Throwing the Blouse Out with the Bath Water

On of my favorite quotes from Gilmore Girls (and there are many) is when Rory is trying to get Loralie to go through her clothes and give things away. She says,
“Go through your closet and pick out anything you wouldn’t want to be caught wearing in a car accident and give it away.”

If you have done this and have somehow rationalized in your brain that the smiley face t-shirt from 1996 will come back into style then I have prepared a checklist.
Pick an article of clothing and go through the following, IF you answer no to two or more…Chuck it!

1. When I try this on and look in the mirror, am I immediately pleased?
2. Does it fit as well as the newest shirt/skirt/pants I’ve purchased?
3. Can I think of three outfits to wear it with?
4. Is it something I would look at and want to buy if I saw it in the store?
5. If I keep this, will I wear it within a week from today?

If you’re still feeling iffy wear it out one day to the grocery store or somewhere and see how you feel in it. A lot of times it’s easy to make clothing decisions in our bedroom, but it’s out in public that’s the true test. If you wear it out and feel good then keep it, if you wear it out and have small children run from you in terror then you might want to consider chucking it. Either way it will be a good test.

PS Take your time with question 3 and consider the item with as many other items in your closet as possible because it may bring another outfit together.

And remember, giving clothes away to someone who needs them is sowing a good seed for more clothes!!!
