Boutique Critique!

This is not so much for your benefit, as it is for me to fulfill my dream of being a reviewer so I hope you enjoy this as much as I do…

Once a month the spiff is going to devote a day to reviewing a boutique. I will visit various places around town (K-town that is) and let you know whether it’s worth your presence in the future or not. I will also let you know if the store I visit is a link in a chain so that if you do not live in our beautiful metropolis you may visit it in your neck of the woods.

For my very first visit I decided to go to a place I often hear people wonder aloud about. It’s the consignment shop that sits at the very far corner of Market Square, they call themselves, “Reruns”.

What they lack in cordiality they make up for in window dressing. You are guaranteed to see the cutest things in their windows, and not just cute pieces but really artfully put together looks that are very alluring. But the store is aptly named in that they’re about as excited as you get when you sit down to watch your favorite show only to find out it’s a Rerun.

Once you enter you don’t have to worry about getting a pesky, “Hello”, or “Welcome to Reruns”, no they don’t bother with all that happy greeting crap, they just stare at you as you enter causing you to wonder what malady you inflicted upon their day by walking in.

The clothes on the rack are by no means near the par they set in the windows. It’s generally the stuff you see in every other consignment shop-that ever popular tank top that looks like it’s lived through World War II and is somehow always more appealing to them then the skirt you try to bring in and sell (just, you know, hypothetically speaking).

There were a couple things I would have considered, for example, a skirt from Banana Republic that was just darling, but was labeled $35 which I think is barely below what it would have cost if I bought it new at their outlet. So no thanks.

There were some good jeans with brand names like “7 for all man kind” which I have been longing for, but took a pass at seeing as how they were $40 (not a bad price considering the brand, but still pretty high for being used).

Their sizes range from 4 to 16 and they do have some things for men. They even have shoes and accessories. In fact, they had a pair of shoes from White House Black Market that have been on my “to buy” list, but didn’t have them in my size. They were, however, the only thing I found to be reasonably priced. In White House/Black Market they were around 80, in Marshall’s they were 35 and there at Reruns they were going for 25 so not too bad. I would have made an exception to my “Don’t buy used shoes” rule for those heels-they’re gorgeous.

I guess as far as selection goes they’re not unlike other consignment shops in that it’s a hit or miss. Just be prepared to have the expectations set by their windows drastically lowered, and your presence barely acknowledged.
