Leave your worries, cares and most of your clothes at home this spring break (but still look good).

Clothing decisions for a town that’s hours away in a climate that could be drastically different from your home is hard. And the urge to pack everything “just in case” is strong. However, you HAVE to limit your stuff and no, your husband didn’t call me and ask me to say that.

The key is to consider each piece that you pack and realize it’s potential!

Watch as I’m able to take a few pieces from Altar’d State and turn them into multiple outfits. Oh and check out these cute bags!!!!

Spiffy Travel Tips

You’ll thank me later.

Some of these tips are going to be unpopular. They’re not (per say) what I would post boldly on Pinterest by themselves. Especially to the “Can’t Adult Today” crowd. However, I promise if you follow through with them, you’ll have a much easier time transitioning back into everyday life and enjoying your trip overall.

Are you grimacing yet? Well, just hold onto your latte…

Spiffy Travel Tip #1: Clean before you leave.

As a child, I used to get so frustrated with my mom who would basically be vacuuming the floor as we walked out the door. TURNS OUT I’m doing the same thing. And I absolutely love myself for it. So every time we go on a trip – even if it’s overnight – I clean. The bathrooms, the floors, straighten up all the rooms, make the beds, vacuum – the whole 9 yards.

I do this for a couple of reasons… First and foremost it’s 110% nicer to come home to a clean house. And since you’re already bringing in a mess of unpacking, it’s just nicer to do all of that in a clean environment. Secondly (and thankfully this has never happened) but in the event that people need to get in your house to do something, it’s clean! So you have peace of mind there.

Yes, it adds a lot to your to do list before leaving, BUT if you’ll pack first then clean it gives you time to mull over what you’ve packed to make sure you’re not forgetting anything. I’ve been doing this for 10 years now and it really helps the entire trip.

Spiffy Travel Tip #2: Save what you can for the road.

I used to try to do my nails before we left for a trip which means my to do list (for about a 12 hour window looked like this…) Pack myself, my husband and our child, clean the entire house, do my nails, write and schedule blog posts for the amount of time that we’re gone.

As you can imagine, I was overwhelmed with things to do and was often up waaaay into the night (often barely going to bed before it was time to leave).

I’ve since learned to schedule things (and my husband says, THANK GOD).

The longest part of the packing process is figuring out the clothes I’m going to take for everyone, so I do that way, way, way in advance. Oftentimes I start building my vacation wardrobe 2 months out. I write it down so that when it comes time to physically pack, I’m not starting from scratch and have really thought through everything I need.

The other thing I look at is what can I save for the drive? Blogs and nails can be done during our drive, so that takes two big time consuming things off my plate!

In the end, writing it all down helps and just like with any big project, tackle one thing at a time.

Spiffy Travel Tip #3: Unpack immediately.

I know, I KNOW you’re gritting your teeth right now. But LISTEN, you’ve just been sitting for a long period of time so move around and get it done STAT. Again, you will love yourself for it. Chances are you’ll need items from your bags within the next 24 hours so get ahead and get it out of the way. Even if it means creating a human size pile of wash – get it out of the bags and put the bags away.

Here’s what I do – unpack the smallest bag first. That way I feel accomplished and build momentum from there – next thing I know we’re all unpacked.

Also, don’t be that episode of Everybody Loves Ramon when they leave the suitcase in the staircase for months. Get it done. You’ll love yourself for it (sounds like a theme, doesn’t it?)

Make packing/unpacking even MORE fun with these Spiffy travel bags and come back later in the week for efficient outfit pieces to help you travel looking spiffy!

Packing Nightmares and how to Avoid Them

packing tips, how to pack, how to pack and still have style, packing tips for women, packing tips, packing light, how to pack light, how to pack smart, knoxville blogger, mom blogger, mom packing tips

Want to know my reoccurring nightmare? I dream of showing up someplace and not having the outfit I want.

I spend the entire dream trying desperately to get back to my house so I can get myself ready and look the way I want. Showing up somewhere not prepared or in the proper clothes is what makes me sweat. So when packing for a trip I do everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen.

After several nightmare trips, I’ve learned lots of packing lessons that I want to share so you don’t make the same mistakes!

Nightmare: You get there and the outfit you thought was going to be fabulous doesn’t fit right.

So you have your list of where you’re going and you have outfits in mind. Lay them out and try EVERYTHING on.

I used to just piece together what I thought would work, then I’d end up getting to my destination and something wouldn’t fit right. Or the outfit would need one small tweak to make it amazing…but I left whatever it was at home.

Trying on will help you have peace of mind and will point out holes in your style plan that you can fix before you leave.

Nightmare: You have an event to get to as soon as you arrive, but your clothes come out all wrinkled.

Avoid a majority of wrinkles by wrapping clothes in tissue paper. The paper helps prevent some of the friction between the clothes that causes wrinkles and you’re saved or at least, not as much of a wrinkly mess. It’s not fool-proof, but it helps!

Nightmare: No jeans.

