Tips on How to Plan All Your Christmas Outfits

Tis the season to be gorgeous, fa la la la la la la la la.

This past Saturday, I carved out some time to try on clothes. While there were several moments when I wondered if I was truly being productive, the fact that I’m now into December and not having to give a second thought to what I’m going to wear to the three big events I have this week says a resounding YES. Yes I WAS being productive.

Your calendar may not be jammed packed with fancy parties, but it may have a friendly get together or two, and to avoid any and all stress it’s really good to pre-plan what you’re going to wear.

I have a small rotation of sequined items that I go through this time of year, but my goal every year is to wear them in a fresh way. Which is also why taking time to play around with what’s in your closet is a good thing – it gives you time to be creative.

Another bonus? It will save you money. I’m trying my darndest not to spend a lot of money on clothes (especially with a baby bump) and the more I can creatively use what’s in my closet the better.

Pull out and play with what you’ve got! And when you get stuck, hop on Pinterest and search for the piece you’re struggling with. Say it’s a sequin pencil skirt you don’t know how to look fresh – then search “Sequin pencil skirt outfit” and look at the results! Keep in mind, you don’t have to directly copy anything you see if you don’t want. But take a look instead at the silhouette that’s going on in the picture. Is the skirt mostly paired with tight tops or big voluminous sweaters? If it is a big sweater, what do you have in your closet that mimics the shape?

This is my thought process as I go through and test each outfit idea. It’s so fun to see and use what you’ve already got. And if you find that you are missing something, no worries! Now you know exactly what you need, or at least have a clearer picture of what holes you need to fill for a fabulous holiday season of outfits!

Oh and if you need any ideas on where to spend your clothing cash, here are some fabulous outfit ideas from White House Black Market and Banana Republic in West Town Mall. Also, be sure to listen as I go through each piece and give alternate styling ideas…

I could get dressed for a Christmas party every day of the week.

Plotting out my Christmas season outfits is high on the list of my favorite things to do this time of year. Mainly because I could dress like I’m going to a Christmas party every day. Sparkle, velvet and sequins aren’t just right up my alley, they’re what my alley is made of.

So let’s dive in with some styling tips…

1. Choose one area to highlight with sequins.

The nice thing about buying something that’s sparkly is you can let it be the star of the show! Whether it’s a blazer, pants, a dress or a top, let that one piece be the focus and leave everything else simple.

The only exception to this rule is if the piece isn’t fully made of sequins or sparkles. Especially if it’s, for example, a top with sequin sleeves, you can bring in more sparkle troops if that’s the case because it’s not an over abundance.

2. Balance out the fancy with the not so fancy.

One of the funnest things about this time of year is taking a piece and changing it from fancy to not so fancy with a few tweaks here and there.

For example, if you’ve got a very fancy blazer, wear it with some jeans and a funny Christmas graphic tee! Or take a cocktail dress and tone it down with a blazer and some booties. So many possibilities!

3. When it comes to jewelry, less is more.

If you’ve already got a lot going on with your outfit, do yourself a favor and leave the house without a lot of jewels. It’s just more comfortable that way.

The exception to this rule would be you’re wearing all black velvet jumpsuit or really anything velvety because I can’t help but add some major bling to that smooth mammer jammer. But even still, if you’re going with sparkly earrings, don’t do a necklace and visa versa.

It’s rare that I say don’t do a bracelet unless your arm often catches on fire. Otherwise go for it.

If you’ll notice in the above picture, it’s the only piece of jewelry I’m sporting because the dress is so sparkly!!

Outfits You Haven’t Thought about for Your Holiday Events

banana republic, ten news this morning, christmas party outfit ideas, party outfit ideas, what to wear to a christmas party

Let’s really rock it around the Christmas tree.

I honestly get giddy when I get to go in a store and pull looks together. You may not feel the same way at all, and if that’s the case, then this is the beginning (or continuation) of a beautiful friendship.

Banana Republic is such a fun place to let loose in because they have such a cohesive style that’s fun to mix and match. My hope in doing this segment was to inspire you with new pieces, help you reinvent your old ones and ultimately help you pull an outfit together that’s a little unexpected but a whole lotta fun.

