Lilac

Purple is the perfect color. It just is.

If you want to debate me on that, I’ll just throw down the fact that it’s the color of royalty. Boom. Where do you go from there? Nowhere because I won that round.

Pastels have edged out the bright neon colors this spring, and while pastels aren’t my favorite shades I will take pretty much any shade of purple on any given day. That’s why I’ve been loving this shade of lilac.

In fact, this weeks nail color inspired me to purchase some earrings in the same shade. These are from BlueTique, that great little clothing shop in Market Square. And the nail polish is OPI’s “Don’t You Lilac It?”

The juxtaposition of the soft shade with an edgy black makes me fall in love with both colors all over again. So soft, so playful, so perfect. I really do love purple.

Don’t you lilac it, too?

The Last One of These You’ll Ever Buy

If you’re still struggling with drugstore nail files, quit. I’m serious. Burn them.

They’re a waste of time and money, and only breed frustration when you pick one up thinking it has enough “fresh space” left, but it doesn’t.

You know what file always has fresh space no matter how long you’ve used it? A crystal nail file.

I’d like to pause here a moment and pay homage to my little nail file. I think I’ve accidentally thrown it away. It lasted me a good long time. I used it on my nails every week for 3 years. That’s over 150 times it was there for me, fresh as a daisy.

I hope I find it, but since I couldn’t wait till I did (the weekly manicure must live on) I sprung for a new one. A bigger one, that hopefully won’t get swept away when I pick up my mess.

Believe it or not, this size only costs about $2 more than the smaller size (and there’s one even larger than this). This medium size rings in at $10. That might initially sound like a lot of money to you, but baring any accidental visit to the trash can, this file could potentially be the last file you ever buy.

All you have to do to “refresh” it is rinse it off. That’s it. Like I said, my little guy lasted 3 years (almost to the day), and I use it faithfully every week. So think about that next time you pick up your flimsy little drugstore nail file.

Oh, and you can get these at Morri’s Luggage and Gifts in West Town Mall right outside of JCPenney.

Go get one for yourself!

Change Your Polish in Seconds

In an effort to lighten my load this week, I want to bring you a blog I wrote a year ago about a nail polish I’m ironically wearing again…on almost the same week. You want to know what else is weird? We’re planning on going and buying flowers this week at Lowe’s.

Read on to see why that’s so weird.

Does anyone else take an abnormal amount of time choosing a nail color?

Every week, I stand in front of my collection, agonizing over the decision as if I were wearing the color to the Oscars. Why is this?!

Left hand’s been out of the sun, the right hand’s been in it.

My husband would probably tell you that I have too many options (and don’t tell him I said this, but that is probably a large part of the problem).

I think it’s mostly me. The fact that we spent over an hour in the flower section at Lowe’s the other night trying to get the right color combinations for our porch, proves I’m the common denominator.

Before you go judging me, I will say that my decisions are very calculated and 9 times out of 10 I’m extremely pleased with the results without question. It’s just being patient through the long thought process to get to that decision that people have to deal with.

Thankfully, there are geniuses out there like the creators behind Ruby Wing nail polish give you the ability to combine two colors into one. Cutting decision time…well, out! No more bright or dark conundrums, you can have the best of both worlds on your nails-anytime you want!

Ruby Wing

Want to know how you can have two different colors on your nails without using nail polish remover?

Sunlight! Ruby Wing has created a nail polish that changes from a bright to a dark, by simply holding your hand out to the sun!

Think of how fun this would be on your toes as your sunbathing, or what a cool party trick it would be at a cookout to start with one polish and half way through trick someone into thinking you’ve completely changed your nails!

That’s what I can’t wait for. Some hyper nail color aware person (much like myself) comes along, sees your nails before you hit the outdoors and registers that it’s one color, then five minutes later sees you outside and is freaked out because your nails are a whole other shade!
That. will. be. awesome.