On a trip to Vegas a couple years ago, I packed nothing but maxi dresses and skirts to beat the heat, but by the end of the week really missed my jeans. Always, always pack your favorite jeans. I don’t have to sell you on jeans as a whole, so just learn from my mistake and pack them!

Nightmare: You have too much to pack and not enough room.

First of all, after you lay everything out, edit down to reality. Every single time I lay out what I think I need for a trip, I then walk through the trip in my head and realize several pieces are overkill. Once you’ve done that and you still have too many things, use compression bags. Put everything in a giant Ziploc compression bag, suck the air out of it and enjoy a well styled trip!

Nightmare: You get cold easily but don’t have room for a jacket.

Pack scarves! They’re not only super light weight and easy to get down to a tiny ball, but they’ll also be a great addition to any outfit you’ve already worn on the trip, giving you a fresh look (not to mention the warmth one would bring on a cool summer night)!

Want more from this packing genius? Perfect! I’ve got tips that improved my packing,  what to pack for a quick summer getaway, and packing for people with brain farts (that’s an extra special post, as I announce my first segment on WBIR, which was five years ago this Thursday!)

Tips that Improved My Packing

how to pack, the best way to pack, wbir, beauty blogger, knoxville beauty blogger, knoxville fashion blogger, elizabeth ogle, how to pack for summer trips, the best way to pack

How not to pack is high on the list of things I’ve learned from Past Elizabeth.

It’s quickly followed by “how not to pluck your eyebrows in high school”, “how not to talk to boys in your Road-Runner voice” and so on and so forth.

You’ll hear my first packing mantra in the video, but thankfully things have changed (my Eyebrows and Social Life say, “THANK GOD”).

Here is the step-by-step packing process I follow now, watch the video for additional tips YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT (I mean, I put it in all caps so it’s legit).

1. Walk yourself through your entire trip.

I thought I was a great packer, sitting in the car/plane all smug in my efficiency, but then I would get out of the shower, and need to sit in a group to discuss plans for the evening and would have to do so in my pj’s or fancy maxi dress.

Lesson learned: Walk through every step you can think of so you can have a comfortable and public appropriate leisure outfit (that could double as workout clothes if the buffet strikes too often).

2. Lay everything out then start editing down by outfits that go with the least amount of shoe-age.

I used to think I needed multiple wedges because I wasn’t about to sacrifice style for space! …Then I would end up wearing one pair only once.

Lesson learned: Pack according to your favorite most comfortable shoes (and only a few of them). You always walk more than you think you will on a trip, so pack comfortable shoes. And having just a few pairs to match to will really help refine your outfit choices and make you an overall more efficient packer. Here’s how to pick your best shoe team.

3. Add your accessories on top.

I used to pack up my clothes then go through my jewelry and pick it separately. Invariably I would miss an outfit and feel naked without the right accessories.

Lesson learned: Put your jewelry on top of each outfit you’re going to wear so you can visualize the whole look and have exactly what you need when you arrive. You can still put all your jewelry in its own bag, but this way you’ll be totally prepared.

PS: A crossbody bag (like the one pictured above) is your best purse choice – wearing it around your body makes it harder to be stolen. Just dishing out the cold hard facts.

How to Pick Your Best Shoe Team

When you’re traveling away from all the luxuries of home, you’ve got to make sure your shoe game is on point. That plus the fact that you’ve only got so much room in the suitcase, means you have to pick the best and the brightest from your team of shoes!

Are you with me!? Ok let’s DO THIS.

packing shoes, shoes, what shoes to pack, vacation packing, summer shoes, summer shoe packing, packing for a getaway, how to pack

Here’s what qualifies a player to make the cut…

1. Versatility

Versatility is number one for a reason – it’s the most important factor. My neon pointy toe heels may look super chic and fabulous with that striped shirt dress, but if that’s the only thing they go with then they’re not worth the real-estate. My nude gladiator sandals on the other hand, will work with all five dresses in my suitcase.

Nude Gladiator Sandals, you’re in!

2. Comfort

Whether we’re packing for a vacation or for a work trip (in my case a couple weeks ago – both) comfort is a necessity. Most of the time you don’t completely know your schedule, so if at any point you end up walking around for hours, you’ve got to have a comfortable option. This means if two players are alike in a category (i.e.: casual sneakers) go with the guy that’s going to support your feet the best and build your outfits around him.

Casual Nike’s, get in there!

3. Bulk

Thirdly and really the least important is the size of your shoe. I have a pair of gladiator wedges that take up a TON of space. But this is a trickier requirement because if it falls within the confines of the first two (for example, if these wedges are really comfortable and if they’re going to go with a lot) then they make it on the team, but if they don’t fulfill any of those requirements then they’re first to get the boot. Again, if it comes down to two or three options and you just can’t decide – check to see which one will take up the least amount of space and go with it.

These rules don’t just apply to packing either. Versatility and comfort are two big factors when trying to decide whether or not to buy a pair of shoes. Sometimes we can get a little drunk on how cute a pair of shoes is, then wake up the next day after purchasing them to realize they treat our feet like dirt. Don’t fall into that trap. Respect your feet.
