Thanks & Giving Part II

chi, remedy coffee house, thankful, picture collage,

I am very against throwing the “b” word around. But this week called for it – it was busy.

There were moments when I felt a little overwhelmed, but as is my policy, I didn’t talk about it. That seems to only make it worse and chances are the person you vent to is or has been busier than you are, so I do my best to suck it up. I just breathe and rest in God and the thought that my life is filled with so many good things to do!

I also cherish moments like this one at Remedy Coffee House. I was in between meetings downtown and got to just take a moment to sit and plan and drink coffee {mostly} internet free (I had my phone but I limited my scrolling).

I think a lot of times what adds to our feeling of being overwhelmed is that we don’t give our brain a quiet moment during the day. When we see one coming, we reach for social medial. I’m forcing myself to limit that. And man does it make a difference.

So that’s the first thing I’m thankful for – a schedule that allows me to take a second and have coffee in a cool place.

Along these lines, I’m thankful for my husband who has quietly pitched in and helped me tremendously around the house this week.

House work is what quickly sends me over the edge on weeks that are jam-packed. Probably because the visual reminder of all that needs to get done follows me around. And when you work from home some days, it’s inescapable. I so appreciate him pitching in and doing things without pointing it out, rubbing in my face or even requiring me to say thank you.

He just does it to help and I love him eternally for that.

Finally, I’m thankful for my straightener (remember that time I said not everything would be deep?).

My big brother got me this straightener over ten years ago and it’s been a beast ever since in spite of the many drops to the floor and that one time I left it on overnight!

Chi is where it’s at, folks, if you’re looking for a new one.

And what I’m giving this week? Well, on Wednesday I gave a little something to a girl who moved here a little while ago. You can tell just by talking to her for a few minutes that she still misses her hometown and that just hits all my weak spots! I know what it’s like to miss your hometown and I also know that it gets better!

What are you thankful for and giving this week!?

Eyeshadow Fail

beauty, beauty product review, product review, eye shadow, taupe, beauty blog

Every Wednesday I try to write about a product I’ve been using lately that I either want to marry or burn in a fiery furnace (I thought the extremes might wake you up).

To give you a hint on how I feel about this weeks product…there will be no engagement pictures, rings or Pinterest-perfect bridesmaids.

I love love my Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in Bad to the Bronze. In fact I wear it almost everyday. Sometimes alone, sometimes layered with other colors. It gives the perfect sheen and gets me out the door very quickly.

But its evil stepsister the Cream Gel Shadow in Tough as Taupe is not so perfect.

I’m currently in the honeymoon phase of a relationship with the color taupe (all these wedding references, what’s up with that?). Seriously though, I love it. So when I found a shadow in the same color, I thought…Yes please!

Unfortunately this color comes off more ashy gray than it does creamy taupe. #Fail. Maybe it will work with your skin color, but if you’re at all the pale white with peachy undertones kind-of-gal that I am, it’s a no go.

The one thing that has saved the color from being thrown in the fiery furnace (which I don’t actually have on hand, by the way) is that it looks good when paired with Bad to the Bronze. Really I can’t think of a color Bad to the Bronze can’t help with. So go get you some of that.

The Best Hair Spray for Sleeping

hair spray, dove, hairspray, how to keep my hairstyle overnight, hair

Every day with my hair is like a surprise party. When I wake up in the morning, two things usually pass through my mind – what have I done with my hair, and how has it survived the night.

It’s not a, “WHAT HAVE I DONE WITH MY HAIR?!” It’s more along the lines of me trying to remember what my hair style was the day before. Did I straighten it? Is it wavy? Did I wear it up? Once the fog clears and I’m walking towards the bathroom, the next question is how did it survive?

Some mornings it looks like I’ve barely laid my head on the pillow – which are the best because it means I hardly have to spend any time on it getting ready! Other mornings (aka: most of the time) it’s me surveying the damage of my pillow rampage (seriously, do I thrash around on that thing?) and trying to determine if it’s salvageable or if I need to wear it up.

I get especially sad when it just can’t be saved because it takes a long time to do my hair and if the style doesn’t survive the night, then all that work only lasted me a couple of hours. There are times when I’ve considered sleeping standing up. No joke.

To help with this problem, I’m always on the hunt for a great hair spray that will lock down my look and make it so that I don’t have to do as much work the next day.

I’ve tried Nexxus, NYM, Tres Semme, Aussie and a whole slew of BirchBox samples, and while they all have their strengths, the one I’ve found to be the best for holding my style overnight, is Dove.

It’s got a great hold to it and really helps it so that I’m not waking up with kinks or untamed poof, but instead I wake up with the hair I went to bed with.

Now I just need to work on remembering to spray down my hair BEFORE I get all snuggled in the bed #hateitwhenthathappens.

The Mid-Day Refresher Kit That Fits in Your Purse

what to put in your purse

There are days when coming home for lunch isn’t so much because I hate trying to decide where to eat, but more because I love getting to refresh my look.