It’s the Barbie color changing hair in water-thing all over again, but more socially acceptable for adults :)

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before this nail polish technology hits it big, but until then be the first to wow (and remember you heard it here first!!) with Ruby Wing!

A Simple Nail Trick to Save Your Manicure

I’m going to continue on the campaign trail this week, and keep on pushing the idea that you should be painting your nails.

Maybelline Color Show in Pink Embrace

I know it can be a frustrating process when you spend so much time on it, then two days later they start to chip. But I’ve got a solution for that.

Over the weekend I went with a new polish from Maybelline’s Color Show line. It’s a petal pink color, and I thought it would look even better if I made it “matte”. So I painted my Essie mattifier over it.

The whole thing looked great…for about a day. Then because the pink is so light, it started to look dirty and really gross.

This, as you all can attest, did not make me a happy camper. No one likes to see all that hard work of filing your nails/painting/dry time go down the drain so easily.

Reluctantly I went to the bathroom and started to remove my polish, and it was then the idea struck.

I didn’t have to work on taking the whole thing off my nails. All I needed to do was remove the top layer. It was the top layer with the mattifier on it that needed to be erased. And by only leaving the acetone on there for a couple seconds, it was as if I rewound to when I had painted the first layer of color on my nails.

Which meant all I had to do was paint one layer on top and be on my way!

I was struck by the brilliance of the idea – why hadn’t I thought of this before?! It saves you time, and it saves you product. Because I didn’t have to go back and paint base coat and more color – just the one layer of color and wha-la! My nails look great again and they’ve lasted all week.

Think about that next time you’ve got a chip, or botched nails. Don’t start all the way over – just take the first layer off!

If you’re a super early riser, be sure to watch me on WVLT (channel 8) tomorrow morning between 6:15 and 6:30. I’ll be giving more Easter outfit options!

Nail Polish Clean Out

For as long as I hold the resolve, I’m going to use Fridays as a day to help you clean something out.

It is spring time, after all, so it’s a great time to get rid of what you don’t use.

Last Friday I took you through how I cleaned out my underwear drawer. So glam, I know. This Friday, it’s time to clean out your nail polishes.

And even if you don’t have strong feelings (aka: an obsession) for buying a few nail polishes (aka: over $300 worth) that I do, you still have a stash and my bet is you haven’t looked at them all together in a while.

Let’s hunker down together and whip our collection into shape!

That’s not even all of them…

First: Gather them all up.
If this means cleaning off your custom made shelf (my husband is so handy), or digging through random drawers and crannies throughout your house, doesn’t matter. Just be sure you’ve gathered every single polish you own. That way you can see what all you’ve got.

Second: Peel off the colors you’ll never wear.
Right off, you can see which ones are “so last year” or just so old you’ll never use them. Quickly whittle down what you know you wouldn’t use next week.

Third: Out with the old.
Old nail polish is THE WORST to paint with. It’s terrible for painting on, and takes forever to dry (even when you think it’s dry…it’s not). The test I use for immediately knowing if a polish is going to be worth keeping or not? Shake it. If you can still hear the ball easily moving around, then it hasn’t thickened up. If I don’t hear the ball, or if it’s only audible every once in a while? Toss it.

Fourth: Organize by color.
Unlike your closet, it would do you some good to organize your colors by shade. That way you can immediately see what color you tend to buy, and if you have multiples (a lot of OPI shades, I’ve noticed, are barely just barely different from one another).

Fifth: Buy something new.
The fact that I own this many polishes, but still think of buying new ones is a true testimony to the fact that I have a problem (<— see there, I admitted it. Ok, so I’m not doing so bad ;)
However, now that we know the great polishes we’ve enjoyed from Crabtree & Evelyn won’t be so accessible anymore, it would be a good time to stock up on their cute colors for spring/summer.

Take yourself shopping for a new color as a reward for being so good and cleaning them out! I know my husband was just thinking that I needed some more ;)

Have a wonderful weekend!
