Hey there, Two Thousand Sixteen!

We are two months into the year now, which means we are two months closer to the start of fall! (Haha! Just kidding. Not really, I’m pretty jazzed that we’re getting closer to starting this cold weather all over again ;)

I want to preface my next question with the fact that this is a judgment-free zone. So if you don’t have an answer or your answer isn’t what you think it should be, know that we’ll shun you forever. No, but we will offer a high-five and say you’ve still got time to start…

How are your goals coming for the year?

Can you remember what they are?

I’ll check in with mine, then you share yours!

The style goals I set for myself started with buying more tunics and dresses. I’ve bought 4 tunics since the year started. They’re the perfect thing to wear when I need to move freely, look good and feel comfortable (especially with a 7 month old).

My next goal was to pair down my closet to only pieces that I wear. I’d say I’m doing only so so with this goal.

I did a big closet clean out at the beginning of January and pulled out a lot  – like say SIX POUNDS of jewelry! And just the other day when I bought a pair of shoes (Belk at West Town Mall is having an ah-mazing shoe sale) I got rid of a pair of shoes I don’t wear very often. I’d like to keep that rotation going.

Unfortunately I am still passing pieces I haven’t worn in a while, so there’s a little work left to do.

My last style goal was to have more casual pieces (much akin to the athleisure trend). I’ve bought a couple things in this category, but I’d like to get more. I’ve also got my eye on a black pair of Nike’s that I think will be the perfect casual footwear for bopping around town.

Pants are my next goal. I need to revitalize my collection and venture outside of the jeans world (but I’ve got a jeans wish list the length of my skinnies).

Do you have style goals set for yourself? Share them!

By setting style goals you shop smarter, and end up with a closet built specifically around your needs rather than your impulses. And that translates to a happier, more put-together you!

Figure out the holes in your wardrobe and build goals around them so you can walk out of your closet ready to take on the rest of the year!

Outfit deets: skirt (I got on super sale at JCP a couple years ago but that links to a similar one) / sweater (I picked up all the way back in 2015 ;) at a local boutique – Reap The Sew)

Enjoy Winter While You Prep for Spring

If you were looking for a blog that complains about winter, you’ve come to the wrong place.

I get absolutely giddy when the news starts reporting snow fall. I mean it – I start dancing around the house like it’s Christmas. I love hunkering down and watching every snow report from all over the city, taking a walk outside with the pupster, sledding, eating snow cream, having my husband trapped at home and all to myself for a couple days. It’s fantastic.

But I will say, after the whole thing is over it is nice to get out of the house for a bit. Get away from everything you’ve been staring at for days, maybe go to the store and buy some new things to freshen up your house and get prepped for spring (I’m throwing the “prep for spring” thing in there for others who wish this weather was gone).

This week on the show I got to showcase all the great things Altar’d State in West Town Mall has to offer. So watch this brief clip and get yourself in there to freshen up!

Similar necklace; swacket; skirt; shoes; undershirt came from here (believe it or not).

My favorite purchase of this fall/winter has hands down been this sweater (or jacket…maybe swacket?).

I actually took it right off the back of an unsuspecting mannequin, and I’m so glad I did (she had it coming). I love having one cool go-to piece that I can grab and consistently feel good in throughout the colder months. It’s especially nice when I’m stuck trying to figure out what to wear – I just grab this and style it differently.

This time I changed things up by buttoning it up. It works especially well with this voluminous skirt and really helps showcase this gorgeous statement necklace my Aunt Kathleen got me for my birthday this past year.

Think about any swackets you’ve got, could you get more mileage out of them by wearing them buttoned?

Maybe now that you’ve learned the word “swacket” you’re confused as to what the proper pronunciation would be, AND need help styli

3 Unexpected Reasons to Love Winter

There are very few people out and about with a smile on their face as big as mine. I can’t help but get a little giddy with this snow.

I know people are tired of it (don’t ever move north…not even slightly. We’ve only had 2 weeks of it, they’ve had months) and I know it’s popular to complain, but I’m loving it. And I’m going to try and pass on some of that excitement to you…

snow day, snowbir, knoxville, snowmageddon, snow woman, how to decorate a snow man, playing in the snow, winter, reasons to love winter

1. No bugs.

When was the last time you saw a bug? I can’t remember at this point. Because by now they’re all either dead or hibernating or doing whatever bugs do – just not out in the open, thank God. Relish in that, because as soon as spring hits they’re going to be every where and in the summertime it’s hard to walk around outside without getting bit. That’s not the case now and I’m loving every minute of it.

