How to Look Awesome at a Christmas Party

ann taylor, christmas parties, what to wear to an office christmas party, sparkly sweaters

Forget bright copper kettles, sequence is one of my favorite things.

Which is why I love getting dressed for holiday parties. It’s practically mandatory that you incorporate some kind of sparkle or shine! Ok, not “mandatory” but it’s certainly acceptable (ha, “mandatory sparkle”).

I understand that not everyone gets that thrilled feeling in their gut when it’s time to put together a party outfit, which is why I’m here! Let me help you. And if you’re reading this, that’s step one. Good job.

Step two? Balance. As is true with any outfit, balance is key. So if you’re doing a full on sequence top, balance it out with tweed pants. If you want to do sequence pants (they’re all the rage) pair them with a simple button down and a cozy sweater (my advice for that is to not wear those pants to a party where you’ll be sitting down a majority of the time – you want people to see you sparkle!)

Step three…Break out of your box a little bit and have fun! The time to take yourself too seriously is not when you’re going to an event that will feature a game called, “White Elephant.” Find something with a bit more pizzazz than you usually wear and rock the heck out of it! A Christmas party is the perfect place to do that! And if you spend a little bit more money on something sparkly, then wear it again New Year’s Eve.

Step four: Get yourself down to Ann Taylor in West Town Mall tonight so I can help you inspire/create/edit your holiday look! Remember that time I said I love getting dressed for Christmas parties? I’ll take some of that love and rub it off on you, if you’ll come on over tonight and hang with me. Anytime from 6-8pm I’ll be there completely ready to answer your questions and help guide you to your best Christmas party look yet!

Listen it’s possible to look gorgeous, age appropriate, office appropriate and Christmas-y all at the same time! Ann Taylor has an amazingly beautiful selection of clothes and jewelry that will really jazz up your look. And did I mention there will be a special discount tonight? I didn’t. Hey, THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL DISCOUNT. So you basically get a personal stylist, save some money, and will snatch the breath of everyone who looks at you as you walk in the door to your office Christmas party. THAT sounds like a Merry little Christmas.

What to Wear This Weekend

weekend wear full on

weekend wear half view

Weekend wear shouldn’t be complicated. But somehow on a Saturday morning/afternoon/night when I’m standing in my closet trying to figure out what to wear, it feels more like a mental mountain than polynomial long division.

Therefore, when I concoct a breezy outfit that works well, I document it and return to it (making tweaks) all summer long.

I literally threw this combo together when it came down to the wire a couple weeks ago. It was time to walk out the door and I wasn’t crazy about what I was wearing so I threw this on and turns out, that’s the squeeze I needed to get to something great.

I love these long men tanks from Wal-Mart (insert no judgment here) because they are just that – long. I don’t have to wear an additional tank underneath which keeps me cooler (ya just have to watch those pesky bra straps). And I don’t care if vests are in/out/indifferent I like the flow of this one and the fact that it’s not all black.

After I had decided these two pieces will be worn together (remember, the seconds were ticking away and I was about to be late) I quickly glanced at my necklaces and saw this geometric number. I knew the color of the metal would perfectly blend the taupe tank and black/white vest so I put it all together and what do you know? It worked.

With some cuffed jeans and gladiators, I nailed it just like MacGyver with only “two seconds left!”

Another weekend saved. Whew!

Weekend Outift Inspiration

I have a big problem when it comes to weekend clothes – I never know what to wear.

Why it is that casual dressing is what throws me into a confused tizzy, I’ll never know. But honestly, it’s dressing for Saturday morning breakfast that most often leaves me standing perplexed in my closet, just staring at everything.

I’ve decided to put an end to this. First off, I’m going to make it a point to buy more “weekend” clothing. I’m going to start stocking up on casual shirts.

Next up I’ll need some more casual flat shoe options (which I’ve taken care of in my next Style Setter blog, stay tuned for that).

I’ve got the jeans part covered. Either my favorite pair of skinnies or my boyfriend jeans will do every time.  So next time I’m out, my goal will be to buy pieces such as those to fill the voids in my closet and hopefully eradicate that confusing time period on Saturday mornings.

What about you? Is there a certain occasion that stumps your ability to quickly put together an outfit?

Is it because that part of your closet is lacking, maybe?

Take note of it next time you find yourself with “nothing to wear” and start buying things that will help put an end to that frustration.

And as always, come back for more fabulous Spiff on Monday! Have a great (well dressed) weekend :)

What to Wear When Going Out This Weekend

Weekends seem to fill up fast these days, which translates into a lot of outfit planning.

If your March is anywhere near as booked as mine, let me help alleviate some of the outfit planning pressure and give you an idea of what to wear to say… a great evening eating sushi with friends (insert whatever night time activity you’re planning for the weekend here).

A couple weekends ago I got to eat fabulous sushi with fabulous friends, so I knew right off that what I wore would have to be equal parts casual and cool.

This time of year I’ll take any excuse to get into my white blazer, so I thought to balance out it’s crisp whiteness I would add all black. Nothing but black. Blackity black darkness.

I did this in the form of black skinnies, a black shirt, and black boots. All black everything.

What this did was create a simple silhouette that was casual and cool all the while letting my white blazer take the spotlight. When adding a fancier piece like this blazer, it’s good to keep everything else low key. Especially when you’re going out with a crowd to a restaurant that can go either way (and sushi restaurants can definitely go either casual or dressy).

You never know what everyone else is going to be wearing so you want to maintain that balance of dressy and casual.

I love the little embellishments on these jeans. There’s some on the butt too *ah-wink.

I added this cool metallic statement necklace because there was that big empty space right there that needed something.

But besides a watch, that’s all the jewelry I went with. The final touch was one of my favorite clutches. Black and white snake skin with a brass knuckle handle. Since it was an edgy outfit, why not carry an edgy purse that can also double as self defense tool when walking back to my car which was a ways away from the restaurant.

Try something like this for your next Friday night out and see how cool you feel!
