What to Wear This Weekend

Saturday can be a tricky day to dress for.

It’s usually the most uncertain of all the days because it could include breakfast out, working out, shopping, cleaning, sports games…it’s a wide variety.

My two requirements for Saturday outfits are these: what I put on has to be comfortable enough for me to be-bop around town in. It also has to be attractive enough that I could walk into a nice restaurant/retail store or run into a friend I haven’t seen in years and not want to cover myself with a house plant.

Also, if I am going shopping I don’t want to wear something with 50 buttons or an intricate tie contraption in the back. I want to be able to try on clothes easily. Which is great because it rules out that 1800’s style gown I just can’t stop reaching for.

Last Thursday during the Indulge event at West Town Mall, Chico’s showed off some perfect Saturday outfits (see pic above). All three looks perfectly embody all the requirements of a Saturday.

My favorite is the blue top (far left). That open collar with the silver hardware on the draw strings wraps up cute and comfortable in a very chic package. You could easily wear that with yoga pants and nice tennis shoes, or black yoga pants and fancy flip flops.

I also love the open sweaters in the other two looks. The green swacket (it’s both a sweater and a jacket) is exactly what I wish was living in my closet on cooler Saturday mornings, and the coral striped sweater is just enough class to dress up a simple white tee. Both of which could easily be worn with boyfriend jeans, or colored pants like our models are showing off here.

A lot of these pieces come from their “Zenergy” line. To check out more looks from that, click here (there’s a striped jacket in there that’s SO CUTE).

These looks really showcase what it is we need to be looking for when we go out shopping for a Saturday or even ON a Saturday. Shopping for what to wear the next time I go shopping sounds like a great excuse to shop!

Side note: I just have to say what an absolute blast it was to commentate during the fashion segments we had that night. Coming up with descriptions for each outfit as they walked onto the platform stretched me in the funnest way possible! I can’t wait to do it again :)

A Statement Necklace and My Favorite Swacket

Similar necklace; swacket; skirt; shoes; undershirt came from here (believe it or not).

My favorite purchase of this fall/winter has hands down been this sweater (or jacket…maybe swacket?).

I actually took it right off the back of an unsuspecting mannequin, and I’m so glad I did (she had it coming).  I love having one cool go-to piece that I can grab and consistently feel good in throughout the colder months. It’s especially nice when I’m stuck trying to figure out what to wear – I just grab this and style it differently.

This time I changed things up by buttoning it up. It works especially well with this voluminous skirt and really helps showcase this gorgeous statement necklace my Aunt Kathleen got me for my birthday this past year.

Think about any swackets you’ve got, could you get more mileage out of them by wearing them buttoned?

Maybe now that you’ve learned the word “swacket” you’re confused as to what the proper pronunciation would be, AND need help styling it differently. Well I’ve got good news!

I’m teaming up with The Limited in West Town Mall for a style event on Saturday, February 28th. So from 12-2:30pm I’ll be in the store answering questions, offering advice and helping you look and feel your best!

Come see all the great items they have to offer and bring in a sweater or jacket that you’ve had a hard time styling – we’ll even work on how to say “swacket” while you’re there. None of the cool kids are saying it! ;)

Playing With Volume

striped sweater 3 jpg

ootd, striped sweater, how to flatter your shape, what to wear with a big sweater, tights, black skirt, wedges

striped sweater 2 jpg

I’ll tell you what helps motivate you to get out of a comfortable warm bed in the morning – a big cozy sweater that’s actually cute.

But when you’re going with something that’s got a lot of volume, you’ve got to balance it out with something that’s not so voluminous. Like a black skirt and tights!

This combination is especially perfect if you’re rounder in the middle. The volume of the sweater will drape over your mid-section and help draw all the attention to the smaller spaces on your body.

I picked up this sweater at the fantasy factory that is the Dillard’s outlet in Asheville, NC. That place is a shoppers paradise. Well, let me rephrase that – it’s a deal-hunters paradise. If you don’t like picking through rack after rack in a sea of sale clothing then it’s not for you. Party pooper.

