How to do Sparkles the Right Way

Getting ready to type a sentence about how much is going on this time of year, I got distracted thinking about how much I needed to get done today…ha.

My goal is to take as much guess work out of your holiday outfit and other beauty-related holiday things as I can. So that you don’t have tiny freak outs like I just did.
Here is the video from my segment this week talking about what to wear for holiday parties. I say “holiday” not because I’m trying to take the Christ out of Christmas, but because these could also work for New Years Eve as well, OK?! ;)

Not only do I include great pieces (thank you, Ann Taylor), but I also pass on my tips for sparkling the right way.

I’m going to go knock some things off my to-do list. YOU take less than five minutes to enjoy this segment…

Merry Christmas!

How to Dress for Christmas in November

Over the weekend, I got to start celebrating Christmas!

For that I just HAD to bust out the sparkles, of course. The question was how to you do sparkles for a daytime event without looking too fancy?

You add pink crop pants!

The pink brightens the whole look and the crop pant makes it a little less serious. Make sure when you’re doing sparkles in the day that you keep everything else low key. I went with matte black earrings and a simple black ring because the sweater is so sparkly.

I’m not the only one celebrating Christmas a little early. Santa has officially come into town! More specifically he’s come to West Town Mall!
The funnest thing about Santa being in town is getting to see little kids all dressed up for their pictures with him.
If you’re not totally sure what to dress your cuties in for their pictures, or if you’d just love to see some adorable children’s clothes from all over the mall, click here to read my latest Style Setter blog!
And feel free to add sparkles to your everyday outfits!

Ten Fingers Sparkling

One of my favorite things about this season is wishing people a, “Merry Christmas!” There’s no cheerier greeting to give in my book, and it always puts a smile on someones face!

This week, I said Merry Christmas in more than one way-ten ways to be exact, with my nails!

It was also my maiden voyage with Essie nail polish. I’ve been reading about and seeing this polish for so long I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to try it! It was a gift from a good friend of mine that sent me over the edge and sparked my Christmas nails!! :)

Essie “Leading Lady” is what you see here on all 8 fingers and it’s OPI’s “Leaf Him at the Alter” on my accent nails.

Oh what fun it is to have Christmas on your nails!

Now, if I can only decide what to do for the main event!

Ha, and I just realized that 90% of this post ends in an “!” so it must be that I’m really excited about Christmas (wait for it) !

Try saying “Merry Christmas” to every store clerk and friend you pass and watch as their face lights up and they look as if you’ve woken them out of a coma. It’s such a good thing to remind people of what time of year it is, and to pass on the hope that it will be a merry one!

Then say it with your nails! (Not in their face or anything violent, maybe just subtly give them a backwards wave ;)

Merry Christmas Everybody!!!!

Go for the Gold

So….you remember when I said I like to pack in all the sparkles I can on my nails this year?

Yeah, that’s starting to become a daunting task.
Why?
Because there are so many options!!

It’s like I’ve said about this nail art trend before, it’s great I love it, nothing makes me happier then to be able to be even more creative; however, it opens the door so wide to possibilities, sometimes too many try to squeeze through the doorway and they can’t fit.

What I did this week was by all current interpretations of nails-pretty simple. But I’m loving it so much I will definitely look for reasons to sport it after Christmas.

Ok, so let’s skip the whole “OMG Maybelline’s Color Show” nail colors are so great, I’d have their little nail baby if I could” speech. You know what I think about them by now.

What I started with was their “Bold Gold”. It’s such a great metallic color and their polishes provide such great coverage, I could have stopped there and been happy.

But I didn’t (of course) over top of that I added Sephora’s version of OPI’s “Only Gold for Me” glitter top coat.

I only sparsely added that though, so it looks like I have a smattering of little gold polka dots all over my nails. At the right angle you catch a glimpse of the perfect little glint of light.

When the glitter to polish ratio is low in a bottle like this (and most of the time that’s the case with bigger glitter) it’s easier to just do it over a color that matches the glitter. If you try to cover your nails in this kind of glitter, it would take a whole lot of coats.

Doing it this way adds the perfect holiday pizzazz to anything I touch.

A Warm Glowing Glire

Never underestimate the power of subtle glitter.

Sparkling can easily become an addiction. I know, I’ve fallen prey to it myself.

You catch a glimpse of your shirt or dress in a mirror and see how it’s all shimmering and you think to yourself, “Why would I ever NOT sparkle?” Pretty soon you’re setting everything on glitter-fire (also known as “glire” or “aglaze”).

To keep from falling into this trap, learn to recognize the value of subtle glitter.

A shirt collar, for example, is the perfect little spot to add some pizazz.
Or even just a pair of sparkly earrings, or a cool tuxedo trouser with sparkles down the sides. Little details like that by themselves make for an intriguing outfit, sometimes even more attractive than an entire shirt glittering in your eye.

When you go out this week, look for little ways to sparkle instead of big “SEE ME HERE!” kind of tops.

The other advantage to these kinds of things is they can be worn throughout the year. Most of the time my full on sparkle tops don’t see the light of day until it’s December, but the tops I have with subtle glitter get attention at special occasions no matter what time of year it is.

Proving, sometimes less is definitely more.

Next time you go out for a party, ask yourself, “Am I giving Christmas trees everywhere a reason to be jealous?”
If the answer is no, you’ve dressed yourself well :)

Merry Christmas!
