Watching the models strut their stuff Monday night at “Catharsis” an Aaron White fashion show – made me realize that I couldn’t do it. I could not walk that entire way with a serious face. Something would make me laugh and I’d loose it. I just know that I would.

Good thing they let the professionals do all the modeling Monday night because they did a great job! I so enjoyed a night out with my friend Avi (pictured) and noted a thing or two for future fashion inspiration that I want to share with you…

Note how the bold shoe modernized this vintage polka dot dress.

The first designer to show was Teri Clark who is a wardrobe specialist and brought these pieces as part of a vintage collection. So this dress is vintage, but fooled us into thinking it was current simply because of the shoes.

Lesson One: If you want to update your wardrobe – start with your shoes.

Next was this stunning dress (still apart of the Teri Clark collection). It was another round of polka dots (which is to be read in an excited tone, not a whine) BUT the thing I loved most about this dress is that it included a subtle detail that set me to exclaiming out loud – “There are stripes!”

See the up close picture? Isn’t that so cool!? The subtle stripes done in the gorgeous blue was a perfect answer to the playful cut of this dress. The whole thing was just perfection. It showed me that I needn’t pass over something just because it’s not in my black and white wheelhouse.

Lesson Two: If you often buy the same pattern, try it in other colors.

A bold color paired with a bold color isn’t something I’m used to doing, unless by the first bold color you mean black and the second one white.

But when I saw this color combo it was energizing. And it works. If you think about it – the green of a stem is paired with all kinds of beautiful flower colors and we never question it or wince at it. Because IT WORKS.

Lesson Three: Try an unexpected color combination this spring.

Another designer of the evening was Elite Pour La Vie with a bevy of gowns worth swooning over. You can see more in the story highlights on my Instagram profile under “spiffy fashion”.

I wanted to point this number out…

This sparkly jumpsuit is a BEAUTIFUL answer to a cocktail dress. And think of how versatile it is… Because it’s pants you could wear it to a less formal event like a wedding or a dinner party, but because it’s all sequins and cut so beautifully it could also work at a black tie affair. Nice.

Lesson Four: Stop reaching for the same cocktail dress.

Finally, are some fun shots from back stage. Uh those baggies are a great way to organize jewelry for a fashion show AND when packing for a trip (bonus lesson number 5).

One Piece Four Ways (Part 2)

These two looks with the vest, are my favorite (shhh, don’t tell the looks from the other day).

I absolutely love Piko tops, so to be able to wear it a little differently layered under this vest makes me happy. It especially makes me happy Monday morning getting ready for work when I want to stay in bed in my pj’s. This Piko look is one giant plate of waffles and TV remote away from that kind of comfort.

On the show this week I gave some tips on how to really have an efficient closet. Efficient both money-wise and getting-out-the-door-wise (which isn’t a grammatical thing, but you get it).

Watch the quick segment to see how to best shop for great deals and get good use out of what you own!

For the first several months of my marriage, I had to keep explaining I wasn’t going out and partying at night.

Around 10pm, while my husband would be watching TV in bed, I would be changing out of my pajama’s and into a sparkly top and jeans, or a skirt, tights and a blazer. After several bewildered looks from both him and the dog, I explained I was prepping outfits for the coming week.

I learned a long time ago that deciding what to wear minutes before I’m supposed to leave, is not how I best operate. At least not on a regular basis. And especially now that I’m a mom and have another human being to get out the door.

Having that quiet time to just try on clothes and be creative is how I walk out the door, fully confident and in love with everything I’m wearing.

It’s also how I’m able to get the most use out of what’s in my closet. Like this sweater vest! Here I’ve created two completely different outfits out of the same piece. It’s a cozy piece that’s perfect for this wish-washy weather we’re having.

With a great black and white pattern, it livens up my neutrals/solid colors and can obviously go form comfy to business causal with a few tweaks.

(I’ve got two more (totally different) outfits with this vest coming at you tomorrow, too!)

This plays into that post I did about tweaking your brand. In order to polish your style this year, you’ve got to give your looks a little bit of time.

And I understand, not everyone pees a little bit from excitement when it comes to creating outfits. That’s not something I do at all, for sure. Without question, not me uh uh, no no. Weeeird.

Anytime you’ve got about 20 minutes on your hands, get in your closet and play around. No pressure. No judgement. Just try stuff on!

And don’t feel like you should do it every week. Think about the next event you have coming up. Maybe a baby shower, or a dinner out with friends. Try it with that! Sure, it takes 20 minutes now, but the day of the event, it will save you even more time than that. And you get to choose something while you’re totally relaxed and without the pressure of time. You might even enjoy it.

Until then, follow me on Pinterest and Instagram for more outfit ideas, and gorgeous pictures by Sarah Moser!

Coming up this week…more outfits with the vest and money saving tips to help you have great style and a FULL bank account!

Here are other vests like the one I’m wearing (which came from Target).
