How I Completed An Old New Year’s Resolution

What month is it? Not January. So why am I using the words “new year’s resolution”? Keep reading…

For the past, oh I don’t know…10 years I’ve had “read more books” on my list of resolutions for the year.

Well, there was a bit of a progression…

2008: “Read more books.”

2010: “Read books.”

2012: “Read a book – any book.”

2014: “READ FOUR SENTENCES STRUNG TOGETHER.”

Once I had a baby I just gave up…

2016: “Read a warning label on a toy and we’ll call it a day.”

This year, something changed. I started the year reading a small book. And the fact that I had a thing in my hand that I had read all the way through showed me something.

It showed me that I have the time to read. I used to think there’s just so way I can squeeze in a book – I should be blogging! I should be doing the dishes! I should be teaching my kid everything he needs to know – ever!

Instead, I let him play in his room while I sat there and read. Even if it was for a ten minute stretch, it was wonderful. Eventually, that ten minutes turned into 30 and yadda, yadda, yadda, I finished the book.

I’m now starting my 8th book for the year. And I’ve read everything from books on faith to how to master getting dressed. I’ve watched my vocabulary shoot up to what it used to be (I’ve been an avid reader all my life till about 10 years ago). And I’ve seen myself become a better wife, mother and believer.

I’m telling you all of this for two reasons…

One, I’m going to occasionally give you a synopsis of the books I’ve read. There are some that are too good not to share.

And two…I want to encourage you that it doesn’t matter if it’s reading, exercising, cooking – whatever it may be that you don’t think you can fit into your life, you can. Just do it #Nike. Make the time for it in a small way, and watch that time reproduce more time until you have a whole time family on your hands.

Maybe you want to read more blogs…I can help with that *sly grin.
