Summer Beauty Swaps

This a post from last summer (as you’ll quickly surmise when you see my stomach ;) But I wanted to bring it to you again because all of these products are still relevant, and will help make your summer beauty routine a lot easier. Enjoy!

Now that it is consistently hotter than a cole miners arm pit outside, it’s a good time to summer-ize our beauty routine.

This time of year we need protection from the sun, tools to combat humidity, and products that will help us not feel like we want to melt into the concrete.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch yesterday’s segment, just press play!

Here is a list of all the products I talked about…

Aveeno body lotion with SPF: If you’re not already applying lotion everyday/every time you get out of the shower, you should be! Add this to your routine and you’ll not only get moisturized, but you’ll also get protection from the sun!

Pond’s BB Cream: One thing I forgot to mention on the show, is this only comes in two shades. I picked up the medium to go with my tan, and it seems to blend in well. It does come out a lot darker then what it ends up looking like on your face, so don’t get freaked out.

Maybelline Color Show in Pink Embrace: light pastel colors are great for your manicure if you don’t want to touch it up a lot. These lighter colors won’t show nicks and chips as badly.

Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray: I don’t know why my face starts to feel gross by 3pm, but I do know how to fix it – this makeup setting spray does the trick every time. Spray it on your face after doing your makeup to keep it in place, then do what I do and use it as an afternoon refresher.

Sea Salt Spray by Organix: Get that soft beach-babe look in your hair without all the driving and that sand thing, with this great sea salt spray. It smells fantastic and will give your hair some texture to make it easier to put up.

Mani Monday

black nails

 black nails

You can say things like “gray is the new black” or, “orange is the new black”, but the fact remains, black still dominates. When you’re the color all other colors are trying to replace – you are boss. Think about it, does, “gray is the new yellow” work? No. It doesn’t.

I thought black nails would be a fitting mani color for the first week of fall. But I didn’t want to stop there. I wanted to liven it up with a mattifier and give it that cool flat black edge – not that black needs more edge, but you get my drift.

The mattifier I use is Essie’s Matte About You. OPI makes a version as well. The trick is to wait until your mani is completely dry because sometimes the mattifier can make it malleable. Ha. Then you end up with a malleable matte mani Monday.

….aaaand I’m out of “M” words to add to that.

Try this with one of your favorite nail colors. It gives it a whole new look and really adds dimension…or I guess in this case, takes it away!

The Last One of These You’ll Ever Buy

If you’re still struggling with drugstore nail files, quit. I’m serious. Burn them.

They’re a waste of time and money, and only breed frustration when you pick one up thinking it has enough “fresh space” left, but it doesn’t.

You know what file always has fresh space no matter how long you’ve used it? A crystal nail file.

I’d like to pause here a moment and pay homage to my little nail file. I think I’ve accidentally thrown it away. It lasted me a good long time. I used it on my nails every week for 3 years. That’s over 150 times it was there for me, fresh as a daisy.

I hope I find it, but since I couldn’t wait till I did (the weekly manicure must live on) I sprung for a new one. A bigger one, that hopefully won’t get swept away when I pick up my mess.

Believe it or not, this size only costs about $2 more than the smaller size (and there’s one even larger than this). This medium size rings in at $10. That might initially sound like a lot of money to you, but baring any accidental visit to the trash can, this file could potentially be the last file you ever buy.

All you have to do to “refresh” it is rinse it off. That’s it. Like I said, my little guy lasted 3 years (almost to the day), and I use it faithfully every week. So think about that next time you pick up your flimsy little drugstore nail file.

Oh, and you can get these at Morri’s Luggage and Gifts in West Town Mall right outside of JCPenney.

Go get one for yourself!

Change Your Polish in Seconds

In an effort to lighten my load this week, I want to bring you a blog I wrote a year ago about a nail polish I’m ironically wearing again…on almost the same week. You want to know what else is weird? We’re planning on going and buying flowers this week at Lowe’s.

Read on to see why that’s so weird.

Does anyone else take an abnormal amount of time choosing a nail color?

Every week, I stand in front of my collection, agonizing over the decision as if I were wearing the color to the Oscars. Why is this?!

color changing nail polish
Left hand’s been out of the sun, the right hand’s been in it.

My husband would probably tell you that I have too many options (and don’t tell him I said this, but that is probably a large part of the problem).

I think it’s mostly me. The fact that we spent over an hour in the flower section at Lowe’s the other night trying to get the right color combinations for our porch, proves I’m the common denominator.

Before you go judging me, I will say that my decisions are very calculated and 9 times out of 10 I’m extremely pleased with the results without question. It’s just being patient through the long thought process to get to that decision that people have to deal with.

Thankfully, there are geniuses out there like the creators behind Ruby Wing nail polish give you the ability to combine two colors into one. Cutting decision time…well, out! No more bright or dark conundrums, you can have the best of both worlds on your nails-anytime you want!

Ruby Wing

Want to know how you can have two different colors on your nails without using nail polish remover?

Sunlight! Ruby Wing has created a nail polish that changes from a bright to a dark, by simply holding your hand out to the sun!

Think of how fun this would be on your toes as your sunbathing, or what a cool party trick it would be at a cookout to start with one polish and half way through trick someone into thinking you’ve completely changed your nails!

That’s what I can’t wait for. Some hyper nail color aware person (much like myself) comes along, sees your nails before you hit the outdoors and registers that it’s one color, then five minutes later sees you outside and is freaked out because your nails are a whole other shade!
That. will. be. awesome.

It’s the Barbie color changing hair in water-thing all over again, but more socially acceptable for adults :)

I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before this nail polish technology hits it big, but until then be the first to wow (and remember you heard it here first!!) with Ruby Wing!
