Goals and a Style Plan Made Interesting, I Promise

So I’m going to ask a potentially uncomfortable question…where are you at with your goals for the year?

I’ll share an update with my goals so it may make you feel better… Back in January I talked about doing a style refresh, which included some of my goals for the year.

For example, the one goal of mine was to make social media time productive. While I have done that in some ways (planned Jackson’s nursery…ok I’ve done it in one way), I haven’t really limited my mindless scrolling time. I don’t know why our brains suddenly depend on a social media break, when just 6 years ago they barely knew what it meant. Regardless, I can be better at stopping myself from grabbing my phone every 30 minutes to see information that does me absolutely no good.

The goal I have done well with, is being careful how I shop. The goal of not buying something just because it was on sale has really prevented me from buying things I’m really not going to wear. I don’t want to fill my closet up with junk pieces.

A new goal I’ve added to the list, is coming up with a maternity style plan. Funny thing about me…10 years ago I was not a planner. At. All. Then I met my husband. He plans his path through Wal-Mart. So in the 6 1/2 years we’ve been married, a lot of that planning has rubbed off on me. It’s mostly shown up in planning what I wear.

After showing up late to a lot of functions because I was frustrated with finding something to wear, I realized planning an outfit in advance would really help me feel better and look better (which is always the goal). I now religiously plan what I’m wearing. Saturday, my husband and I are going to run errands, I already know what I’m wearing. It’s not uncommon for my Sunday morning outfits to be planned out weeks in advance.

That’s why I came up with a maternity plan, because what I REALLY want to avoid is frustration over that baby bump.

Above is my idea board.

I’m going to shop for deals, but I do plan to replace each pair of jeans I currently wear with their maternity version. That way I won’t miss a beat with my pants.

Maxi dresses are going to really come in handy because I’ll be able to wear those before and after (plus I can wear them 100 different ways). And blazers, well I’ll be stocking up on these for the rest of my life pregnant or not.

And statement necklaces are something I’m really going to load up on so that I can get away with repeating the same basics but still add my own flare.

You should try this. Start formulating a plan for what you want to wear this spring/summer. It will really focus your shopping time and help you put outfits together with greater ease.

Similar necklace; swacket; skirt; shoes; undershirt came from here (believe it or not).

My favorite purchase of this fall/winter has hands down been this sweater (or jacket…maybe swacket?).

I actually took it right off the back of an unsuspecting mannequin, and I’m so glad I did (she had it coming).  I love having one cool go-to piece that I can grab and consistently feel good in throughout the colder months. It’s especially nice when I’m stuck trying to figure out what to wear – I just grab this and style it differently.

This time I changed things up by buttoning it up. It works especially well with this voluminous skirt and really helps showcase this gorgeous statement necklace my Aunt Kathleen got me for my birthday this past year.

Think about any swackets you’ve got, could you get more mileage out of them by wearing them buttoned?

Maybe now that you’ve learned the word “swacket” you’re confused as to what the proper pronunciation would be, AND need help styling it differently. Well I’ve got good news!

I’m teaming up with The Limited in West Town Mall for a style event on Saturday, February 28th. So from 12-2:30pm I’ll be in the store answering questions, offering advice and helping you look and feel your best!

Come see all the great items they have to offer and bring in a sweater or jacket that you’ve had a hard time styling – we’ll even work on how to say “swacket” while you’re there. None of the cool kids are saying it! ;)

Shopping My Closet

Black, White & Leather

As much as I love shopping a good sale, I also seriously cherish the feeling of being completely satisfied with what’s in my closet.

And I promise you, if you’ll make goals for your wardrobe this year and follow them when you shop, it will produce a well-balanced closet that will have you leaving as a happy customer every day.

Here are the deets for yesterday’s #ootd…

Piko Top: I’ve already started making good on my promise to buy multiples of an item when I really like it. And boy do I really like these Piko tops. They’re super comfortable, hang just right and provide the perfect backdrop for scarves or statement necklaces. The craziest thing about them? The fabric is 98% bamboo. Which has me looking for space in my yard to plant a couple dozen bamboo trees. Until that time, you can find them here and sometimes at Fiore in West Town Mall.

Statement Necklace: I am in love with the shape of this necklace. I picked this one up on super sale at Forever21. I don’t care how old you are, you need to go in there and check out their jewelry. Easy and cheap pieces like this can really make an outfit, especially if you’re wanting to get in on a trend but still dress your age. I can’t think of a better way to do that than with a $10 necklace (here’s one that’s comparable).

Leather Pants: I’ve wanted a pair of leather pants for a number of years. I held off buying them because I wanted to find the right pair that would fit well, not look too cheap and not require me to take out a loan. I hit the jackpot with this pair by Michael Kors, but here’s a cheaper version that looks just as good. Wear them as pants or leggings to add really cool texture to any outfit.

Patterned Heels: Well, I’ve already given you some good ideas here.
