It’s not often that you’ll see the letters “DIY” in the title of on my posts, so enjoy it while you can.
Not that I’m against “doing it myself.” In fact, I lean too heavily on doing everything myself, but that’s a whole other subject.
I would love to do more DIY projects, but, you know, life.
I’ve had this pair of gray jeans for a long…long time. I bought them at New York and Co. many moons ago but I’ve hung onto them because they’re comfortable and the only pair of gray jeans in my arsenal.
Side note: something else to explore about my psyche is my quenchless thirst for jeans. I tell you, I could buy a new pair everyday.
While I came close to throwing these in the giveaway pile many times, I started thinking of taking the scissors to them. They’ve always been a little too long so I can cut out that problem. And I’ve been wanting another pair of distressed knee pants so why not create them and save myself some cash.
So here’s how I did it…
Step One: Try on the jeans and mark where you want to cut. Use chalk!
What I learned: Trying on the jeans after every cut really helped me take my time and not cut too much off. So I would recommend putting them on after you’ve cut one leg and then the other so you can edit as you go.
Step Two: Cut below where you’ve marked.
What I learned: If I could do anything different, I would have not cut as much off so I could cuff them more. Cuffing also helps hide the fact that you cut like a drunk person – or maybe that’s me. ;)
Step Three: Pull at where you’ve cut to bring out the distressed look.
Afterwards, I decided to only cut one knee. I may change my mind on that, but I feel like less is more.
I plan on wearing these with black tank tops, deep pink work out shirts and black Nike’s, and a simple white shirt with layered necklaces.
If you don’t want to do it yourself, here’s a pair of distressed gray-ish jeans you can buy!
