Denim Jackets that Flatter Your Frame

Delicious denim delights.

The best, most wearable things in your closet are pieces that you feel good in. Also, clothes cover your nakedness. #ObviousStatements

But you know why you feel good in certain items over others? Because more than likely they compliment your shape. Whether you consciously bought it for that purpose, those are the things that will go on repeat giving you the most bang for your buck.

So when it comes to buying something that can be an investment piece – like a jean jacket – it’s important you go into it knowing what elements will compliment your body type and what won’t.

To help with that, I’ve put together a guide for you to reference. Hopefully below you will find your shape and use the tips to get yourself THE perfect jacket (denim or otherwise) this fall*…

Are you petite? Look for short, cropped, fitted styles. The key to dressing for this body type is to not overwhelm your frame. Anything long or bulky is going to make your legs look stumpy (it’s a terrible word, I know, but I’m trying to scare you away from the wrong kind of jacket). Less bulk equals a no-fuss denim jacket without extra pockets, extra lines, extra closures. Go for something that hits right above your waist with clean lines. Here’s a great version!

Looking to hide a tummy? You want to find a jacket that’s long – even going down to your booty butt (toddler speak for bum). Always keep the jacket open and look for one for elongating lines – this one is PERFECT; oh and here’s a dark gray version; also a dark denim one.

Want to appear more…ahem…”well endowed”? Look for a jacket that curves in at the waist giving you more volume up top. And POCKETS. They’re not just great for hiding candy – they make your girlfriends look bigger. Oh. Yeah. Here’s a great option!

Wish to minimize broad shoulders? Do so with a soft, unstructured jacket. The flowier the better as it helps to balance out your frame and draw attention away from your upper half. Think these kinds of jean jackets don’t exist? Think again. And again.

Are you in the business of adding curves to your pencil-like frame? Jackets are the perfect fix – especially fitted, nipped and pocketed jackets because they’re going to give you a waist, some girlfriends and overall curves. Here’s a moto version; here’s a cute peplum style.

Need to downplay your “girlfriends”? Go with as little bulk as possible. This translates to a small lapel, clean lines and little to no pocket-age going on. This is a great example, and gosh would this thing be versatile. Also this because the pockets are small, as is the collar.

I hope these tips help! If you have more questions, or would like more suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below!

Where to Score Deals in West Town Mall

new york and company, west town mall, leopard jacket, style help, how to style a leopard jacket, addidas, hollister jeans, knoxville style, knoxville style blogger, elizabeth ogle, how to find deals, how to shop smart

No, this isn’t click bait.

You have to laugh at the absurd wording those articles use that try to get you to click on them. Wording such as…”If you’re paying full price for J Crew YOU ARE BURNING YOUR MONEY IN A BONFIRE OF DOOM.” Thanks for the tip, guys, but I think I’ll be all right.

Don’t worry, you get none of that judgement here on the Spiff. Just good ole’ fashion deal advice (from stores you may not have thought about going into).

Like how Hollister runs their jeans on sale for $25 pretty often. That’s how I got these jeans I’m wearing in the picture. And let me tell you, Hollister is not looking for mom’s in their 30’s. Their marketing doesn’t point anywhere near that age range, but you put jeans and $25 in the same sentence and you’ve got this mom in her 30’s in your store. Plus these jeans are great.

Second place to score good deals (that you may not have ventured into in a while) is New York & Co. I go in there often because they are ALWAYS running a good sale. Their jewelry especially is a good deal.

Wandering in there the other day scored me this jacket for ten dollars! And while I definitely don’t condone buying things just because they’re on sale, I knew this patterned jacket would jazz up a lot of my neutral tops and fit into my style goal of taking my athliesure looks up a notch.

(New York & Co. is also a great place to get things if you’ve got long legs, FYI. They have lots of great pants options for tall girls who like to wear heals – and we all said, Praise God!)

The fun in popping in stores that are out of your normal routine, is you never know what you’re going to find or what kind of deal you’re going to score. Don’t let your age, style or the fact that you’re not a college student any more stop you from finding great things to wear at really fantastic prices.

Because if you’re paying full price for anything any where, you’re practically TORCHING YOUR CAR AND ALL THAT IS PRECIOUS TO YOU. ;) jk.

