2014 Costume Fun

For my costume this year, I wanted it to be as easy as last year but just as fun.

So in honor of Gilmore Girls coming to Netflix, I decided to dress up as Loralie Gilmore!

All I had to do for this was curl my hair, buy a “Luke’s Diner” shirt, throw on jeans and a blazer, hold some coffee and wha-la! I’m caffeine ingesting, quick talking, sassy Loralie Gilmore!

Watch the video for more cute costume ideas and have a great weekend!

Well Hello, TJ Maxx.com

business bag from tjmaxx.com

business bag from tjmaxx.com

May I interrupt the conversation you’re probably having about how great TJMaxx is, with some news about how great TJMaxx is? Thanks.

I don’t know if you know this, and I’m certain your bank account is going to grimace at the news…or will that be your husband? Either way, if you haven’t yet seen it, TJ Maxx has a pretty awesome website. There you can find just as good of a deal as you would in store, only when you shop online, there’s no one to elbow in the ribs when they reach for your bag.

I’m on the hunt for a new laptop bag for my work computer, and sauntered over to their site one day just to see what they had to offer. I was so pleased to find their online options have quadrupled since I was last on, and their prices are still just as reasonable.

Now let’s talk about their bags.

They list the dimensions for each bag, which greatly helps when you’re searching for something to house a 15″ laptop. It made it so much easier to find this bag (which was not in the store, by the way, so what they carry online can be completely different).

I really wanted a laptop bag that didn’t scream “laptop bag” (which meant it couldn’t be black). This one is great in that it has plenty of room, a easy slouchy look to it and is a gorgeous color. I did have to pay for shipping, which was around $7, so it brought the total from $34 to a little over $40. Not too bad, especially considering all the other bags I looked at were pretty pricy. Speaking of which, does anyone else find themselves loving the most expensive options available? I do that all the time, I’ll be browsing through a store or a website, say “Oo! I like that!” and nine times out of ten it’s over $1,000.

That’s a habit I desperately need to break. Thankfully I’ve got the TJ Maxx website to help!

Ps: I did end up taking the bag back (my laptop was a little too snug inside), but the good news about that is you can return it to any store in town.

How to Receive a Compliment Part II

how to receive a compliment

how to receive a compliment

The trouble with compliments, is sometimes we don’t know how to respond.

I talked about this on my morning show segment several weeks ago, but I didn’t get to everything I wanted to say. So here’s more…

When you respond to a compliment with a self-deprecating remark, it does two things. First, it highlights your insecurities.

By immediately pointing out what you don’t like about your outfit (or how you feel in it), it draws attention away from the beautiful thing you were complimented on and instead flips on a negative light. I know that sounds complex, but that’s exactly what happens.

It also puts the compliment giver on defense. Which means they have to defend to you why it is they like something you’re wearing – does that make sense? No! Does that make them want to give you more compliments in the future? They may think twice about it.

I understand that if we’re not feeling our best, it can be hard to confidently say, “Thank you.” But it’s really the best reaction. If you’re really not feeling your best, you can say something like, “I really appreciate that, I’m not feeling this outfit today but it’s what I went with. I’m so glad you said something!”

That way you don’t have to “fake” confidence, and at the same time you let them know how good their compliment made you feel. Which in turn makes them feel good, and won’t ruin your chances of getting a compliment again in the future.

There will be more blogs on this subject, I can guarantee you that. For now, be mindful of how you respond and be positive with what you’re wearing! You look beautiful today, own it and say thank you!

4 Summer Hair Dont’s

With everything that happened over the weekend and the week leading up to it, I thought I’d go easy on myself and re-share these four hair don’ts from last year.

They are good to be reminded of now that we’re in full view of summer, so take a minute to read them over…

1. Don’t put off scheduling an appointment.
Schedule your next appointment before you finish your last one, that way it’s on the calendar and you don’t have to think about it again till they give you the reminder call. No one ever thinks of getting a hair cut until it’s an emergency. Schedule ahead of time.

2. Don’t settle for an average hair dresser.
Get yourself down to Barnes and Barnes on Market Square and schedule an appointment. Done. Check. They’re awesome from start to finish.

3. Don’t forget how you wear your hair all summer.
If you let it air dry and go wavy all summer-think about layers. They’re going to make wavy styles more full and easier to accomplish. If you wear your hair up a lot all summer, layers might hinder this because short pieces won’t stay up. Think about these things as you go in for your next appointment. Knowing what you need ahead of time will save a lot of frustration in the end.

4. Don’t be scared.
I watched as my hair dresser cut huge chunks of hair from my head this last time, but you know, I wasn’t the least bit scared. I knew that he knew what he was doing, and so I just sat back and thought of all the ways I knew I was going to like the hair cut. And you know what? I don’t like it. I LOVE IT.

Easy breezy beautiful summer hair isn’t an impossibility. Sit down and talk to your hair dresser (after you schedule an appointment) and see what will work best for you. It will keep you in a happy mood all summer long!
