The Guide to Building a Cheap and Chic Maternity Wardrobe

So I can’t promise that you’re going to daintily sneeze and pop out the baby, nor can I promise that you’ll have the perfect retort every time someone remarks on your body and how you’re carrying.

Sure, it would be great if there was a preciseness to it and we could know exactly every change before hand, but we can’t. What we do know is that our belly is going to grow and that we’re going to love that child.

Just know your belly’s not going to be that big forever.

I’ve not made it a secret that I was thrilled to have a baby belly and loved every minute of walking around with it even on the days when it felt like it weight 45 pounds all by itself.

Since there’s so much physical change going on and you’ve got that interesting cocktail of hormones swirling around, you want to be as prepared as possible with the outfits you’re going to be wearing while that belly grows and grows.

So I CAN promise that these tips will help you smoothly transition into and out of your maternity wardrobe…

(Going into this pregnancy, by the way, I also gave away the biggest amount of clothes I’ve ever given in my life. I did that to sew a seed so that I would never be frustrated dressing my baby bump. I’m here to say, it worked!)

GAP Shirts and Statement Necklaces

I am freshly into my 3rd trimester in this picture and wearing one of only 4 shirts that I bought that were actual “maternity” shirts.

I picked up this white shirt, a gray one and a coral one from GAP in order to have basic tees that I could dress up or down. In this pic I’m wearing a simple long striped tank underneath to jazz up the basic white. You can read about that ensemble here.

I paid less than $10 for all three and squeezed every last penny out of them. I wore them with all kinds of necklaces, different pants, under jackets, under sweaters, with skirts…you name it. These went so very far. And because I picked up two of them in neutral colors (gray and white) and a third one in a nice summer color (coral) the options were endless.

Jackets, statement necklaces and sweaters are all things you can keep buying at your original size and rock all throughout the pregnancy and beyond. Since I was biggest in the summer I stocked up mostly on statement necklaces, but when I was believing God for this baby, I stepped up my blazer game and was able to disguise the bump a little with them in the spring when it was still cool outside.

 Elastic Waist Lines

The only maternity pants I bought were my jeans because being a freak about jeans an avid jean wearer, I knew that I would need at least two pairs to get me through and that’s just what I bought.

However, for business and church I knew I would need more than that, so I stocked up on pants with elastic waist bands. Pictured above are my elastic waist band patterned pants. These came in handy because they added visual interest to my outfit and allowed me more use out of those GAP maternity tops.

Pictured below is a great pair of black pants I got at GAP (from the non-maternity section). They’ve been great for business or dressier events. And because they’re so voluminous I can pair them with a tight fitting maternity top and it all works together. This striped top is the fourth of four tops I bought that are maternity. I picked this up at Motherhood on sale for $20.

Dresses – Stretch, Midi, Maxi

So I realize not everyone will have the weather to wear a maxi dress when the bump is at its biggest, but while you can, buy them and wear them because they’re something that will work later on so you don’t have to buy them from the maternity section. I got several from Ross (like this one pictured) that were $12. And really you can throw a regular jacket over them and wear them a little into fall if you’d like.

If you are going to buy a maternity dress, get one that you can do a lot with. Pictured below is the only maternity dress I bought (this one’s from Target) and I have worn the HECK out of it. Plus when I’m pregnant again, this pattern is a classic so I won’t mind pulling it back out.

Midi length is so popular right now and is a great option for preggo’s because the bump makes the dress shorter, and with a dress at a midi length that’s not a problem.

When I found one I liked I bought others in the same shape but in a different pattern and wore them all different ways. I got these at H&M and have worn them every which way – most of which included a belt so I carved out that waistline and looked less like a big prego blob.

Kimonos and Long Tees

It’s great that kimono’s are on trend right now because they’re going to help you jazz up a simple outfit. They helped me get miles more out of simple dresses and tops and also helped to streamline my shape which made me look less big and pregnant (I’ve got one on from Target with the striped dress above and a leopard one from TJMaxx in the picture directly above this).

However, they are seasonally appropriate for summer and that’s about it. So if your bump is growing well into the fall, add lots of open waterfall sweaters to your wardrobe as these will produce the same affect and allow you to spend more on something you’ll get use out of later on when you’re not pregnant.

Long t-shirts in bigger sizes helped me out greatly when it came to dressing down. In fact, honestly if I was going to panic about anything it would have been about what I was going to wear casually, but I found several great shirts from TJMaxx, Ross and Forever21 for less than $20 that weren’t maternity and fit over my bump. Then for just around the house or running errands, I went to AC Moore and picked up several $4 plain Gildan tees to wear with workout pants and sweats.

What to Wear This Weekend

weekend wear full on

weekend wear half view

Weekend wear shouldn’t be complicated. But somehow on a Saturday morning/afternoon/night when I’m standing in my closet trying to figure out what to wear, it feels more like a mental mountain than polynomial long division.

Therefore, when I concoct a breezy outfit that works well, I document it and return to it (making tweaks) all summer long.

I literally threw this combo together when it came down to the wire a couple weeks ago. It was time to walk out the door and I wasn’t crazy about what I was wearing so I threw this on and turns out, that’s the squeeze I needed to get to something great.

