A Smooth Tube of Lipstick

Opening a brand new tube of lipstick, popping off the top and moving it so that the angled plain shines with perfection—that’s some good times. Now rubbing it on your lips and seeing that the shade is the exact tint of pink that you were going for and that the flavor makes you think of some exotic honey—that’s some REALLY good times.

Honey is a lot like a good compliment. Those words that pour from someone’s mouth towards you can be like sweet nectar to your soul. Mmm. Yeah. Good.

What’s not good is after those sweet, honeyed words have left their lips is you introducing a vomit flavored jelly bean in the form of, “This old thing? I just pulled it out of the wash pile and duct taped the insides so it wouldn’t give me that rash again, but I’m glad you like it.”

Yes, that is overboard, but my point is to just say a simple, “thank you” after someone has paid you a compliment. Don’t point out the faults of what they liked or the bunions your “pretty” shoes give you.
People don’t want to be reasoned out of their good taste, if they’ve complimented something on you–they like it. You obviously like it or you wouldn’t be wearing it, so revel in your shared good taste and say a simply THANK YOU. That is all. In fact, you don’t even have to go into the fact that it was on clearance at Goodwill or that someone else picked it out for you. Let them walk away with the illusion that you have money to spend and really good taste to help spend it.
