Watch How Accessories Change this Dress

If you think accessories are a frivolous thing that don’t matter to your outfit, you are mistaken.

To prove just how important they are, watch my segment from this week to see how a simple change in accessories can alter the look of this simple (yet very on trend and cute) navy dress from Charming Charlie in West Town Mall.

Here is the third look I wasn’t able to get to in the show…

It’s more of a classic look with simple gold accessories paired with heels and a clutch that flow with touches of gold hardware.

You Need to Master This Trend

It’s for your own good.

Putting your own spin on the Athleisure trend, will save you time when getting dressed to run simple errands, make you look good while you’re out and about, and keep you comfortable when running after little people.

If we could just get calories to not count when wearing it, we’d be living in heaven and I would be eating a lot of doughnuts and bagels. And pizza. And macaroni and cheese. Now I want a doughnut.

I’ve gathered some more examples for you. Just to reiterate that the trend is mostly a mix of casual and athletic pieces. I’m surprised they didn’t go with “Cathletic” or “Leisletic”. #noimnot

In this first example (source), girl is wearing a hoodie and tennies. But look how a few elevated pieces can bring it into more of a sophisticated look and less like you’ve spend your life on the couch.

I love the sweater this next girl has on. LOVE. IT.

But all it is is black pants (which, in this instance you can getaway with tights because the sweater is covering her bum – but ONLY because it’s covering her bum) and a black shirt!

Simple. Classy. Comfortable. (Words often used to describe me in high school ;)

The look comes from a pretty neat website called SexyModest Boutique. Check it out!

Finally, this is a look I came across on Pinterest. Within seconds of seeing it, I had an outfit worked out in my head that I could put together with things I already owned. Which is the funnest epiphany of them all!

Notice that she’s worked in work out pants – proving what I’ve been saying all  week…it’s a mix!

One Piece Four Ways (Part 2)

These two looks with the vest, are my favorite (shhh, don’t tell the looks from the other day).

I absolutely love Piko tops, so to be able to wear it a little differently layered under this vest makes me happy. It especially makes me happy Monday morning getting ready for work when I want to stay in bed in my pj’s. This Piko look is one giant plate of waffles and TV remote away from that kind of comfort.

On the show this week I gave some tips on how to really have an efficient closet. Efficient both money-wise and getting-out-the-door-wise (which isn’t a grammatical thing, but you get it).

Watch the quick segment to see how to best shop for great deals and get good use out of what you own!

For the first several months of my marriage, I had to keep explaining I wasn’t going out and partying at night.

Around 10pm, while my husband would be watching TV in bed, I would be changing out of my pajama’s and into a sparkly top and jeans, or a skirt, tights and a blazer. After several bewildered looks from both him and the dog, I explained I was prepping outfits for the coming week.

I learned a long time ago that deciding what to wear minutes before I’m supposed to leave, is not how I best operate. At least not on a regular basis. And especially now that I’m a mom and have another human being to get out the door.

Having that quiet time to just try on clothes and be creative is how I walk out the door, fully confident and in love with everything I’m wearing.

It’s also how I’m able to get the most use out of what’s in my closet. Like this sweater vest! Here I’ve created two completely different outfits out of the same piece. It’s a cozy piece that’s perfect for this wish-washy weather we’re having.

With a great black and white pattern, it livens up my neutrals/solid colors and can obviously go form comfy to business causal with a few tweaks.

(I’ve got two more (totally different) outfits with this vest coming at you tomorrow, too!)

This plays into that post I did about tweaking your brand. In order to polish your style this year, you’ve got to give your looks a little bit of time.

And I understand, not everyone pees a little bit from excitement when it comes to creating outfits. That’s not something I do at all, for sure. Without question, not me uh uh, no no. Weeeird.

Anytime you’ve got about 20 minutes on your hands, get in your closet and play around. No pressure. No judgement. Just try stuff on!

And don’t feel like you should do it every week. Think about the next event you have coming up. Maybe a baby shower, or a dinner out with friends. Try it with that! Sure, it takes 20 minutes now, but the day of the event, it will save you even more time than that. And you get to choose something while you’re totally relaxed and without the pressure of time. You might even enjoy it.

Until then, follow me on Pinterest and Instagram for more outfit ideas, and gorgeous pictures by Sarah Moser!

Coming up this week…more outfits with the vest and money saving tips to help you have great style and a FULL bank account!

Here are other vests like the one I’m wearing (which came from Target).

Earlier this year I lived gloriously close to the mall.

I used to say that most people like to live near a great view of the mountains, while I was perfectly content living within the glow of the Belk sign. And it’s true.

Now that I can’t consider the mall an extension of my closet, I’ve been popping into Target more often for when I neeeeed something new to wear. I picked up this dress on super clearance.

I’ve done that a couple times with dresses at Target – which completely breaks my rule about not buying something just because it’s cheap. But in this case it worked out beautifully because I saw the potential and how it could follow me well into winter.

It’s comfortable, pairs perfectly with tights and is a nice pattern that’s not stripes or full on flannel.

Plus I’m excited about layering it under some really cozy sweaters and switching up the necklaces later on.

That’s one thing I love about the cooler temps. Tights and a cozy open cardigan can really help you get extra use out of those late summer/fall pieces. As long as it doesn’t include light fabrics or colors, you can totally work it well into winter.

Here’s a very similar version from JCP for under $30!

Here are some ways I plan to style this dress and others this fall/winter.
