How to Maintain a Fresh Face in Summer Heat

In the summer, the only thing I want to feel on my lips is cold gelato.

Rubbing gelato on your lips instead of lipstick is pretty messy and doesn’t produce the perfect pout, turns out….”hypothetically”.

So my pout was pretty pumped when the women at Bare Minerals in West Town Mall told me that there was a moisturizing matte lipstick coming out.

Moisturizing AND matte?! It must be witchcraft!

Nope. It’s just science and the brains behind Bare Minerals.

In my past experience with matte lipsticks I would end up feeling my lips after a while. Like someone had just applied false eyelashes to them – you know that feeling of being aware of every blink when you first put them on? That’s it.

And on top that, the color would wear off like I had some kind of medical issue on my mouth.

This new liquid matte lipstick is amazing. It glides on (a little goes a long way), it stays on nicely and if you get a shade that’s a little bit pinker than your skin tone it looks like you’ve got soft Victoria Secret model lips.

The shade I’m wearing is “Swag” and oh, did I mention that this was 3 hours after I applied it during which time I worked out OUTSIDE. I’m just going to step away now and let you buy some for yourself…

Summer Purse Essential

supergoop, sunscreen, summer purse essential, what to use for sunscreen, how to stay protected from the sun, easy sunscreen, easy sun protection, beauty blogger knoxville

Cover up Buttercup.

This time of year, I become “that mom.” The lady that tracks you down and slathers you with SPF before you can say, “Let’s go outsi…” Which is why when I saw someone talk about this product on an Insta Story, I swiped up immediately and put it in my cart.

Sure my moisturizer and primer include SPF, but that’s not enough! And even if it were, you have to reapply, which means you can either run home redo your entire face, OR just buy this. Your choice.

It’s a wonderful mist/spritz that’s going to protect your skin and allow you to confidently be outside in direct sunlight without doing damage. Also? It’s not going to alter your makeup.

I bought the 1 oz. version so I can throw it in my bag and go. This time of year, you never know when you’re going to be outside for a long period of time (last night I went for a spontaneous walk!). Having this always in my bag gives me peace of mind. Not to mention the fact that I don’t have to rub anything but can spray and go – taking all of 5 seconds to protect my skin. I’ll even use it on other body parts real quick, not just my face.

Something is better than nothing!

You can pick that up at Sephora. I don’t think that smaller version is available on Amazon right now, but the larger one is.

Sun care is SO IMPORTANT. A lesson I wish I would have learned in my 20’s. *Whaaa Whaaaaa So don’t be 20-year-old me and buy this stuff already!

Easy Ways to do Spa Treatments at Home

fresh kale bath company, west town mall bath store, west town mall, ten news this morning, knoxville beauty blogger, beauty blogger east tn, where to find good bath soaps, where to by natural bath products, at home spa, at home spa treatments

Rest and relaxation are just a few feet away.

I’m all about taking time out for myself, even if it’s just a few minutes on the couch with a book. And since I would love to go to the spa, but always talk myself out of paying the money for it, I wanted to find another way to treat myself!

Honestly it’s not the relaxation factor that drives me to do things like this, it’s the “caring for my skin” factor. So even if you have a hard time powering down, think about how much you’re helping your skin by taking some time (any time!) do pamper it a little.

Thankfully, Fresh Kale Bath Company is FILLED with delicious soaps and products that are packed with things like Vitamin E, Aloe Vera and other great ingredients that are good for our skin – giving us the great option of a spa treatment at home.

Watch my segment from this week on 10 New This Morning to see how  you can have your own special pamper session!

Be sure to go visit Fresh Kale in West Town Mall – right outside of JCP!

Check Perfection at the Door

Grace not perfection, emily ley, emily ley book, mom blog, how to do it all mom blog, mom fashion, mom blogger, knoxville mom blog, knoxville mom blogger

Taking some time off the blog this week. But I’ve got some fun content coming up and this post for you to read only if you’re human.

I hope you enjoy and check back in next week!

The sounds I want to hear when sitting down to write? The sound of the washer, dryer and dishwasher all whirring at the same time. The soothing sounds of my toddler and dog snoring just a wee bit as they sail off to dreamland. The “likes” of the picture I just posted on Instagram ticking up and up and up!

Does this happen every time I sit down to write? Nope. Is the sound of someone sailing off to dreamland often me? Yep.

I don’t have to tell you (but I’m going to because it was in my outline for this post) that we live in a time when it’s harder than ever to put away the picture perfect world we have in our heads and be thankful for our reality. Enter: Emily Ley.

Her book Grace not Perfection was top on my t0-read this list year as the title alone helps me realize I’m doing a good job.

Why should you listen to Emily Ley?

Well, she has twins, and a elementary school child which is reason enough right there but let me go on… She runs her own business – one she built from the ground up. It’s super successful and oh at the heart of it is her desire to make women’s lives easier. Also, random fact: she turned down Shark Tank.

If you read any of that and say “Meh” get out and start writing your own book for us all.