Check this out, then go see them in West Town Mall!

Help with Your December Outfits

This December I’m playing a game. It’s tentatively called, “Stop Spending Money on Yourself” but it’s a working title. And the rules, as it turns out, are very fluid…especially when I walk into the mall.

I have challenged myself to spend as little as possible on clothing for the season and so far I am winning. So I want to share with you my tips and tricks for how to make what’s in your closet go far. If we can do it this time of year when there seems to be a party at every turn, WE CAN DO ANYTHING.

First, let’s start by creating a, “Christmas capsule wardrobe.” This will involve every piece in your closet that’s red, green, sparkly, shimmery, velvety or all of the above (#jk, if it’s “all of the above” we’ve got bigger issues to work on). Anything that you pull from for a fancy night out – even if it’s in the summer.

Now look at each piece individually and think of how you wore it last and then…forget about that. We want to mix it up!

What top can you tuck into a pencil skirt? What shimmery tank can be worn under an open chunky sweater with jeans (notice I didn’t say blazer because we’re doing things differently!)? Or which jacket in your closet can be thrown over that sequin dress? Start thinking outside the box!

This combo I have on in the picture is something I’ve never worn together, but I’ve owned both pieces for years. How did I get around to it? I have a list of pieces in my closet that I pull out this time of year and I do exactly what I’m telling you to do – I look at them differently and play with them all until I produce a fresh look.

If you get stuck? Enter the item into Pinterest then follow it with “outfit.” So maybe your sequin sweater has you stuck. Type in, “Sequin Sweater Outfit.” You may not mimic anything exactly as you see it, but you may be struck with inspiration from the silhouette of an outfit (mostly likely from a girl whose thighs don’t touch).

What I didn’t say in the opening up there, is this is a game I play every year. I reserve sequin wearing for pretty much December only and I reserve sequin buying for any month other than December (because that’s when you get it on sale). So I’ve got plenty of outfit inspiration to go around. Look here, and here, oh and here. Also…here for how to remix a little black sequin dress.

PS: I bought this shirt at Walmart. Yep. Thank you Miley Cyrus clothing line from 2012! (Here’s a similar one) And the skirt came from The Limited, which is open online again?! Here’s a similar skirt.

how to dress down a sequin dress, sequin dress, christmas party outfit, christmas outfit idea, style consultant, how to wear a dress multiple ideas, ootd

I have a resolution and I haven’t even eaten a single Christmas cookie. Although I can’t say I’ve laid off the egg nog – YUMMO!

My resolution at the start of December was to not buy a single new sequin. Not one little round disk sewed in multiples to any garment. I have so much I’ve accumulated through the years and really this is the only time of year I break any of it out.

Which means no one would remember any of it. And if I freshen it all up by wearing it differently, it’s like I have a whole new holiday closet.

Except for the fact that I’m writing it about it right now for all of you to read. Don’t tell anyone else, other than the five people you’ve shared this link with things like, “You have to check out this blog”, “the funniest thing I’ve read all year,” cozied up around it.

I bought this dress from Forever21 six years ago for the first corporate Christmas party I planned. It was perfect because it’s sleeveless, but has a great underlayer that makes it super comfortable to wear without revealing a lot. That underlayer is edged in lace scallops, if you look closely you can see it (sorry for the lack of close ups – how about this scenery, though, right!?)

Let’s talk about how you can translate this look in your own closet. The goal is to take a sequin dress down just a few notches so it doesn’t look like you’re headed to a evening party. A long cozy sweater like this or a dark jean jacket would also have the same effect.

I love mixing high and low pieces like this, to create a totally balanced look. Keep the jewelry quiet (I just added a necklace that was super fun and textured from The Limited).

What can you re-purpose in your own closet! It’s fun to shop what you have, especially pieces you haven’t pulled out since last December. Try it! It will save some cash too, which is always nice.

I hope this inspires you this Christmas. Here’s another totally flattering look for any parties you may have jammin’ this weekend.

Merry Christmas, Everybody!