Similar necklace; swacket; skirt; shoes; undershirt came from here (believe it or not).

My favorite purchase of this fall/winter has hands down been this sweater (or jacket…maybe swacket?).

I actually took it right off the back of an unsuspecting mannequin, and I’m so glad I did (she had it coming). I love having one cool go-to piece that I can grab and consistently feel good in throughout the colder months. It’s especially nice when I’m stuck trying to figure out what to wear – I just grab this and style it differently.

This time I changed things up by buttoning it up. It works especially well with this voluminous skirt and really helps showcase this gorgeous statement necklace my Aunt Kathleen got me for my birthday this past year.

Think about any swackets you’ve got, could you get more mileage out of them by wearing them buttoned?

Maybe now that you’ve learned the word “swacket” you’re confused as to what the proper pronunciation would be, AND need help styli

The Puffy Jacket

My little nephew came into the world over the weekend, so we’ve been a little busy around here (Jackson has been picking out toys to share and bugs for him to touch ;) Meanwhile, please enjoy this post from last fall…

Puffy has a bad rap. You never really hear it in a positive sense…”You look puffy today” No.

How about, “There’s not enough puff!” Never heard it.

Even “the puffy shirt” was a bad thing.

Let’s give puff its dignity back by applying it to a jacket (but just between you and me, we’re going to try and keep the puff to a minimum). I was searching for a good puffy jacket last month because they’re so warm, and it’s the perfect kind of jacket to wear with everyday clothes. It’s not too dressy, not too casual.

The options right now are pretty vast, so you definitely want to go into the search with some criteria. Mine was as follows…

1. It couldn’t make me look too puffy (case and point).

2. I didn’t want it to cover my bum (I’m all about that bass).

3. I didn’t want to look like I came from the future and/or was getting ready to travel into space.

I did a little internet shopping before hitting the actual store, and found that Dillard’s had the best selection of coats that fit my requirements.
That’s always something I enjoy doing since clicking around to stores uses up zero gas and very little energy. It’s a great way to narrow down the field.

Dillard’s seemed to have a lot of options that fit my requirements so I headed over there.

The jacket I’m wearing is made by Columbia. Look how the “puffies” get slimmer right at my waistline…that’s a great touch and makes the jacket seem less bulky overall. The great thing about Dillard’s is even though they didn’t have my size that day, I was able to order it through them and get free shipping directly to my house. That’s awesome.

This coat is SUPER warm (it’s got down feathers in it) and not too puffy plus it’s water proof. To see more of what Dillard’s has to offer click here. For a different price range of puffy jackets click here.

The Perfect Denim Jacket for Your Body Type

If your closet was a pantry, a denim jacket would be the all-purpose flour.

Useful in so many ways and often used to tone things down.

Throw one on over sun dresses and little slinky tops to make them more office appropriate. Wear it with white pants or black pants. Make a fancier dress more casual, or give shape to your shapeless pieces.

And it’s not just perfect for spring and summer. A good denim jacket will be with you through fall, so it’s a really good investment. I’ll go as far to say it’s a classic.

Which is why it’s so important to choose one that’s going to flatter your body type and make you look magically delicious. To help, I’ve put together this guide to show you which ones will work for your frame…
denim jacket, tommy hilfiger jacket, denim jacket for petite, denim jackets for all body types, how to dress for your body types, jcpenney, how to find the right denim jacket, west town mall, fashion blog, how to dress for your body type

1. Hide your hips with this longer denim jacket from Dillard’s. It hits a little below where the hips start which helps to visually balance them out.

2. Give a straight figure more curves with a darker Tommy Hilfiger jacket. The larger pockets add bulk in the right places, and it tapers in the back in giving a curve-less figure some va-va-voom!

3. For petites, JCPenney gets it right. This jacket helps petite frames in that it hits right at the waist/top of hips, and the vertical lines helps create the illusion of length. Also, make sure the sleeves are rolled up so the jacket doesn’t overwhelm your frame.

4. If you’re rounder in the middle, this darker denim blazer from Zappos  is the answer. The darts helps it taper in which defines a waist line for a rounder figure and the open collar with the blazer structure opens up the jacket and creates a great skinny line right down your middle.
