Styling Family Photos

styling family photos, how to style your family for pictures, family pictures

If you think that I’m exaggerating when I say, I squeal and dance a little bit every time I see a pumpkin or hear a fall reference, you are wrong.

In fact, “squeal” and “a little bit” are under exaggerations.

In the long list of delicious autumn-related things we get to breathe in, eat up, see, wear and do in the coming months, taking family fall pictures is one of them.

I want to help you style your fall family photo shoot my letting you in on my thought process as I put our look together.

Start with one piece.

Minimize the daunting feeling of making multiple people look good, by starting with just one thing. Sometimes it’s what I want Jackson to wear, or it’s something I want to wear.

Either way, having that one piece to build off of really helps lay the ground work for all of the looks.

For our Christmas card picture from last year, I knew I wanted Jackson to have a tie on, so I started with that onesie (that was waaaay to big for him). I pulled out the gray and echoed the maroon a bit in my lipstick. *kissy face.

Coordinate, don’t match.

This isn’t 1985. Your bow doesn’t have to be cut from the same material as your puffy sleeve dress.

In fact, you don’t even have to all be wearing the exact same colors.

For Jackson’s birthday party, I knew I wanted the boys in a variation of gray/black/white/army green, but I wanted to be in a bright color to mix it up. I looked around for something in a deep/bright orange but found this pink and it worked beautifully.

If you have trouble with colors, pay attention to websites you like or the colors of your favorite brand. Those colors are chosen by how they compliment each other, so it will get you in the habit of seeing what works.

Also, Pinterest. I say that like I’m on there. I need 45 more hours in my day for that.

Throw in patterns.

This is my biggest tip of all. Looking back on our family pictures, my favorite thing about our looks are the patterns and how good they look on camera.

Anyone else ever notice that game show contestants are always wearing solid colors? Unless you’re immediately leaving your family portrait to appear on Family Feud, leave the solids at home.

Patterns look great on camera and give your look more depth and visual interest.

Also, a photographer friend once told me that white is a no no, and all black gets lost in the shadows.

Go for patterns.

AND GO FOR FALL BECAUSE IT’S ALMOST OFFICIALLY HERE!! *runs off screaming…

Fall 2016 Inspiration Board

fall fashion, fall 2016, knoxville blogger, knoxville fashion, knoxville fashion blogger, west town mall, elizabeth ogle

Truth? I wanted to fill this fall board with jackets and boooooots.

I also wanted to change my nail polish color to this deep red. So as you can image, this fall I’ll be a pile of boots, jackets and wine red.

So that we both don’t walk around looking like crazy people this fall, here’s a list of things to fill your wardrobe with. And hey, you can get all of these things at West Town Mall.

1. Wine Red Jacket – I will wear this over everything. Pick it up at White House Black Market.

2. Army Green Jacket – This over a white tee, jeans and some booties will potentially be my uniform in a couple months, thanks to Forever21.

3. Black Pleated Skirt – Oh how I love these skirts, Rue21. It’s so flattering because it carves out a waist and gives you a little swing in your step.

4. Chunky Layered Necklace – I’ve been craving one of these, and this one from Ann Taylor is both classic and current (but isn’t everything at Ann Taylor just that?)

5. Big Bag – I like big bags, I can’t lie. And it’s going to help me combine what I need from the diaper bag with what I need for everyday. And this color…well, that’s just good enough to EAT. Pick this one up at Dillard’s or Coach.

6. Tights – Um. Yeah. These from The Limited are what I plan to slip in from September till the last possible hint of winter is gone in April…or maybe May…Junish?

7. GAP Jeans – I don’t have a reason to buy more jeans, but the fact that these and a number of others are on sale at GAP for $12.99 means I’ll start coming up with reasons.

8. Plush Hoodie – American Eagle also has “sexy” in the name of this hoodie, which isn’t often used in the description of these. I’ll bite. Mainly because if I can look sexy and be comfortable? I’m in.

