This Girl

Say hello to Elianna Elizabeth!

She came into this world about a month ago with a head full of hair that we snuggle every day (it’s so soft!).

While she didn’t take as long to get into this world as her brother did, she did ring in with a head a full inch bigger than his. Lordy, my children and their giant heads.

Speaking of her brother he’s totally in love. He runs to the nursery when I’m changing her to help soothe her cries and tries to talk to her in the same baby voice we do which is always hilarious.

Life with a girl is different in so many ways already. I’m still getting used to putting together little girl outfits that are littered with bows (I’m so not used to bows). But I’m having fun translating my style for her which will only get easier as she grows.

Postpartum dressing has been a little easier this round. I was more prepared for what to expect with a post-baby body this time. I would love to write more about that later, because in all my searching there wasn’t much out there for postpartum style advice.

Until then, enjoy these pictures of our little doll and stay tuned for more Spiffy content!

PS: I can’t say enough about Taryn Yager Photography. She is a magician when it comes to children and getting them to smile for the camera and her pictures are individual masterpieces. I can never pick just one!

A Spiffy Girl

When I say we’re going to need a bigger closet, I mean it.

elianna

This week we announced news we’ve been relishing in ourselves for almost three months now – we’re having another baby!

I was excited to get all the details out at the same time – the fact that it’s a girl and her name is Elianna (middle name TBD).

The idea that I’ll be dropping “Dude” and Dinosaurs for “her” and bows (also TBD, haha I’m trying to work up a love for bows currently) is still settling in, however, she is truly an answer to prayer and I am resting in the fact that God will equip me to be a mother to this little sweetheart.

I’ve had this name picked out for over 15 years – before I even knew my husband. In Hebrew it means, “God has answered.” And boy, is that spot on! We’ve been believing for another baby and He has answered in the perfect way.

There’s so much more I can say but I’m still in processing mode so it’s not coming out as smoothly as I’d like.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing in our excitement!

Two is the Magic Number

2 is how old my child will be next week.

2 is the number of posts I am away from a full 1500 posts.

That’s a lot of big two’s.

I’m excited about two-year-old Jackson. It will be anything but terrible. I’ve enjoyed every step of the way with him, so getting to hear him talk more and laugh more and form his own jokes (as he’s starting to do) is very exciting.

I’m also excited about having that many blog posts under my belt. Blogging is a weird thing, and the idea of it sure has changed since I first started back in 2010. But I’m proud of what I do and I’m excited to see where all the world of blogging goes in my next 1500 posts.

Enjoy your weekend!

Your Body After Baby

body after baby, knoxville beauty blogger, how to work out throughout your day, post-baby body

As I write this I’ve got my 7-month-old strapped to the front of me. At times I can’t see my computer screen because of his head (and yet it’s the most productive moment I’ve had, and will continue to be if I ignore the fact that I’ve got to pee and that my computer’s about 15 minutes away from loosing all battery).

I’ve got a fresh perspective on a body after baby and I just wanted to share with you the three things that have helped me to maintain balance and motivation. I hope it helps!

1. Give yourself a break.

A human is walking, wobbling or crawling around this planet because you grew them inside of you and then got them out. That’s “amaze-balls” – remember that.

In the months before having a baby, I never prepared myself for what post-baby body would be like. I bought a few pieces to wear around the house when visitors came, but otherwise there was no wardrobe preparation because I was sure I would shrink back down to my original size.

When it didn’t happen as quickly as I had planned, I started sliding down a slope of self depreciation. And when I say “sliding down a slope” there were moments of straight drops to the ground as I thought of all the pants I would have to neglect because I couldn’t wiggle my butt into them.

Then I talked it out with my husband. Really just talking it out helpedbut afterwards he reminded me that I needed to give myself a break. I’ve HAD A BABY. The body takes time to get over that and I wasn’t doing myself any favors by getting in fear over it.

After that, the fear and panic stopped and I was able to just relax. I even lost a little weight, and I think it’s directly because I stopped getting in fear about it.

2. Then hit the gas.

Once I truly found myself balanced out and done with stressing over my size, break time was over.

I had to wait till I got to the point of not being stressed about my weight to start working on it again. If not, I would have tried too hard and at the smallest sign of failure I would have melted down into a pile of Cheetos, gained more weight from the melt down, then started the cycle all over again.

Waiting until you’ve leveled out and gotten rid of all those roller coaster post-baby hormones is the best thing you can do. Once it’s no longer a fear-based workout or fear-based calorie counting, you’ll be able to relax and honestly loose more weight.

3. Always be thankful.

The biggest thing I’ve learned in this whole process? Be thankful.

Regardless of your size, your shape, your lumps or post-baby belly, be thankful for your body and who God created you to be.

Look in the mirror and find what it is you love about yourself. I stopped critiquing my post-baby butt and started owning it. I mean, it just won’t quit! *hive five.

Stop always seeing the negative things about your body and realize you are beautiful just as you are. I’m serious. Because there’s someone out there who is heavier than you are, wishing they were your size (just watch TLC).

Give yourself a break, relax about your body and just own it.

Quit talking about it, or pointing out your flaws to others. Replace that constant barrage of negative thoughts with what the bible has to say about you here, and replace the thoughts that you can’t loose the weight with this.

Look at that baby of yours (no matter how old they are) and envision them saying about their body what you think about yours – it makes you want to hold them close and tell them to stop it!

It’s no different then you saying that about yourself. Stop it. Be thankful and enjoy being you!

How I Found the Best Diaper Bag

The original title of this post was “The Best Diaper Bag Ever” but really, it’s not. I’ll get to that a little later…

Probably one of the first daunting things to buy for a baby was a diaper bag. So I did my research. In fact I probably over did my research.

When it’s your first kid, you really don’t know what you need. You think you know what you need, but you really don’t figure it out till later (true with a diaper bag / true in LIFE).

I don’t lean towards girly stuff and a lot of nice bags had girly prints, bows, etc. Not only was that not my style, but it also hurt the chances of my husband ever picking up the bag in public (plus I knew deep down the whole time we were having a boy).

I made a list of my top priorities…

  1. Pockets – but not copious amounts
  2. A nice print that wasn’t like anything I owned but would still flow with my closet
  3. Wipe-able *insert smiling poop emoji
  4. Medium size – I didn’t want to carry the stretch hummer of diaper bags
  5. Cross-body – it’s just better for your back and it looks cool, yo

After all my searching I settled on one bag. It was taupe and fit every requirement. The only drawback was seeing it in person (something I highly recommend for any important purchase) it was very cheaply made. And even though I was willing to shell out some cash for something I liked, quality was certainly a strong requirement (add that to the list).

Then one day I came across the perfect bag – for me. And here’s why I didn’t name this “The Best Diaper Bag Ever.” This bag is the best ever for me. It may not be the best for you. My goal with this post was for you to see my process so you can make your own list of requirements and start searching from there.

This system works for really any kind of purchase where you have a lot of options, not just diaper bags.

If you want a diaper bag recommendation, this little beauty by Skip*Hop is perfection. Just enough pockets inside and out (the outside ones magnetically close), not so large that I loose things in it, but large enough to hold his bottles and extra clothes; this print goes with EVERYTHING (it’s wipe-able) and it can be carried as a cross-body.

Done. Check.