And since I can’t provide a link to that, there are two similarly shaped sweaters…here and here.

A black skirt like this is invaluable in the winter. I picked this one up at Forever21 years and years ago. I’ve yet to find a substitute, but I’m going to need to fast as I’ve really worn this one out. One like this is great with black tights which I will never stop wearing no matter how old I get. They make your legs look so skinny!!

Think about the balance of volume with the next outfit you put together and see how great it makes you look!

How to Accessorize a Fancy Sweater

how to accessorize a metallic sweater, metallic sweater, what to wear to a christmas party

I know there’s been a lot of talk of Christmas outfits around here lately, but this is a fashion blog and it is Christmas time. You didn’t come here to get the latest tech news. ;)

I first wrote about this sweater last Friday. But I wanted to talk about how I accessorized it.

Again, the great thing about going with something shiny is that it can stand on it’s own. A silver necklace wouldn’t work because it would disappear into the sweater. I considered doing a black necklace (and may go with one in the future) but because I was wearing my hair down, it wouldn’t get proper exposure.

So I chose these snake skin-patterned earrings. They were perfect because they had a pattern and weren’t shiny. This sweater really shines in real life, and adding shiny earring on top of that would mean passing out sunglasses before I walk into the room.

Remember, it’s all about balance. And (like you’ve heard me say a lot here lately) texture! If you have any questions related to this, remember to click on my social media links there on the right :) @thespiff_e on both Twitter and Instagram!

Tulle Skirts and Sparkle Pants – An Intriguing Tale

black sequin pants, sequin pants, sparkly pants, what to wear to holiday parties, what to wear with sequin pants, white house black market pants, the loft sweater

You want to hear the tale of my Christmas program outfit? It involves intrigue and a tulle skirt – as all great adventure tales do.

So at the beginning of the year, I listed in this post that one of my goals for 2014 was to rock a tulle skirt. I was so very serious about that, and when the opportunity arose for me to be in the Christmas program at my church, I thought what better time to wear one then for the program!

What a great idea! So I hunted one down and ordered it. Exactly six days before the program I checked on its whereabouts only to find that it was still hanging out in Hong Kong. Uh….That’s a long way away.

Cue the panic.

Thankfully, I had a back up plan. So let me pause and say how important it is to have a back up plan when you’ve ordered something online. Because that really saved me here. Most of the time for special events I’m locked down to one look and one look only. But it was truly the grace of God that I had another look in mind.

It was also by the grace of God that I was able to get both of these pieces on sale. Truly, I thank God for that.

So here are the deets…the pants are from White House Black Market and the sweater is from The Loft  (it’s actually a petite size because that’s all they had left, so I went a size up and it worked which is good to know). I knew I wanted sparkle pants (I was also hoping to generate a nickname with them ;) so I went to this website – ShopStyle.

When you’re searching for something specific, this is the website to use. All you do is input a description of what you want, you can narrow down the price and add other specifics, but it generates a listing of that item and the stores in which it can be found. I do this, then look for the stores that are in West Town Mall, which is how I found the sparkle pants. It’s 1,000 times easier than running around the mall in a frazzled panic – which is exactly what I wanted to do when I first saw my skirts whereabouts.

I knew that since they were so glittery I could go with a toned down top, so I started out searching for a simple gray sweater. Then I found this one. And it was love at first sight.

When buying special occasion clothes, I’m all about how many wears I can squeeze out of them. Unfortunately, I don’t think these pants will get as much use as say a classic pair of black pants, but they’re instant fun, and who knows, I may get more use out of them then I realize.

The sweater, Lord, I’ll wear that whenever I can get the chance!

So that’s the end. I may have heightened about the level of intrigue at the beginning of this tale, but let me just say that when you see the words “Hong Kong” at 8:30am, that’s all the “intrigue” I can handle.
