash – this falls into the category 0f “great gift.” I don’t know that I would use it, but I know people that might and I like to get a head start on Christmas presents, so this bag that was once $50 and is now marked down to $25 is perfect for that stash.

Kate Spade Earrings – WHY DON’T I OWN THESE?! Haha I’m all about stripes and these cuties are PERFECT. Marked down from $48 to $33. They would look so cute with gosh, just a t-shirt!

Pearl Earrings – here’s another tid-bit about sale shopping – buy things you need in advance of the need. If you know you’ve got a big event coming up next year, buy earrings like these which are marked down from $45 to $22 so that you don’t have to panic-buy anything and you have these on hand. Not to mention they’re gorrrgeous.

Hunter Boots – Let me unleash my beef with Target for a second in the form of this conversation…

Target: Hey every body, great news! You can all look like Joanna Gaines in tall black Hunter boots for a fraction of the cost!

Me: YAAAAAYYYY *sets alarm, wakes up at midnight…

Target: Hold please.

Me: *dances to hold music

Target: JOKE PARTY. We’re not making those, ya silly goose!

Me: :-|

Get your own dern tall black Hunter boots at Dillard’s for $96.

Tassel Necklace – The texture and movement of this piece is perfect for maxi dresses this summer. And I really like the addition of the gold sphere, I feel as if it gives it more of a flow.

Dooeny & Burke Backpack – I’m on the hunt for a good neutral backpack – because UH backpacks are awesome. This one is on sale for $103 down from $148. That’s a pretty good discount for such a quality bag.

Fossil Tote – this big-ole-bag would serve a myriad of purposes and is just about $50 off. Down to $103 from $148. Again, if a tote bag is on your list of needs, while one hundred bucks seems like a lot, it’s still less than the original price, and you’re getting real quality.

I hope this helps you stay out of the sale fog and buy things you’re going to use and love!

Oo! One more thing – Clinique at Dillard’s is offering a 4 piece gift set for any purchase over $40!

What to Do When You’re in a Shopping Rut

shopping, style help, help with shopping, how to shop, how to love shopping, how to shop well

When “sale” doesn’t give you butterflies.

Let’s first talk about the reasons for this post… I’ve found myself in several conversations recently where we started lamenting the fact that there’s not just one store you can walk into that has everything you want.

That, combined with other conversations where I hear things like, “Oh I would never go in there,” or, “that store’s for _(insert either young or old) people__.” It got me to thinking…

What should we do when we’re in a shopping rut? Do things out of the ordinary.

Start by shopping where you normally wouldn’t (in that place that’s for a perceived older or younger crowd). This is going to either open our eyes to new things, help us discover a store we would have otherwise written off, and best case scenario it’s going to provide us with an item that will enliven our whole closet. Did I say best case scenario – I meant, dream world scenario ;)

Worst case? We’ll have burned time. Bright side? We didn’t spend money. And if we walk in with an open mind, we still may glean an idea or two of how to style an outfit. You never know.

Something else that can get you out of a shopping rut is to try things on you normally wouldn’t. I talked about that here when I ended up with a top that I was not looking for, but have already worn twice – all because I tried it on.

Go ahead, pull a thing or two and spend some time with them in the dressing room. And don’t just throw it on and say it doesn’t work. Stand there and style it. Do a mini runway! Have fun! Take selfies!

Again, worst case you burn some time. But you’re stirring those creative juices and you may walk out with an idea for how to wear something you already own. Best case? Honestly – my best case scenario is when I walk out more in love with what I own. I cherish the times I’ve walked in and out of stores finding nothing, but instead spending the whole time thinking of what I’ve already got in my closet.

That to me is not wasted time – that to me is the best time because it’s showing me that I don’t have to wonder “what’s out there?” or whether or not I’m missing something. Nothing is out there. I’m missing zilch.

So what do I do then? I walk into my closet, say “hello boys” and start shopping my own looks. Trying on outfits and forcing myself to use and wear things I may not have previously touched.

I save money, I use what I’ve got and I’m a happier person for it – oh wait – that’s right, I’m out of my shopping rut because I don’t feel the need to shop any more.

See what I did there?