2. You’re forced to slow down.

I’ve learned over the past two weeks that I’m a hard core home body. I’ve not been sad to have to stay at my house, I’ve been pretty content. And even when I start to feel frustrated, I think about the fact that in just a few short weeks we’re going to be running at high speed – especially on the weekends. So soak up this time of rest. At some point in the coming months, you may find yourself thinking you wish you could have just a lazy day inside – enjoy those days now. Everything is cancelled, soak up the free time.

3. Bundling up is less work than a bikini.

Yesterday I made the biggest snowman (actually snow-woman) I’ve ever built, ever. In fact this round of snow is the most I’ve ever seen in my life. Building it made me think of playing in the sand on the beach, but one thought made me realize it was 1,000 times better than that. You know why? Because I didn’t have to worry that my boob was going to pop out, or be concerned with how closely I had shaved. Yes the summer heat is nice, but it’s so much work. Being outside in the winter means I have to think about what scarf to layer over my sweater – not whether or not I’ve painted my toes, shaved high enough on my legs and gotten an even tan. Let’s all revel in this low-maintenance time period. I certainly am.

Each season has its pros and cons. I choose to enjoy the pros in whatever season I am, simply because life is better that way. And it’s what Paul did in the Bible…”I have learned to be content in whatever the circumstances.” -Philippians 4:11

And hey, if you have found yourself being a little less content with being inside…come to West Town Mall tomorrow! I’ll be hanging out at The Limited from 12-2:30pm. I’m there to help you find some pieces that you can wear now AND later. Plus if you have accessorizing questions, or need help with a certain piece, bring it in! We can chat all about it and get you feeling good in your clothes. Can’t wait to see you there!

Wear Now & Later

We’ve hit one of the sweet spots in the year where retailers are practically shoving merchandise into our bags and asking for mere pennies in return.

But as you can remember, one of my goals this year is to not purchase things just because they’re on sale.

Here’s a list of items that can we worn in the dead of winter and well into spring, and they all happen to be super cheap.

Even if you can’t find these exact items in the store (that’s the risk you take when writing about things that are on sale), you’ll at least have guidelines so you know what to spend your money on.

All of these pieces, by the way, can be found at different retailers in West Town Mall…

new york and company, gap, palazzo pants, sequin sweater, colored drop earrings, sweater, earrings, pants, leather booties, ann taylor, yellow tote, francesca's, bag, what to wear in the winter, wear now and later, clothes for winter and spring

1. Palazzo Knit Pants from New York & Co. – Remember that post I did about volume? Well, these pants are a great example of putting volume on the bottom. Balance them out with a form fitting turtleneck or v-neck sweater, and warm up your toes in the winter by pairing them with your chunkiest boot. With the pant leg being so wide, no one will be able to tell! Then keep rocking them into the spring with high heels, a fitted tank, a patterned cardigan and a long swingy necklace. They’re on sale for $10 so the cost-per-wear ratio is un. real.

2. Sequin Sweater from GAP – A chunky sweater like this is going to really keep you warm and cute, especially if you layer a crisp white button down underneath it and pair it with jeans and boots. But the shiny polka-dots and gray color is happy enough to transition well into spring where you could rock it with cuffed boyfriend jeans and some bright pink heels. Gosh, I think I’ve talked MYSELF into buying this one!

3. Kiera Leather Booties from Ann Taylor – This is a classic shoe, so regardless of the season, if you see these puppies on sale snatch them up. They’re especially great to have now because you can wear them with sheer or opaque black tights, and later with cuffed boyfriend jeans. Badda bing. Badda boom.

4. Teardrop Treasure Earrings from Charming Charlie – This past year I fell in LOVE with colored drop earrings. Especially as an owner of a lot of black and a whole lotta gray, simple earrings with color like these really jazz up a neutral outfit. Grab them for $8 and use them to punch up some of your drab winter sweaters, then break them out again in the spring when you buy a floral patterned dress that incorporates this same gorgeous turquoise.

5. Kennedy Solid Tote from Francesca’s – I apologize, I thought this bag was on sale but it’s not. But before you go crossing it off your list, lets think of how attention grabbing this color would be on a cold, overcast winter day… Now let’s imagine how beautifully it would transition into spring with it’s unexpected shade of yellow that would surprisingly go with everything in your closet. See? It works.
