Pinterest Pick

Like a lot of women, I’ve had to come to terms with Pinterest.

No, my closet is not organized with boxes I pulled from the trash and spay painted gold. No, there aren’t crafts all over my house emblazoned with our initials. No, my cheeseburgers do not turn out looking like that. Thank you very much, though, for pointing it and all my other visual faults out, Pinterest.

Minus the sarcasm, I do appreciate Pinterest for outfit inspiration. So every once in a while, I’d like to share my Pinterest Pic’s (or picks! …word play!) with you and talk about why it works.

My latest pick is this gorgeous dress and styling pinned from this blog.

simple summer styling

I’m sure we can all agree, she looks fabulous. But look closely, and you see that she’s styled very simply.

She’s not wearing any earrings (not even studs), no necklace or rings that we can see. She’s simply rocking this look with a watch and a cuff, and some very simple/neutral makeup. The dress is bold with its color blocking, but she makes the whole look unique by pairing it with this orange clutch. I can bet her hair is dirty and that’s why she threw it in this simple side pony, but with the two wisps of hair playing at her face, it gives it the perfect tousled look.

I wish we could see her shoes.

I can imagine they’re simple black strap sandals with just a hint of gold embellishment near the toes. This is truly a lesson in less is more, especially in the hotter months. Summer is the time to let yourself shine and to comfortably be you as we get to hang about outside. Who knows, maybe she forgot about the event and threw all of this together as she screamed instructions to the babysitter. Whatever her motives, she looks great and if we similarly pair our look down, I think we all can too.

My Favorite Concealer

If ever you are presented with the desert island-what’s the one thing you would take-conundrum, let me provide you with an answer…MAC’s Pro Longwear Concealer.

It masks everything from imperfections to dark circles in the smoothest way possible.

It makes your skin feel unbelievably soft. Plus it doesn’t settle into fine lines and provides the perfect base for your foundation to lay.

I bought it a while back, but stopped using it so I had this gem of a product just taking up space in my makeup drawer.  Then I heard from a former MAC makeup artist (who had tried every other concealer under the sun) how great this stuff was, so I decided to give it another chance.

You may be alarmed when you first pump it on your finger – there seems to be a sizable amount that comes out. But don’t worry, it ends up being just right.

Put it all around your eyes (even the corners) and at the outer corners of your nose (where it meets your face) to prevent the redness that pops up sometimes at the end of the day.

Also note, the pump is the one to use for under your eyes. The one with the wand is for spot treatment.

You’re going to have to give it a try. It’s $20 but it will last you a long time, and it will make your foundation (or BB cream) work that much better.

See you tomorrow!

Pumpkin Face

Happy October Everyone!!!

It’s truly the most wonderful time of the year. Why?
Because well, it’s Fall!!! And I love this month for many many reasons, but one is because we’re on the cusp of all the holidays and fun time! Love. It.

Speaking of holidays and fun time, I realized we haven’t had a theme week here on The Spiff in a while so this week is going to be all about how to do your makeup for pictures. Specifically outdoor pictures.

But don’t be deterred, if you don’t plan on getting photographed outdoors for a while these are still helpful tips for looking natural with your makeup in any scenario.
So check back in all week for more tips!

To start the week, the month, and these tips off let’s begin at the foundation…

Apply your foundation in natural light. It’s always a good idea to check your foundation in natural light because that’s the most telling light of all.

You don’t want to end up with pumpkin face-foundation that’s obviously not the right shade for your face, and shows a crease right at your jaw line. NOOO!!! (Don’t let that picture be you! ;)

I completely changed foundation last year because I noticed that outside it wasn’t matching the rest of me (gah! That’s the worst feeling in the world!) I searched and searched until I found precisely the right shade for me that looked super natural (ha! Not in a ghostly way, more of a uber way) outside.

Once you have that perfectly fitting foundation, apply it in natural light if you’re going to be photographed outside because it will prevent you from caking it on.

Even if the foundation matches your face, caking it on can still change that. And I know how it can be when you’re getting ready for pictures or any kind of camera experience, you feel like you have to add an inch to your face. Well you don’t!

Go slow and remember, applying makeup is like cooking…you can always add more, but it’s a big impossible mess if you try to subtract.

Happy Happy October everyone!!!! Yay!!!!!
