6 Bridal Shower Looks

I am a bridal shower professional.

This spring I spent and entire month of Saturdays attending bridal showers, so I’d like to pass on to you all of my recently gained, infinite wisdom on how to dress for them.

First off, always dress up for a bridal shower.

You can never go wrong by dressing up, for many reasons.
One: in a group of women I think it’s better to err on the side of being “too dressy.”

Two: it makes a statement to the bride that says, “I value you enough to give you my best, and I know your taste is beautiful so I wanted to match it by dressing up.”

Ok, maybe the bride doesn’t think that exact sentence when you walk in the door, but I guarantee that looking like you made an effort, won’t go unappreciated (I still remember the people from my showers that did not).

Now if you have a string of showers on your list like I did, don’t panic. I’m not saying you need to go out and buy 5 new dresses. I didn’t. In fact, I had a completely different look for each shower, and never spent over $100 for any of it (for five of them, I spent less than $40).

Here’s your strategy: shop early.

The great thing about bridal showers is that you can see them coming a mile away. When both my sister and sister-in-law got engaged last year, I immediately started looking at dresses. Because I knew, Shower-mageddon 2014 was coming ;)

By doing that, I was able to pick up so many things on super sale and saved myself hundreds of dollars.

And after you buy your dress, immediately try it on and accessorize it even if the shower is weeks away (usually I’ve accessorized it in my head before the cashier even hands me back my card, but you don’t have to do it that fast).

This will certainly help the day of the shower, especially if you think it starts at 2:00pm, when in fact it starts at 11:00am and you don’t realize this until you’re a sweaty mess and it’s an hour before it’s supposed to start (hypothetically speaking, of course).

Which brings me to my next point, always check the time of the shower. Even if you think you know it, check it!

I hope all my recent shower experience has helped you. Now that I’ve got all of those showers under my belt, it’s time to start going to weddings! My sister-in-law is getting married this weekend!! Yay! :)

Neutral Stripes Two Ways

If you didn’t already know this, I did not get into fashion blogging for the pictures.
All I want to do is write.

If I could just sit down and write all day, I would do it. But, as I’ve said before, this is obviously a picture driven business so I’ve got to suck it up.

I was really digging this shirt that I picked up at Old Navy last weekend, so when I got home from work and realized I had the building to myself for a bit, I took that opportunity to snap a few pics (it starts to get awkward when neighbors are coming home and scooting around your camera in the hallway :)

Our shirts go so well together ;)

These neutral stripes are such a fresh departure from the more graphic black and white ones I can’t seem to keep my hands off of. Plus I really love the fact that the shirt is sheer, it gives it more of that spring time vibe.

I also love the fact that I can still pair this with leopard for a little pattern mix.

I wore the shirt first with the white pants and felt like the wide legs and long shirt was too much volume. That’s why I tucked it in, in the front only (I love the laid back vibe of a shirt tail hanging out in the back. Plus it’s flattering if you have more junk in your trunk).

Then when I paired it with skinny jeans, I needed the volume so un-tucked worked perfectly. I also really loved breaking out my teal hoops because this whole neutral thing needed some color, and those are great to have around for just that reason.

They’re a little fresh/a little funky. As are you ;)

Have a great Tuesday!

A Clever Trick for Your Spring Dresses

This is going to sound like something one would say before breaking out into song, but I promise there will be no singing afterwards…

Inspiration is all around us.

Particularly outfit inspiration. I am on constant watch to see how people are wearing things, so that I can tweak my own style, or add something new I may have never thought about.

While attending my 6th wedding shower of the season last weekend (it’s my own version of 27 Dresses), I obtained some major inspiration from my good friend Alicia.

Cleverly, she took one of her infinity scarves and used it as a wrap!

Let me tell you why this works on so many levels…

It keeps you warm in a comfortable way. Unlike a wrap, a larger infinity scarf like this will more easily stay in place because it’s looped around your arms rather than hanging on them (I’m sure there’s some term from physics that tells us why, but I can’t even come up with a fake one so forget it).

This also helps to reduce the amount of skin you’re showing if you’ve got say, an open back dress, or even a strapless one you may want to wear without baring it all.

I love the fresh color choice of teal against the black and white, and I especially love the fact that she did some pattern mixing by topping off the look with peacock patterned earrings.

It goes to show you, not all outfit inspiration has to come from Pinterest ;)

Rainy Day Style

Rainy day outfits

Those April showers that bring May flowers? Yeah, they waited till the last possible second in April to spring up. I’m ok with it, though. I like rainy days. They make being inside so cozy (anything that reminds me of fall/winter ;)

The only beef I have with a rainy day is the outfit problem it posses.

I realize, that I’m going to be outside a total of 9 minutes and inside for hours. However, it’s those few minutes outside that can really shape how comfortable you feel in your clothes for those several hours inside.

That’s why I like to choose outfits that are “water proof.”

Outfits such as this one…

I liked the cuffed pants because there are few things in this world that annoy me faster than wet pant legs. Eww. I don’t like to take the chance that the bottoms of my skinnies might get wet, so I will either cuff them or wear any other pair that doesn’t go down past my ankle.

Next, I always feel like wrapping up in something on a rainy day (makes it easier to get out of bed).

A lot of my sweaters are too wintery, so I reach for a blazer. This cotton blazer from Target is perfect because it feels like a sweater but has the structure of a jacket. Which means it’s sharp enough for the office, warm enough for my requirements, and doesn’t scream a particular season as these babies are good to wear all year round (praise the Lord for that).

And on rainy days, I never expect my hair to sit straight, so I will lean into the weather and let my hair do it’s curly/wavy thing. You know what your hair will and won’t do on these types of days, so try to plan accordingly.

For shoes, I’d like (of course) to curl up in my Ugg boots and avoid wet feet entirely, but since that isn’t an option, cute Croc flats like these will keep your feet completely dry (just avoid the squeaking problem I had and wear socks).

That’s my formula for the perfect rainy day outfit! I hope we get some more of these (without the thunder and lightning part).

Happy Spring!

Weekend Outift Inspiration

I have a big problem when it comes to weekend clothes – I never know what to wear.

Why it is that casual dressing is what throws me into a confused tizzy, I’ll never know. But honestly, it’s dressing for Saturday morning breakfast that most often leaves me standing perplexed in my closet, just staring at everything.

I’ve decided to put an end to this. First off, I’m going to make it a point to buy more “weekend” clothing. I’m going to start stocking up on casual shirts.

Next up I’ll need some more casual flat shoe options (which I’ve taken care of in my next Style Setter blog, stay tuned for that).

I’ve got the jeans part covered. Either my favorite pair of skinnies or my boyfriend jeans will do every time.  So next time I’m out, my goal will be to buy pieces such as those to fill the voids in my closet and hopefully eradicate that confusing time period on Saturday mornings.

What about you? Is there a certain occasion that stumps your ability to quickly put together an outfit?

Is it because that part of your closet is lacking, maybe?

Take note of it next time you find yourself with “nothing to wear” and start buying things that will help put an end to that frustration.

And as always, come back for more fabulous Spiff on Monday! Have a great (well dressed) weekend :)