9. Over-the-Knee Boots – Charlotte Russe will have me popping in a lot if they keep these great over-the-knee boots in stock! I’ve been considering these tall boots for years, this is the year I go for it.

I hope this helps get you in the mood for fall! If not, I can email you a whole LIST OF REASONS. :)

Fashion Show Fun

west town mall, bash and dash, back to school fashion show, knoxville fashion, knoxville fashion blogger, knoxville beauty blogger, fall fashion, elizabeth ogle

This week I dipped my toe in the world of Intagram stories. Only because I don’t want my children to walk up to me one day and spout off a string of social media actions that I’m dumbfounded by.

Don’t confuse me for someone who likes change, I’m just keeping it fresh.

I’ve got an exciting weekend coming up – and you can have one too!

Saturday, August 13th I’ll be at West Town Mall emceeing a Back to School fashion show that will take place at noon.

The whole event is called a “Bash and Dash” because it includes a 5k in the morning. I’ll be emceeing the show (taking place in the amphitheater outside JCP) and handing out prizes so it will be a fun day!

If you like kids, puppies, rainbows, laughing, smiling, clothes, me and America, then the event is for you because 6 out of 8 of those things will be there.

Seriously though, children will be walking the runway wearing the latest trends for fall. What part of that sentence do you want to say no to? The children? Seeing what’s on trend? That’s what I thought.

Come on out to the ampitheater right outside of JCPenney at noon, give us 45 minutes and we’ll dazzle you with cuteness!

See you then!

This amazing head shot was brought to you by Brittany Arnold of Southern Roots Photography (and God – cause I’m made in His image ;)

west town mall, knoxville fashion blogger, knoxville beauty blogger, wbir, wbir beauty blogger, knoxville fashion, the limited, back to school styles, west town mall,

I’ve already decided when Jackson goes to school, I’m going to bypass being sad entirely with the fact that I’ll get to buy SCHOOL SUPPLIES!!!

Gah! I can’t wait. But it will get here soon enough. For now I’ll just buy them for fun and use this time of year as an excuse to spiff up my wardrobe.

As mentioned in a previous post, The Limited is offering some new stuff/discounts. The Limited in West Town Mall is now The Limited Back Room. Ooo!

We all know the “back room” is a magical place because it’s where all the good stuff is kept, i.e.: “I don’t know, let me check the BACK ROOM.” Or, “It looks like we did have your size in the BACK ROOM.” How about, “We’ve got some candy in the BAC…ok that’s not right…

Watch my segment from this week to see all the beautiful outfits that can really be mixed and matched with each other, creating an uber chic, uber spiffy wardrobe!

A Great Way to Add Excitement to Your Closet

the limited, how to update your closet, how to prepare your closet for fall, what to wear now and later, wear now and later, knoxville fashion blog, knoxville fashion, west town mall, west town mall fashion consultant, beauty blogger, elizabeth ogle, knoxville fashion

Half of my closet is on the floor.

During Jackson’s party over the weekend, apparently the excitement was too much for my closet rack to bear and it fell off the wall.

Sure it’s annoying to have to dig through a pile to get to anything I want to wear, but on the positive side I’m catching glimpses of some of my favorite sweaters. WHICH MAKES ME WANT FALL NOW.

As I started thinking/dreaming/drooling over cooler days, football and leaves I started thinking about what I would need to make my fall wardrobe work best (of course).

I’m very good at getting sweaters and jackets, but not so great at finding things to wear underneath them. But if I start working on that now, I’ll have great patterned pieces to wear through the close of summer, I’ll get them on sale, and I’ll have them to layer under a sweater later.

That’s a win, win, win, win situation (the forth win being for the fact that IT WILL SOON BE FALL).

The Limited is the first place that comes to mind when I think of great patterned pieces. They’ve got such good quality clothes, and patterned tops that can be easily dressed up or down.

Any of these colorful tops would add excitement to your basic pants, jeans and sweaters…though not to the level where they all jump off the wall like mine did*

The Limited has a great new look as of today, so be sure to stop by their store in West Town Mall.

*No promises.
