Style Goals for 2017

You may ask why I like to set style goals for myself. Why not just keep dressing like I do?

Because 13 year old Elizabeth. That’s why.

Sure I kept it classic with the black velvet and pearls. And how ’bout that bow? The bow that was made for the heads of two grown women, but instead I clipped it to my 13-year-old noggin already heavy with hair. Yeah! Such a Rock Star.

This girl, while the embodiment of style and grace #obvs, needs to be edited a bit (I’m looking straight at those “bangs”). Which is why I like to keep it fresh. And taking a step back to look at your style and setting goals for polishing it is a great way to do that.

So what does 2017 hold for how I express myself in clothing? I’m so glad you asked!

1. Realize the value of investment pieces.

I think it’s a right of passage in your 30’s to quickly loose the taste for the quick and cheap clothing you hoarded in your 20’s and to start craving quality.

While I will always consider myself Forever21 *wink, I’m starting to realize the value of a slightly more expensive piece of clothing that will be with me for years.

I plan to realize that more often this year and choose quality over quantity.

2. Refresh my accessories.

Speaking of Forever21, they called and want their jewelry section back (we all know that’s a lie as their jewelry is final sale, duh).

I happen to own a lot of their pieces, and I’m not saying it’s a bad thing. I bought a necklace the other day that looks identical to one you could find in J. Crew but was one tenth the price. I appreciate that.

However, I’ve owned and worn a lot of their pieces over and over and over again, and this year it’s time to refresh.

Goal: go through, clean out what I don’t want and start devoting some funds to things like new bracelets, better quality rings I can wear on the regular, and necklaces that will jazz up my basics.

3. Shop my closet.

During the month of December I purposefully shopped what I already owned, and it was fun!

I saved money, agony, and came to realize just how many great clothes I have. Plus, what is the saying, necessity is the mother of invention?

This year I’m going to be more inventive with what I already own.

Set some style goals for yourself! It will help streamline your shopping and keep your style focused on the message you want to portray.

Why Leopard Pants Can Look Good

One of my biggest dreams in life is to have a leopard as a pet. Wouldn’t that be great?

Not only do you get kick butt protection for your house, but you also have the fabulous print walking around to gaze at. And basically a cuddly kitty.

I would name him… *I’ve stopped to seriously consider this* Willy Nilly. And we’d call him Silly Willy Nilly for short.

Until that day comes and my little Shih Tzu signs off on it, I’ll just stick with leopard pants.

I can’t say if I’ll go for another patterned pant outside of leopard print. The best way to go for a trend like this is to do it in a print you absolutely can’t get enough of. *Refer to the top of this post to gauge my love of leopard.

You would think having a pattern would make your legs look larger, but by picking the right pattern it could actually work to your advantage.

Notice how the black part of the leopard creates a slight line down the front of the leg – that is a great visual trick that gives a long lean look.

Pair any patterned pants with simple pieces. A solid shirt, especially one that dips down a bit in the back, will help bring sophistication to the look. In an ensemble like this your pants are loud enough, don’t wear things that visually compete with them.

These pants are from The Limited in West Town Mall. And gosh, are they comfortable. I’m going to try and squeeze out some more looks from them just because they’re such a super comfy/stretchy option!

Here are some more great (and comfortable) pant options (PS: the sale is back on!)

Striped Skirt and Jean Jacket

This fuchsia color makes my mouth water.

In fact, a jewel tone paired with black and white stripes is everything I love visually about life.

This top gives me everything I need for this outfit once I tuck it in and add a jacket. It would probably be too much volume paired with the skirt on its own.

This is why a jean jacket (or any jacket, really) that you love is the greatest closet staple. As is a great patterned a-line skirt! If you follow me on Instagram, you can see how I styled the skirt in warmer weather.

After a busy weekend throwing a bridal shower for one of my bestestestest friends, I was glad to have pre-prepped this outfit for Sunday morning. (Which explains why there are no fall decorations on my porch – you just wait till I have time ;)

If you get the chance, putting an outfit together ahead of time is the way to go. I love to do it so that I can have time to mull over what accessories would work. That way I’m not throwing them on as I walk out the door.

But I understand, not everyone wants to stand in their closet and play dress up like I do. But that’s why you read TheSpiff! :-D

And while all of these pieces were gathered over time (some at deep discounts) I’ve put together a list of similar things so you can shop the same pieces if you’d like…

Fall 2016 Inspiration Board

fall fashion, fall 2016, knoxville blogger, knoxville fashion, knoxville fashion blogger, west town mall, elizabeth ogle

Truth? I wanted to fill this fall board with jackets and boooooots.

I also wanted to change my nail polish color to this deep red. So as you can image, this fall I’ll be a pile of boots, jackets and wine red.

So that we both don’t walk around looking like crazy people this fall, here’s a list of things to fill your wardrobe with. And hey, you can get all of these things at West Town Mall.

1. Wine Red Jacket – I will wear this over everything. Pick it up at White House Black Market.

2. Army Green Jacket – This over a white tee, jeans and some booties will potentially be my uniform in a couple months, thanks to Forever21.

3. Black Pleated Skirt – Oh how I love these skirts, Rue21. It’s so flattering because it carves out a waist and gives you a little swing in your step.

4. Chunky Layered Necklace – I’ve been craving one of these, and this one from Ann Taylor is both classic and current (but isn’t everything at Ann Taylor just that?)

5. Big Bag – I like big bags, I can’t lie. And it’s going to help me combine what I need from the diaper bag with what I need for everyday. And this color…well, that’s just good enough to EAT. Pick this one up at Dillard’s or Coach.

6. Tights – Um. Yeah. These from The Limited are what I plan to slip in from September till the last possible hint of winter is gone in April…or maybe May…Junish?

7. GAP Jeans – I don’t have a reason to buy more jeans, but the fact that these and a number of others are on sale at GAP for $12.99 means I’ll start coming up with reasons.

8. Plush Hoodie – American Eagle also has “sexy” in the name of this hoodie, which isn’t often used in the description of these. I’ll bite. Mainly because if I can look sexy and be comfortable? I’m in.

9. Over-the-Knee Boots – Charlotte Russe will have me popping in a lot if they keep these great over-the-knee boots in stock! I’ve been considering these tall boots for years, this is the year I go for it.

I hope this helps get you in the mood for fall! If not, I can email you a whole LIST OF REASONS. :)

Spiffy Mint + White

white jeans, summer outift, ootd, knoxville fashion blogger, summer lights, mom life, west town mall, elizabeth ogle

I love this outfit. I tried to think of a more creative way to intro this post, but that’s what I’ve got.

I don’t often repeat whole outfits. In fact, I most often go a full season without repeating an outfit once, but so far I’ve reached for this exact combination several times (while carefully avoiding the same crowd and any incriminating social media pics).

The light colors make it appropriate for the season, while the coverage it gives makes me less susceptible to bug bites and appearing bright white (as I’ve yet to do anything about a tan).

When the temps get too unbearable for pants, I can pair this shirt with a stretchy casual pencil skirt or wear the jeans with something sleeveless. It’s great to have a 3/4 length sleeve in a light material around for summer events that may be indoors where the AC is working over time (OR MY OFFICE, geeze people).

I got this shirt at The Loft Outlet, but here’s one that is similar, and here are the jeans and shoes (here’s how I tracked down the perfect white jeans).
