Styling Family Photos

styling family photos, how to style your family for pictures, family pictures

If you think that I’m exaggerating when I say, I squeal and dance a little bit every time I see a pumpkin or hear a fall reference, you are wrong.

In fact, “squeal” and “a little bit” are under exaggerations.

In the long list of deliciousĀ autumn-relatedĀ things we get to breathe in, eat up, see, wear and do in the coming months, taking family fall pictures is one of them.

I want to help you style your fall family photo shoot my letting you in on my thought process as I put our look together.

Start with one piece.

Minimize the daunting feeling of making multiple people look good, by starting with just one thing. Sometimes it’s what I want Jackson to wear, or it’s something I want to wear.

Either way, having that one piece to build off of really helps lay the ground work for all of the looks.

For our Christmas card picture from last year, I knew I wanted Jackson to have a tie on, so I started with that onesie (that was waaaay to big for him). I pulled out the gray and echoed the maroon a bit in my lipstick. *kissy face.

Coordinate, don’t match.

This isn’t 1985. Your bow doesn’t have to be cut from the same material as your puffy sleeve dress.

In fact, you don’t even have to all be wearing the exact same colors.

For Jackson’s birthday party, I knew I wanted the boys in a variation of gray/black/white/army green, but I wanted to be in a bright color to mix it up. I looked around for something in a deep/bright orange but found this pink and it worked beautifully.

If you have trouble with colors, pay attention to websites you like or the colors of your favorite brand. Those colors are chosen by how they compliment each other, so it will get you in the habit of seeing what works.

Also, Pinterest. I say that like I’m on there. I need 45 more hours in my day for that.

Throw in patterns.

This is my biggest tip of all. Looking back on our family pictures, my favorite thing about our looks are the patterns and how good they look on camera.

Anyone else ever notice that game show contestants are always wearing solid colors? Unless you’re immediately leaving your family portrait to appear on Family Feud, leave the solids at home.

Patterns look great on camera and give your look more depth and visual interest.

Also, a photographer friend once told me that white is a no no, and all black gets lost in the shadows.

Go for patterns.

AND GO FOR FALL BECAUSE IT’S ALMOST OFFICIALLY HERE!! *runs off screaming…

The thing about writing a blog about beauty/fashion is people can sometimes see that you’re not taking your own advice and hold you to it.

All of the examples that immediately came to mind to prove my point are pretty lame. Although there was that one time I left the house wearing leggings and my top didn’t cover my butt.*

*That’s a joke. That never has nor ever will happen. I’m not an animal.

I take a big gulp of my own advice when it comes to carrying a bag I’m proud of and am confident in to translate my style to the world.

Press Pause with Me

fall, leaves, fallen leaves, sequoya hills, knoxville blogger, neighborhood,

Today I wanted to provide a moment. A moment to pause.

Next week (if not already) the holiday rush will begin. I’ve already thought several times about everything I want to get done before Thanksgiving. But right after that thought starts the panic that I’m not enjoying the last week of fall.

So I needed a moment to pause, and I figured you did too.

This is a picture I took in my favorite place to walk. I love going on walks because they force you to just slow down, enjoy the moment and think. If you don’t have time for a walk, enjoy this picture for a second.

Notice all the pretty leaves, especially that gorgeous red tree in the background. Think of the fun things you’ve done in the past month, your favorite moments, things you’re thankful for. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

One thing I’ve tried to do since giving birth (and especially in this, my favorite time of year) is take moments to just think about how much I’m enjoying everything. And it helps! I can look back on all those times I’ve paused and it feels as if time isn’t flying by me as much.

Listen, my goal with this blog isn’t just to help you put outfits together. My hope is that you always walk away with a little more swagger in your step because TheSpiff has made you feel happier, more uplifted. And yes, in my mind you finish the blog then immediately walk away from your computer.

I hope that today I’ve handed you the chance to enjoy the season! The holidays are about to begin and they’re going to be wonderful, you’ll get everything done. Just enjoy yourself.

Costume Ideas Part Two

I bet you ten dollars your first Halloween costume wasn’t the same as mine.

As kids we celebrated every Halloween at our church’s Fall Festival – which was always on Halloween night, something kind of foreign nowadays for some reason. Every little girl my age wanted to be either the Bride of Christ or Ester because those two were the prettiest costumes and could still win a prize.

I wasn’t into being a bride or Ester. I was a little bit of a tomboy, so my costume was different than all the other kids. And I can guarantee you no one showed up holier than I was (unless they came as Jesus), because I was the Holy Bible.

That’s right. I dressed up as the Living Word of God. I got a box, painted it black in the front and back and gold down the sides then added “Holy Bible” to the front. I wore a black turtle neck sweater and gold stockings.

Somehow that costume didn’t win first place. I don’t know how because none of those characters could have shown up to that party if it weren’t for God’s Word. Not that I’m bitter or anything…

Well my costume ideas have taken quite the wild turn from those days. Last week it was time for my 3rd annual costume segment where I go around West Town Mall putting costumes together with clothes you can more likely wear Monday morning, which means you get all your money’s worth out of them.

Here’s what I’ve come up with for Halloween 2015 (remember all of these can be found at West Town Mall)…

Want to be an emoji?! Grab a pink sweater from JCPenney and throw your hand in the air. Done.

If you’re not one who likes to smile, then take full advantage of that with this costume. Get a gorgeous outfit from Ann Taylor (or at the very least get a coat…it’s a great excuse for that!), add some heavy sunglasses and you are Victoria Beckham!

Now if you’re not one for buying clothes for your costume, but you do need new makeup, I suggest stopping by to see the girls at Bare Minerals! Have the girls give your makeup a freshening up, pick up some award winning products and slap an award on your face because you are part of the Allure Best Of Beauty Products!

Claire’s has some cute easy options if you’re just looking to don some head gear…just stay away from the Boho thing if you’ve got hair like mine. It’s not something I can pull off, obvi ;)

And for the cutest option of all…if you’ve got a cutie little kid you’re looking to incorporate into your look, why not dress him and yourself up like the cast of Jersey Shore! I stopped by Charlotte Russe for this great leopard dress. The large earrings and the poof are alllll miiine ;)
