Packing for a Summer Getaway

Don’t let the text in this picture fool you. If you’re packing for any getaway, these pieces (which are now probably all on sale) will build the perfect vacay wardrobe…

what to pack

Whether you’re packing up for a quick jaunt to the beach, or scooting your lawn chair into the sun on your back patio, this week is a great time to shop for some fresh pieces. Good thing West Town Mall has such a great selection!

American Eagle bathing suit: The stripe placement on the bottoms will help your hips look narrow (yay!)

Gap shirt dress: Pick one up to wear over tights, with wedges, or let it pull double duty and wear it as a bathing suit coverup.

Garage t-shirt: Takes up very little room in your suitcase, and really comes in handy.

Forever21 beaded necklace, maxi dress and hat: I love love the coral color of this necklace. I can think of at least 5 ways to wear that dress (it’s less than $15), and that hat would really come in handy on days you don’t want to do your hair (so…everyday).

Dillard’s wedges and infinity scarf: These Lucky Brand wedges are by far THE MOST COMFORTABLE wedges I have ever put on my feet. Don’t go one step this spring without trying a pair. Seriously. And what’s better for cool nights then a light scarf with this adorable print? (“Nothing” is the correct answer).

The Limited “Love” necklace: Having a great long necklace is a great way to pack another accessory without taking up more room.

Bath and Body Works lip balm: Essential only if you plan on using your lips while on vacation.

J. Crew shorts: Cool, in every sense of the word.

Charlotte Russe cross body bag: I love this for the pattern, but also because you can tuck the chain in at night and use it as a clutch.

Sunglass Hut Tory Burch shades: Yes. Please.

Express sandals: Looks like comfort and versatility finally met and formed an adorable friendship in the form of this sandal.

Aeropostale sweater: If you don’t pack a light sweater, you’re going to think back to this blog and think how right I was to suggest it and how you really should have listened.

If you plan on getting all gussied up on vacation, pack this uh-mazing dress.

Flawless Radiance Brush

bronzer brush

bronzer brush

Boy, does Bare Minerals know how to name their brushes or what? Who can say no to “flawless radiance“? On top of that, I’m going to go ahead and skip to the even better part, it’s only $22.

Now that I’ve got your wallet and your face considering it, let me tell you why it’s so great…

I’ve always been a big advocate for buying good brushes. Because I truly believe a good makeup brush takes your look from “homemade” to “professional” faster than anything else. This is true with any brush you would use on your face, but most recently I learned just how true it is when it comes to a bronzer brush.

I’ve been practicing what I preach by having great eye shadow brushes for years now. But I was getting a failing grade in the bronzer and blush brush category. “Oh any old thing will do,” is what I thought to myself as I picked up my old foundation brush to wipe the bronzer all over my face. Then I would get frustrated with the bronzer for not looking right…and the cycle would continue.

Then I went to Bare Minerals one day to talk about their new foundation. The girl applied it and some bronzer on my face (the very same bronzer I’d been failing with) and it looked fantastic! The difference? The brush.

You can believe I bought up that brush then and there! Gal pals, it makes such a huge difference. I mean HUGE difference in how the bronzer looks on my face. I’m loving how it blends and even how the bristles feel on my skin – it’s become my favorite part of the makeup process for sure.

Don’t waste any more time being frustrated with bad bronzer – get a new brush!!

Pinterest Pick

I am so deeply in love with fall, the only time I’m not looking forward to the cooler weather and the leaves changing is when we’re in the middle of it.

So when I sign onto Pinterest looking for summer outfit inspiration, and all I come across are fall outfits with boots and scarves, it gets me even more excited…and then frustrated because it’s not fall and I still need summer outfit ideas.

That’s when I type “Summer Outfit Inspiration” aaand that’s when I get a whole slew of girls in outfits that no one in the real world could, or would want to — and even if they did it wouldn’t be appropriate — wear about.

Outfits like this one…

pinterest pick

Let’s break it down.

I like that she’s paired a statement necklace with a white button down. I think this is a great way to have easy style in the summer. You can pair this with a skirt, denim shorts, jeans, or even wear it over a maxi dress. It’s a classic style that’s made modern with a fresh statement necklace.

What I don’t like, is that it’s another one of those Pinterest pictures that are not for the average woman. Who wears a skirt that short? Why would one want to? How does she sit down? Those are all the questions that pop into my head when I see that much of her legs.

Something else that’s pretty unbelievable about this outfit, she’s making a fanny pack look sexy. Yeah, nice try Pinterest model, but we all know that in real life you look like such a dork (we hope), and that when you reach for your cash out of that thing that people are snickering behind you (please let that be the case). Because no one, NO ONE can make a fanny pack look that good.

But the white shirt and statement necklace, that does look good. So thanks for that.

Bring Your Pinterest Pins to Life

pinterest weekend outfit

I know. We’re twinsies!

While it’s hard to pin point the subtle differences between the two pictures, that is me there on the right. Ah yes, you see it now don’t you?

I honestly didn’t even plan to take this in front of a chalk board sign, it just worked out so serendipitously.

So why am I walking around impersonating Pinterest models? Because I want to give you four ways you can do what I did, and bring what you’ve pinned on Pinterest to real life. Put all of that dreaming, pinning and (let’s face it) pining to good use by learning how to put it into action when it comes to what you wear…

1. Search for items you’re having a hard time styling.

The vest I’m wearing in this picture is a moto-vest I got as a gift several years ago. I’ve never been able to work it properly into an outfit, until I saw this picture. And what do you know – it was the perfect thing to wear downtown for dinner and jazz. Pinterest has gotten really good with their search capabilities, so figure out what you need help with and search for it.

2. Don’t be so literal.

Obviously I’m not wearing exactly the same hoochie skirt outfit she is. That’s because you’ve really got to relax your brain when searching for outfit inspiration. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been stuck on what to wear, and by simply scrolling through pictures of clothing, it’s triggered an idea in my head that was no where to be found on the page. By looking at silhouettes and the overall “feeling” of an outfit, your brain can put things together that you’ve maybe never thought of before.

3. Know your closet.

If you don’t know what’s in there, how can you know what to wear? Take a quick pass through to look at what you’ve got, even if you’re not getting dressed. This way you’ll have a fresh mental image of what’s in there. If you have so many pieces that you can’t take a relatively quick pass through, then I suggest you unload a little.

Bonus Point: Have fun! Put something together and if you’re unsure, wear it out with your best friend and see what you think. Fashion should be fun, so try not to tress about it (she writes emphatically to herself).

This Weeks {Summer Favorite} Nails

accent nailTo continue on with the “summer favorites” idea, for the month of August I’m touring all my most loved summer nail colors.

Ikat accent nailThis week it’s Maybelline’s “Green with Envy”. As you can see, this polish and I have an  assorted history together. Obviously I like a little accent to go with my nails, and this color is perfect for that!

I am going “old school” this time and have painted all my nails the same color (remember when we used to do that? ;)

But it’s fun to look back on all the variations I’ve done with this Tiffany-esq blue.

Inside I’m craving some deep grays, blue, and purples, but I’m holding that at bay until September (at least) and am forcing myself to wring all the bright out of summer that I can.

What color will you show off this week?
