Get the Most From Your Maxi Dress

maxi dress

The one piece I end up missing the most when summer is over, is a maxi dress.

Thus while I’ve got summer on my side, I’m going to figure out as many ways to wear them as possible. This not only helps me when packing, but it also helps to stretch my dollars -and you can’t say that’s not fun!

Here are three examples of how I’ve taken a plain maxi dress and jazzed them up a bit…

There are so many great simple tank maxi’s out there, don’t shy away from them! Look at them as a blank (and wildly comfortable) canvas. Add your personality all over it by way of a belt, a long swingy necklace, a jean jacket…the list goes on and on.

I hate having to work around my bra straps this time of year. That’s why I stock up on printed tank tops that aren’t razor backs so that I can wear them underneath a strappy dress like this one and still be comfortable in my regular bra. If you have a dress that doesn’t work with a tank top underneath, click here to read about a great strapless bra.

This striped dress has been with me all over the country. Because it’s so easy to pack and can be worn 10 different ways. Look for a maxi in a simple pattern like this one so you can wear it with a sweater, a shirt, a jacket, a sweatshirt…you get the idea. It’s freakishly versatile.

Ross has one of the best collections of maxi dresses I’ve ever seen. That’s where I bought the flower print one pictured. The other two came from Forever21 (JC Penney also has a great collection). Get out there and find one you love, then wear it ten different ways from Sunday!

I Hope You Didn’t Get Your Dad These Pants

DSC_0596

track pants

The technical name for them is “track pants,” but I like to call them, “the most comfortable thing I’ll slip my legs into all summer.”

With a fun pattern and a silky texture, these pants are exactly what you’ve been looking to add to your summer-wear.

Most of the time they have an elastic waist, making them the perfect “eatin’ pants” for meals where you plan to throw down a lot (I don’t know about you, but I really needed a pair of eating pants that look as sophisticated as these do).

The only downfall to these pants is that they can be tricky to style. With the wrong kind of styling it can look like you forgot to put your real pants on when you woke up this morning (am I dancing here, or am I yawning?)

Heels help these pants look less slouchy and more out-in-public appropriate. And while most of the time in styling, it’s best to pair opposites together (i.e.: slouchy pants, structured top) these pants can handle a little less balance. So a slouchy top like this blue blouse from Forever21 (back in the day) works with the pants because it’s made out of dressier fabric.

If I were to wear these with a white t-shirt, I would probably tuck the front of it into the waist so that my outfit wouldn’t translate, “slouch bucket.”

A long dangly necklace is fun because it adds to the boho feel. I nabbed these at JCP, by the way, so if you want to go get your own try them with these styling tips and you’ll be looking so fly (and feeling so comfortable).

Leopard, Jeans & Gladiators

Even though it’s starting to really feel like summer outside, I’m still reaching for my favorite skinny jeans.

Let’s face it, it could be raining balls of fire and I’m still going to reach for these perfectly worn-in jeans from Express because I know my butt will look good as I run ;)

As I put this outfit together the other night, I was excited to find that I could incorporate my gladiator wedges with my jeans if I simply roll the cuff up another half inch. I like to give these shoes their due spotlight, and if my jeans are grazing the top of the shoe I don’t feel as if that’s showcasing them well enough.

The key to pulling off the rolled jean look like this, is to not pair it with a crop top or sweater. You don’t want to look like you recently went through a growth spurt (nor do you want to look like you shrunk your outfit in the wash).

This leopard print top from JCP with the black edging is my favorite kind of piece to have in the summer. Because it’s got that all-over print it’s busy enough to stand alone, and with the black piping around the collar it’s not really conducive to a necklace. All I need to do is throw on a black bracelet and I’m good to go.

Easy breezy.

Now I just need to order up 152 more of these tops and I’ll be set for the rest of the summer!

This Coat is More Necessary Than You Think

Does anyone else feel like Agent 99 when they put on a trench coat?

trench coat

I certainly do, and I love it. I don’t know why, but this coat reads spy gear to me and if you know me, anything that makes me feel like a spy is aces in my book.

Besides that feeling of undercover cool that washes over you, this coat is perfect for spring when it’s still cool in the morning but you’re totally over your winter coat that you need to take to the cleaners and have them fix that one button…or something like that.

trench coat

This coat is definitely the anecdote for all you winter haters.

It’s light in both color and weight and is truly a classic piece that will stand the test of time.
Don’t discount it’s usefulness, and get a good one. Ann Taylor has a gorgeous option here, as does JCPenney!

Speaking of Ann Taylor, tune into FOX43 tomorrow morning as I showcase their latest spring fashions!

Why This Works

The inspiration for this outfit was the pink sweater, but when I bought it I did something I’ve probably only done three times in my life.

I bought it without trying it on.
I’m such a stickler for trying things on before buying them because you never know how something is going to fit. If we lived in a perfect world, all women’s sizes would be the same across the board, but unfortunately Eve screwed that up for us all ;)
The reason I threw caution to the wind for this one, is because (one) I was in a hurry, (two) with a piece like this at a cost like this, I knew if the fit wasn’t right for it to wear alone I could still work it in over shirt/under jackets.
Or in this case…both.

It did turn out to be shorter than I like, but that’s ok. That means it’s the perfect set up for letting another shirt, like this striped button up, peak out.

In the spring I will probably wear the two alone, but I thought adding a blazer and jeans gives it that cool chic look. Speaking of cool, I love adding a swingy necklace to the whole ensemble.

It’s better than earrings because earrings would just be to much fuss with the blazer and shirt collar already taking up room around my neck. But a swingy necklace fills in the blank space, and gives it a more girly vibe. Plus it’s a little unexpected and a bit more rock and roll, which is the perfect balance since the whole thing is a little preppy.

Finallly, I was orginially thinking going with black pumps, but let me just say if you ever find patterned pumps that you like and have mulitple colors in them. Buy them. Buy them up.
I went with my multi-colored cheeta pumps because they go with ev.er.y.thing. and add a hint of playfullness. I promise you, if you’re wanting to break out of your pattern box or be a little more wild this year, this is the way to do it. These have become my new black pumps.
That’s another addition of Why This Works! Have a happy Monday!