Emily is the creator of The Simplified Planner. Oh yeah – this woman has built a business on paper planners in the 21st century. Let’s add that to the list up there. She has struggled with infertility, stressed herself out to the point of breaking and just generally embodies the “when having done all to stand – stand” scripture.

That’s why I was excited to pick up her book and get a snapshot of what drives her.

Here are my takeaways…

It’s okay for the house to be a mess sometimes.

“You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home; you need a home that works for you and makes you feel alive.”

No matter where you fall on the scale of perfection when it comes to your house – at some point in your week you look around and think it needs to be clean/cleaner/what has happened with my life. I cannot function with a messy house. And (while I won’t admit this to many) get a small thrill in cleaning it up. So when I can’t get to it and things are awry I start to unravel a bit mentally.

On the other hand, if I spend my entire free evening cleaning the house and getting it to where I like it, but don’t spend any time with my kid – the other kind of guilt sets in and I go to bed thinking WHY HAVE I FORSAKEN MY CHILD!?

This book reads like you’re sitting across from her having coffee and being told “it’s okay to let go of the mess.” Which is great. But what is also great, is Emily gives pointers as to how to manage it all. Like her laundry basket trick at the end of the night, or her Sunday night ritual. (You have to get the book to see what those are! Muahahaha).

It’s okay to take moments for myself.

“God’s grace shines through our ability to love others with sincere patience, gratitude and acceptance.”

Several months ago I started embracing early mornings. I am in love. Those quiet moments with my Bible and my coffee have revolutionized me as a wife, mother and human. Talk about women empowerment – how about all the women in the world spend some time with their Creator. Am I right? *First bump.

Here’s the thing – we can’t be in touch with that grace she talks about up there, if we’re not recharging ourselves. It’s like the airplane oxygen masks – put one on your face before you go to help someone else. You can’t be a help to others if you’re falling face first into the floor, ya goon. So why do we go through life without putting our “oxygen mask” on first? Selah.

It’s okay to take inventory of your social media.

Emily talks a lot about unfollowing people who aren’t pushing you forward. Get rid of the clutter, get rid of distractions. If there’s someone that pops up in your feed that makes you feel bad, unfollow! If social media as a whole makes you look around your room and wish everything was perfect, get off!

Since reading this book I’ve taken several large blocks of time when I don’t allow myself to get on anything social. It’s so freeing. It’s something I want to do regularly to break my brain of having to check in every 15 minutes.

Obviously I could go on and on but I’ll wrap it up. One of my favorite quotes from the book is this…

The difference between people who achieve their goals and people who don’t is their ability to dust themselves off and wear their dirty outfit proudly.

Towards the end she talks about finding your purpose in life. It’s a great reminder to listen to the tug God has placed inside of you and to hone in on your purpose.

That just shows that regardless of where you are in life as a woman – this book is for you. I can’t think of any woman that doesn’t need the “Grace not Perfect” message. Well, maybe that one girl that always pops up in my Pinterest feed. She’s clearly got it all together, summer winter, spring AND fall – but other than her – we all need this message.

Get your book here. While you wait for it to come in, read this post to see how to fit reading into your busy schedule.

The Surprising Things I do with My Hair

http://www.graymonroe.com/#_l_bp

Weirdo, or genius?

I’m just going to get to it – I wash my hair every 6 days. Every once in a while, I’ll have a busy week that requires me to have fresh hair for an event, so I’ll break that cycle but for the most part – every 6 days.

I just started using conditioner.

For a very long stretch of time, I skipped conditioner and shampooed my hair twice while in the shower. This made a HUGE difference in how my style worked and lasted. But over time I realized I needed to be treating my hair better, so now I…

Shampoo. Condition. Shampoo again.

This makes for a decently long shower, but I say it’s one of the secrets to my hair. Because I’m really getting all of the product out. And when you wash your hair only every 6 days, there tends to be a lot of product build up. I was skipping conditioner because it was making my hair too slick. I didn’t want to loose the fullness of my hair, so that’s where the second shampoo comes in. Plus it leaves me squeaky clean.

Curious as to how to get your hair to last a full 6 days? Read here.

Other things I do to make my style last? I hair spray my hair at night. Not a ton, but just a good all over spray and I let it set before I lay my head down on a silk pillow case. That’s another great secret – because that case is going to save your skin, and your hair style.

I only get my hair cut 4 times a year, but that’s because I keep it long. I trim my own bangs with nail scissors because they give me more control.

And where you get your hair cut is SO VERY IMPORTANT. If you don’t have a hair dresser that listens to you and takes your feedback as well as offers their own, then you don’t know what you’re missing! I’ve gone to Barnes & Barnes in Market Square for over 14 years now and wouldn’t go any where else even if offered large sums of money. Steve Barnes gets me, gets my hair and offers valuable insight while taking into account my opinion and the things I like to do with my hair. If you don’t have that kind of relationship. Go get it. They’re in Market Square next to Stock Burgers.

If you have any more questions about what I do with my hair, feel free to leave them in the comments below, also check out this post and this post for summer hair tips and products!
