What to Wear When Going Out This Weekend

Weekends seem to fill up fast these days, which translates into a lot of outfit planning.

If your March is anywhere near as booked as mine, let me help alleviate some of the outfit planning pressure and give you an idea of what to wear to say… a great evening eating sushi with friends (insert whatever night time activity you’re planning for the weekend here).

A couple weekends ago I got to eat fabulous sushi with fabulous friends, so I knew right off that what I wore would have to be equal parts casual and cool.

This time of year I’ll take any excuse to get into my white blazer, so I thought to balance out it’s crisp whiteness I would add all black. Nothing but black. Blackity black darkness.

I did this in the form of black skinnies, a black shirt, and black boots. All black everything.

What this did was create a simple silhouette that was casual and cool all the while letting my white blazer take the spotlight. When adding a fancier piece like this blazer, it’s good to keep everything else low key. Especially when you’re going out with a crowd to a restaurant that can go either way (and sushi restaurants can definitely go either casual or dressy).

You never know what everyone else is going to be wearing so you want to maintain that balance of dressy and casual.

I love the little embellishments on these jeans. There’s some on the butt too *ah-wink.

I added this cool metallic statement necklace because there was that big empty space right there that needed something.

But besides a watch, that’s all the jewelry I went with. The final touch was one of my favorite clutches. Black and white snake skin with a brass knuckle handle. Since it was an edgy outfit, why not carry an edgy purse that can also double as self defense tool when walking back to my car which was a ways away from the restaurant.

From the Runway to Your Everyday

Sometimes New York Fashion Week can seem as relatable as Lady Gaga.

But there are ways to look past all the glitz and wild glamour and maybe get some everyday inspiration. If you’re not up for doing that, I’m so glad because I’ve done it for you.

Check out my latest Style Setter blog for 3 simple and totally relatable trends that were showcased during Fashion Week.

Then get yourself out there and do some shopping! :)

What to Wear for Date Night

My apologies for the picture quality! Someone didn’t turn on the flash :)

For Valentine’s Day my husband and I have always enjoyed a quiet dinner at home the night of, then a dinner out another night once the crowds have died down. (Like a giddy newlywed, I still get excited over the fact that we don’t have to part ways at the end of the night).

Dinner out this year was to a pretty fancy place (which to me requires nice attire, but not so nice that it looks like I never get out). I knew right way I didn’t want to wear my skinny jeans because the plan was to full on stuff myself.

So I went with tights (my stretchy ones), a tunic and my favorite waterfall leather jacket. I cannot get enough of the cascading shape of this jacket. I would have a whole closet of them if it were financially sound.

At the last second I decided to add my long gold tassel necklace for a little glitter, and the gold Guess clutch I picked up at the church garage sale for $1 (thank you, whoever didn’t want it anymore).

I just wanted to show that a date night outfit doesn’t have to be fussy or overtly sexy. I sometimes put weird pressure on myself to put on everything the husband’s ever complimented and somehow make it all work into this glorious outfit that he loves.
But I’ve come to realize a few things… One: that’s just not feasible. Two: he probably wouldn’t notice. Three: he’d much rather have me happy and out the door in a reasonable amount of time.
Plus the man sees me in every state possible (all beautiful of course) so he knows exactly what he’s getting ;)
The point? Relax, put together something that will make you feel confident and good, then enjoy the night!

The one Question you Haven’t Asked Yourself

This week I’ve opened the door to my brain to give you a peak inside the process through which I run all outfits.

These are questions I ask myself in order to produce the perfect outfit (see days one and two if you missed them).

If you’re looking to be styled better this summer, these are sure fire ways to get yourself dressed in the best possible outfits that will help you be you more comfortably!

how to dress well
A little neon, a lot of neutral classics

So let’s get to it.

Who’s Your Audience?
Thinking about who it is you’re going to be around is very important in determining what to wear.

The majority of my week this week is going to be spent with a group of business people. This rules out any kitschy graphic T’s like my “Vandalay Industries” or “This Girl’s a Genius”, along with anything that looks like it came fresh out of the juniors section.

I’ll throw in a trendy piece here and there, but I’m always sure to balance it with something classic. Like a wearing a black blazer with my neon yellow top. That way I can slip in a little bit of what I’m loving at this moment without looking too young.

It all goes back to balance.

The Bible even backs me up on this. Paul writes in I Corinthians 9:22, “I have become all things to all people…” In clothes, this translates to dressing for your audience.

Even if your audience is just you. On days I know I’m going to be home writing for hours, I still get dressed to make myself feel put together. But those clothes I wear when I’m writing alone are not the one’s I would wear to church, or even to a family gathering.

Whether you dress for it or not, we’re in front of an audience everyday. The question is, how do they see us?

Will There be Dancing?

Welcome to day 2 of: How to Plan Outfits!

The second question I ask myself (find out the first one here) is:
What will I be physically doing in this outfit?

I know that may sound weird, but before you go thinking I’m a freak, remember these two things:
1. I don’t actually phrase the question like that in my head.
2. I rarely show up to an event uncomfortable with what I have on. I think about everything in the planning phase so I can wear things that will help me be comfortably-me with the utmost confidence.

Forever21 $17.80!

If I’m sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner, for example, I will not plan to wear the jeans I just bought that I’m having to break in. I’ll go with a more forgiving waistline.

Will I be sitting down? Will I be bending over? If there’s a lot of getting things off the floor (like at a work event where I might have to reach for things from under tables), then short skirts are out. If there’s a lot of running around-bye bye heels!

This dress to the left, for example, would be good for eating and standing. But doing the limbo? Pretty much out of the question.

Think of what you’ll be physically doing so that you won’t have to be tugging on things while you go.

This sounds like a long process, but really it takes less than a minute to think about what your event will entail. And it helps you because it narrows down your options.

What’s tomorrow’s question going to be?! You’ll have to click back over to find out! :)