Running Sauntering out the door to work some mornings, I sometimes have a list of things I want to tweak…

  • Change shoes
  • File that one nail
  • Go with a different watch

So a mid-day stop at the house is a great time to do that and maybe spray on some fresh perfume or spritz my face with makeup-setting spray.

But on the days when I go out to lunch with co-workers and/or have some place to be right after work, I cannot tell you how far these little items go towards making me feel like a new person.

1. Compact: Somehow I can never fully finish a compact. But I’m good with that, because the last one always becomes the one I keep in my purse in the event I’ve rubbed my noes too much, or get something on my face. Honestly, this is really just there for my peace of mind.

2. Sample Perfume: Where I once hated perfume samples, I’ve really grown to love them. Not only does it allow you to try out a new scent, but they also make for perfect travel-ready pick-me-ups. Nothing brings on the feeling of being fresh faster than a few little sprits of perfume. This is a roller ball so I don’t have to worry about it leaking all over my bag.

3. Breath Mint: A couple drops of this and it’s like your mouth just took a shower.

4. Bobby Pins: I’m a firm believer in coming home with the hair style you left with, but in the event that you left too early to notice all the hairs you had sticking out in the back, or if it simply MUST GO FROM YOUR FACE – having bobby pins in the purse will certainly help. (I forgot to include a bobby pin in the picture because, ironically enough, I took this picture as I was running out the door to work).

5. Lip Balm: To me lip stick is the prettiest when you’ve applied it right after doing your makeup. So in the afternoon instead of putting more on, I usually follow it up and perk it up with some crazy luxurious lip balm like this Burt’s Bees number. I have about 17 of these things so that no purse is without.

Time to Rejuvenate Your Beauty Routine

September is the perfect time to replenish your skin since we’re finished with most of the heat/chlorine exposure from over the summer, and have yet to hit the really dry weather. It’s also a fun time to start changing up your makeup routine for fall!

Today I have lots of products that will help you from start to finish in this process, and they’re all from Dillard’s in West Town Mall.

Starting with what you’re using to wash your face…

FAB First Aid Beauty wipes – They’re so saturated in cleanser, you could even cut one in half and get double the 30 wipes. This is one of the best selling cleansing lines out there. Free of all bad chemicals, they’ll take off all your makeup and leave behind things like chamomile, aloe and antioxidants.

Philosophy Purity Face Wash – This bottle will last a long time which is great because Philosophy is a trustworthy brand. All natural and repeatedly being voted as the best  – Glamour magazine just did a reader pole and this won for best department store cleanser.

Osmotics – The whole line is great for anti-aging products. This cooling moisture mist is good for refreshing your makeup, leaving you feeling refreshed, calm and cool. It supposed to plump and soothe lines and is anti-inflammatory.

After you wash your face, the next thing you should be applying is a moisturizer…

StriVectin Present Perfect lotion is great for people in their 20’s and 30’s who are wanting to prevent signs of aging. It’s light, can be used both day and night, full of antioxidants and helps to brighten up your skin overall.

Glam Glow – Someone say ultra hydration? You can wear it as a mask for 10-20 minutes and wipe it off, or let it soak in overnight. This line was developed for celebrities then later made available to everyone (the common folk). Which makes me wonder what else those people are holding back from us!? Men can even use it for irritation after shaving.

Bliss Multi-face-eted Anti-Aging Clay Mask – Shrinks pores, reduces lines, evens out skin tone. This one you leave on for only 5-7 minutes twice a week. It’s got all the good kind of ingredients to make your skin look gorgeous – like having a spa treatment at your house!

In order to lock in that moisture and create a smooth canvas for your foundation to sit on, you’ve got to use a primer…

Smashbox Under Eye Primer – Genius. You’ve heard of primer for your lids, this is primer for under your eyes. It’s supposed to brighten that area and allow your concealer to stay all day. You can use it alone or under concealer.

Smashbox Foundation Primer – It claims to minimize your pores for 8 hours. This you can also wear alone, under makeup or use it for touch ups.

And for the grand finale…

Smashbox Full Exposure Palette – Fool proof eyeshadow application. Start in the middle and work your way out on the pallet and your eyes. Use the left side (fluffier) part of the brush for shimmer, and the tighter side for matte color application. There’s an instruction booklet to show you what colors should go where for your eye shape. All of it comes with a mascara for only $50.

Bliss Fabulips – Comes with a lip cleanser (perfect for left over lip stains), scrub, plumper and softening balm. I love this for coming off of summer where we may have gotten sunburned lips. Also good for removing the dark colors that are big this fall…

Smashbox plum scene – Plum is a beautiful color to play with and it doesn’t go on as scary as it looks. You can go really light with it and get a nice fall lip.

They also have a great long wear lip lacquer that stays on like a stain but has the sheen of a gloss.
