An Easy Way to Determine Your Shape

how to know your shape, how to determine your body shape, body shape, dressing for your body shape

So you can look and feel spiffy always.

Don’t be shy, hesitant, sad, frustrated or fearful about figuring out your shape – that’s an order!

You are beautiful just the way you are. And if you don’t accept what you look like now, you’ll never be happy. You are beautiful. Let’s lean into the body we’re living in and figure out the best way to dress it!

Once you determine your true shape you can consistently walk out the door in looks that flatter your figure and give you spiff in your step!

Even if you think you know what body shape you are, go through the steps – you may be surprised at the outcome, or you may not. Either way it’s good to have these numbers (hello, online shopping people!) and it’s good to be reminded of what works best on your frame.

Here we go…

Get a cloth tape measure (or some yarn and a yard stick) and determine the size of your shoulders right at the top (to where it’s almost popping off); your bust at the fullest point (without squishing); then measure your waist just above your belly button; and your hips – slightly below your hip bone and around the biggest part of your bum.

Now compare those measurements to this chart, which I got off of WhoWhatWear.com – who does a fantastic article on how to determine your shape and even provides a link to where you can use math formulas GROSS MATH. Haha ;)

Next, let’s talk about the style goals for your newly determined shape…

Rectangle

Goals: Creating curves!

Do this by grabbing pieces that will give you volume. Ruffles, wraps, pleating, a-line skirts – all those things will add volume to your frame and give you the illusion of curves.

Apple

Goals: Obscuring your mid-section.

Do this with pieces that will flow over your waist line like billowy maxi dresses or tunics. Also, drop waist dresses are a good idea.

Inverted Triangle

Goals: Creating the illusion of lower body curves to balance out your figure.

Do this by going with taylored tops/jackets – items that will highlight your waist and draw the eye downward. Wide leg pants would also help!

Pear

Goal: Downplay your lower half, show off your tiny waist.

Do this by going with fit and flare dresses and a-line skirts. Stick to things like dark wash skinny jeans/pants to visibly draw the eye towards your waist and upper half.

Hourglass

Goal: Draw all the attention to your waist.

The half tuck trick I talked about here is a great way to do that. Also wrap dresses and things that cinch at your waist – like jackets and dresses.

Knowing your shape will help you getting dressed EVERY DAY. So it’s important to figure out your figure – but it’s even MORE important that you remain content with what you look like! Let’s decide to make every day a spiffy day in the skin we are in :)

Slip on Style with These Sneakers

And you won’t want to slip them off.

Slip on sneakers have officially made their mark…in my closet.

I can’t get enough of this style of shoe! Legit. I wanted so many versions I told my husband last year that I might have a problem. Why do I love them so much?

Because they fall exactly in line with my style goals for the year – taking my athliesure looks up a notch. And that’s exactly what they do.

Pair them with black workout tights, a t-shirt and jacket and you’ve got an ultra comfortable, ultra cool look to run around in all day. Pair them with nice jeans and an embellished sweater that can make you look like you belong in fancier settings. These puppies are so. versatile. yet oh so comfortable.

Listen, these shoes have gotten me to quit reaching for my boots and that’s saying something. In a winter like we’re currently having (I’M LOOKING AT YOU, 70 DEGREE DAYS) these are a great alternative to warmer shoes.

I’ve got two pairs I’ll have to give up once spring officially hits, but the rest I’ll be rocking all summer (especially when the toes are in need of a paint).

I’ve pulled together pairs that are a splurge and pairs that are cheapo so you have options! If you’re not quite sure if you’ll love them, go for a cheap pair and see what you think!

Wear this rose gold (or any metallic version) now and well into summer…

Splurge – Naturalizer $69.99 – Dillard’s

Save – Charlotte Russe $15

Of course black works all year round too, and the perforated style of this pair by Sperry will keep your feet so cool. But if you’re more of a glitter gal, the save version down there will be right up your alley!

Splurge – Sperry $59.99 – Dillard’s

Patterned shoes are wonderful if you’re at all like me and don’t buy a ton. The only problem with the snake skin one’s below is you’ll have to say goodbye during the summer months. But that’s when you can temporarily replace them in your heart and on your feet for a pretty floral pair.

Splurge – Vionic $129.99 – Dillard’s

Save-ish (on florals) – Ralph Lauren $50 – Dillard’s

Special guest star (who was super enthralled with a stick)!

Piko tops are a great thing to have in your arsenal. They’re drapey…Ha, I was going to keep listing things, but really, that’s all we need!

But you know I’m going to want to wear my top more than one way. Which is why I wanted to share how I style my Piko.

Let’s start with how I accessorize it…

I definitely like to showcase a necklace on a top like this because it gives you such great real estate. Anything dainty would kind of get lost in all the shirt. A statement necklace or a great long one layered into a choker like this one are my favorite two options.

If you want to watch pregnant Elizabeth talk about accessorizing a Piko top click here!

Now let’s talk about how we’re actually wearing it…

Any time a top has a wide neck you know what I do? I pull it down to show off my shoulder. It gives the top a whole new look! And honestly the biggest thing I don’t like about these tops is how wide their neck is (hello, bra straps!) so take full advantage of that and wear it off your shoulder.

Next… Knot it! No, we’re not playing a game of tag #seewhatididTHERE?

Because these tops are so voluminous, you can knot the front and give it, yet again, a whole new look! And don’t worry, I have a trick for keeping the knot in place. These guys – the tiny clear hair ties normally used for little girls hair can also be used to keep your knot in place and no one would be the wiser.