I love these long men tanks from Wal-Mart (insert no judgment here) because they are just that – long. I don’t have to wear an additional tank underneath which keeps me cooler (ya just have to watch those pesky bra straps). And I don’t care if vests are in/out/indifferent I like the flow of this one and the fact that it’s not all black.

After I had decided these two pieces will be worn together (remember, the seconds were ticking away and I was about to be late) I quickly glanced at my necklaces and saw this geometric number. I knew the color of the metal would perfectly blend the taupe tank and black/white vest so I put it all together and what do you know? It worked.

With some cuffed jeans and gladiators, I nailed it just like MacGyver with only “two seconds left!”

Another weekend saved. Whew!

Leopard, Jeans & Gladiators

Even though it’s starting to really feel like summer outside, I’m still reaching for my favorite skinny jeans.

Let’s face it, it could be raining balls of fire and I’m still going to reach for these perfectly worn-in jeans from Express because I know my butt will look good as I run ;)

As I put this outfit together the other night, I was excited to find that I could incorporate my gladiator wedges with my jeans if I simply roll the cuff up another half inch. I like to give these shoes their due spotlight, and if my jeans are grazing the top of the shoe I don’t feel as if that’s showcasing them well enough.

The key to pulling off the rolled jean look like this, is to not pair it with a crop top or sweater. You don’t want to look like you recently went through a growth spurt (nor do you want to look like you shrunk your outfit in the wash).

This leopard print top from JCP with the black edging is my favorite kind of piece to have in the summer. Because it’s got that all-over print it’s busy enough to stand alone, and with the black piping around the collar it’s not really conducive to a necklace. All I need to do is throw on a black bracelet and I’m good to go.

Easy breezy.

Now I just need to order up 152 more of these tops and I’ll be set for the rest of the summer!

Rent the Runway

That dress that I’m wearing? If I were to walk up to a BCBG store and buy it off the rack, it would cost me, $398. You know how much I paid to wear it? Less than $70.

I rented it from a little site called, “Rent the Runway.” If you’re like me, thinking you would never spend that much for something you only get to wear once, let me change your mind…

Back in March I poked around their website, found this dress and reserved it in two sizes (at no extra cost).

I didn’t have to traipse from store to store trying dresses on, getting frustrated. I didn’t have to drive all over town tracking down sizes and colors.

I reserved it, then I browsed through the hundreds of pictures of how other girls wore it so I could get an idea of what accessories to add. I knew the neckline deserved it’s day in the sun, so I just planned to wear some diamond hoop earrings and a silver bracelet. Done.

The week before the wedding, I got an email from Rent the Runway letting me know my tracking number and that I could get text alerts to know when my dress was at my front door.

What I didn’t have to do was drag the dress out of my closet and steam it.

Two days before the wedding, the dresses arrive at my doorstep. I open the box, try on both sizes, determine which one fits, set the other one aside and continue on with my day completely relaxed with my look. (In the event of an emergency where neither options fits, RTR gives you a back up plan where they’ll overnight you a dress in a different size if need be).

You get the rental for four days, and you get to determine when it starts. I chose Friday because that would give me enough time on the front end if something had gone wrong, and it gave me Monday to get it back in the mail.

Included in your rental cost is an insurance fee in case anything goes wrong in shipping, and like I said, they send you two sizes which really helps boost your peace of mind.

After it was all over, I packed both dresses into the UPS envelope they provided, sealed it up and dropped it off. Done. Check. (I get to keep the two clip hangers they came on – suckers!! ;)

Now I don’t have another fancy dress in my closet that will never get worn again. I had a designer dress to wear to an important event, and peace of mind in the months leading up to it.

Would I do it again? Oh, you can bet your sweet Badgley Mischka I will.

Dressing for the Outdoors

The funny thing about the weather here in Tennessee? It’s one big surprise party.

This past Thursday (in the middle of May) we opened our doors and…surprise! It’s cold outside!
Watching the weather last week, I quickly realized the short/sleeveless sundress I had planned on for an outdoor wedding rehearsal Thursday night, wasn’t going to work out so well.

Thankfully, this maxi (that I’ve had my eye on since January) had gone on sale and was available in my size at JCP.

I snatched it up, took it home and tried it on with my white leather jacket to make sure it would all work together. Sure enough, it did and I was perfectly comfortable the whole evening.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when getting ready to attend outdoor events this spring/summer…

1. Keep an eye on the weather. Even if you live in a place where the temperature doesn’t change much, you at least need to know if it’s going to rain.

Wednesday night last week we got a whole lotta ran, so I brought along some waterproof flats just in case we had to tramp through mud Thursday night. This helped save my good shoes.

2. As soon as you can, come up with a contingency plan.

If you see the weather doesn’t coincide with what you had planned to wear, immediately start coming up with alternates. By working on your outfit in advance, you save yourself from running around like a headless chicken the day of.

Now I know there are millions of life factors that get in the way of doing these things sometimes, so even if you do end up wearing a sun dress in 55 degree weather, or sinking in the mud in your favorite heels – be sure to press those shoulders back and keep a smile on your face the whole time.

Because I can tell you one thing that’s not pretty – a frowny face that’s dishing out nothing but complaints!