Both the Piko and the necklace came from Fiore Boutique in West Town Mall! They are my Piko dealer. Love. Them.

Pretty Spring-Like Picks from JCP

jcp, west town mall, jcpenney, knoxville shopping, knoxville blogger, knoxville style, style consultant, elizabeth ogle, spring picks, what to buy for spring, wear now and later

Let’s be clear, winter isn’t over yet.

You know I’m a lover of cold weather. But as I walked through JCP the other day, pulling things to take pictures of, I looked down and realized what I had was the beginning of a good spring wardrobe.

As usual, I sold myself on just about everything I put on – how do these people DO IT? I’ve been reading dressing room posts for a while, and I’ve never fully thought about how tempting it would be to buy everything every time. Maybe they do. Who knows.

PS: Everything I try on came from the Liz Claiborne section!

Rain Jacket

I truly almost sold myself on the polka dot rain jacket… The only thing that held me back was the pile of jackets that are currently on our coat rack. But this number is pretty cute! It’s on sale for $42 and I’m wearing a medium.

 Trench Coat

I’m in the middle of reading a book about building your wardrobe, and the one thing I keep reading (and have heard before) is that a trench coat is a good basic to have on hand.

I don’t really have a good trench coat.

But it is so versatile and can work in almost all the seasons. This is a great option. Makes me feel like a chic spy! It’s 30% off right now and will ring in at $56. I’m wearing a medium but it runs a little big so I could’ve done a small.

Denim Jacket

Speaking of outerwear every woman needs in her closet – cue the denim jacket!

I’m partial to a darker denim because it goes with all my black and this is a great dark wash.

My piece of advice when shopping for a denim jacket? Style it how you would actually wear it when trying it on. I will always wear it with the sleeves rolled up, so I rolled them up. That way you can truly decide if it will work with your ascetic or not.

Love the lines working down vertically – makes it feel more taylored to my body. This is a great deal too! Most run way more than $42.99

Chambray Shirt

Speaking of versatile denim pieces – this shirt! Love the lightweight look of a chambray shirt. Also love that the buttons don’t go all the way down. That will make it work under other shirts sooo well because you won’t have the bulk of the buttons all the way down.

This is a great purchase and honestly I’ve talked myself into going back and getting it. It’s only $29.99 and I promise once you break down the cost-per-wear you’ll be paying about ten cents every time you wear it (aka: it will be often!)

Striped Sailor Jacket

I spied a jacket like this in the sale section of a website and it peaked my interest. Then when I tried it on I realized what a great addition this would be to a spring wardrobe.

Pair it with ripped jeans and a simple white tee, OR throw it over a lightly floral patterned maxi dress. The navy and white stripes are basically requirements for spring dressing and the lightweight feel will be perfect for the cooler days/nights (THAT I PRAY TO GOD WE HAVE ALL THROUGH SPRING BECAUSE I LOVE COLD WEATHER AND JACKETS).

PSS: notice how my bold lip goes with everything I’m wearing?! Goes to show how versatile a fuchsia lip can be. Check out my instagram profile to see what matte lipstick is my fav (see: Spiffy Lips)

PSSS: I can’t, CAN’T get enough of these products. I’ve been slathering myself with all things lavender since Tuesday. And what’s even better? They’re located right outside of JCP so you can go grab your spring wardrobe then head on over to Fresh Kale Bath Company to smell good. WIN WIN. :) You’re welcome.

Where to Score Deals in West Town Mall

new york and company, west town mall, leopard jacket, style help, how to style a leopard jacket, addidas, hollister jeans, knoxville style, knoxville style blogger, elizabeth ogle, how to find deals, how to shop smart

IMG_8313

No, this isn’t click bait.

You have to laugh at the absurd wording those articles use that try to get you to click on them. Wording such as…”If you’re paying full price for J Crew YOU ARE BURNING YOUR MONEY IN A BONFIRE OF DOOM.” Thanks for the tip, guys, but I think I’ll be all right.

Don’t worry, you get none of that judgement here on the Spiff. Just good ole’ fashion deal advice (from stores you may not have thought about going into).

Like how Hollister runs their jeans on sale for $25 pretty often. That’s how I got these jeans I’m wearing in the picture. And let me tell you, Hollister is not looking for mom’s in their 30’s. Their marketing doesn’t point anywhere near that age range, but you put jeans and $25 in the same sentence and you’ve got this mom in her 30’s in your store. Plus these jeans are great.

Second place to score good deals (that you may not have ventured into in a while) is New York & Co. I go in there often because they are ALWAYS running a good sale. Their jewelry especially is a good deal.

Wandering in there the other day scored me this jacket for ten dollars! And while I definitely don’t condone buying things just because they’re on sale, I knew this patterned jacket would jazz up a lot of my neutral tops and fit into my style goal of taking my athliesure looks up a notch.

(New York & Co. is also a great place to get things if you’ve got long legs, FYI. They have lots of great pants options for tall girls who like to wear heals – and we all said, Praise God!)

The fun in popping in stores that are out of your normal routine, is you never know what you’re going to find or what kind of deal you’re going to score. Don’t let your age, style or the fact that you’re not a college student any more stop you from finding great things to wear at really fantastic prices.

Because if you’re paying full price for anything any where, you’re practically TORCHING YOUR CAR AND ALL THAT IS PRECIOUS TO YOU. ;) jk.
