The Guide to a Figure-Flattering Easter Dress

The trick to writing a guide of any sort is research. And if there’s ever been an Easter where I’ve done extensive dress research, it’s this one.

I will be 5 months pregnant by the time Easter gets here, which means I don’t know what my body will look like. On top of which, I’m in the Easter program at church, which means I have to find a dress that meets a long list of standards (not to mention my own crazy self-imposed ones).

But man do I love a good clothing challenge.

I started looking for a dress in January, just to start formulating a vision. Once I knew the direction I wanted to go in, I started seriously looking in February and had my dress by early March.

Saying all of that to say, I know my stuff. I know what’s out there and I know what will look good on your body type.

So let’s dive in…

easter dress, west town mall, the limited, express, fiore boutique, cache, white hosue black market, how to buy a dress, what dress to buy for your shape, figure flattering dresses, easter dress shopping, easter, what to wear this easter

The best way to flatter a larger mid-section is by going with a dress that’s waist defining. All three of these options give the illusion that you have a tiny waist whether it be through color blocking, a change in pattern or strategic rouching. Those are the types of things you need to look for in your dress.

And if you want to add a cardigan to the mix, stay away from those that are short and boxy. Go with one that lays a few inches below where you’ve defined your waist, or better yet, choose a structured blazer to give you even more shape.

For a larger bum and hips it’s all about where you’re drawing the eye. First of all, make sure to go with an A-line shape. This shape is flattering on so many body types, but especially yours as it perfectly conceals your lower half. To carry the illusion a step further, opt for a dress that has a pattern/detail on the top half which will instantly draw the eye up.

The White House Black Market dress does a great job of drawing the eye to your neckline with that lace detail; as does the JCP dress by putting that gorgeous blue color on the top half of the dress. And of course the print overlay is just pretty all over on the Fiore dress.

If you’re looking to create a figure, you’ve got some great options as well. Look for dresses with ruffles or pleats to add volume where you need it, but stay away from anything too baggy. You want to show off your slimness while adding volume in all the right places.

The blue dress from Express gives your girls a little help with the pleats in the bust line. The middle dress from The Limited does kind of the same thing but in a cool modern way – I love the illusion of a crop top over a black dress. And by the way, this one would really do a great job showing off a gorgeous statement necklace. Finally, the navy Ann Taylor number defines your tiny waist but gives you a curvy hourglass shape with the addition of those ruffles (the dress has a tiny polka dot pattern too, which I think is so classic).

I wanted to show you that no matter your figure, there is a dress out there that will make you look your best. I purposely stayed away from using words like “flaws” and “problem areas” because you don’t have to look at your body that way. Appreciate what you’re working with, and learn to dress so that you show off what you love most!

These Beauty Products Went to the Head of the Class in 2014

urban decay, makeup setting spray, beauty blender, smashbox, under eye concealer, artistry, dove, hair spray, best beauty products from 2014

Between subscription beauty boxes and new beauty technology, it seems that the beauty product world is taking great strides to make things easier for us all. Pretty soon we’ll be doing the Jane Jetson thing – walk into our closet and a few puff of makeup-laden clouds later, emerge ready to take on the day!
I’m excited to see what 2015 is going to bring, but I’m also very happy to take my favorite products from 2014 into the new year.

Here are my top five favorite beauty product picks from 2014…

Dove Hair Spray
I have tried so many different brands and holds, but this Dove extra hold hair spray that you can pick up at any grocery store, has become my absolute favorite. When I spray it on while I’m styling then again afterwards, I can wake up the next day with the same hair. It also doesn’t crunch up and leaves my hair shiny

Beauty Blender

This little sponge doesn’t look amazing, but once you try it you’ll believe. If you get it a little damp, it expands to twice it size and becomes the absolute best way to apply concealer or really any kind of foundation to your face. It gets right in there and leaves your makeup so smooth.

Artistry Moisturizer and Spot Corrector
This was the year I really decided to spend a little extra on my skin. Because it’s something you’re wearing always so why not invest a little more in it. Their spot corrector actually works, and this moisturizer does a great job of brightening your skin overall. Contact this gal to get you some!

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer
This is a primer that goes under your concealer. It automatically brightens your under eye area just by itself, and it helps your concealer stay put. I just started using this and I’m impressed by it. You can pick it up at Sephora or Dillard’s.

Urban Decay Makeup Setting Spray
I am addicted to this stuff. It just provides the perfect pick-me-up mist in the middle of the day and really helps set my makeup. On the days I use it I can tell a difference on my face. My makeup doesn’t look so tired. And if you get the big bottle it will last you a long time. This one has lasted me a full year.

How to Receive Lots of Compliments

Today I’d like to take a slightly different approach to the series on compliments I’ve been doing (you can see other posts about it here and here).

I know that receiving a compliment is something some women struggle with, but some times we can have problems on the other end – fishing for them. I’ve been in many a scenario with other women where they were doing everything but literally reaching down my throat to pull out praise, and needless to say that can be awkward (and not very tasty).

What’s more is if you go fishing for a compliment, the reward is never ever as sweet as when you get one that’s fresh and sincere.

So what is a girl to do if she wants lots of compliments but doesn’t often receive them?

compliments

Two words: compliment others.

I am 1,000% certain of this, that if you begin to compliment others – even strangers – you will in turn get paid compliments back. I practice this constantly in my own life. Words of encouragement are a big part of how I receive love, so I make it a point to compliment someone on something I think is pretty, whether I know them or not.

The Bible tells us that the concept of seed time and harvest will always exist, which means if you’ll sow seeds of compliments, you’ll get many in return. I do! I’m all the time getting complimented from strangers. Every time it happens, it brightens my day!

Rest assured that’s not the only reason I tell you I like something. It’s because I know how uplifting it is to hear those encouraging words, and that makes me want to offer the same happiness to someone else (whether they say, “Thank you” or not!)

Caring for Your Jeans

You may choose to laugh at what I’m about to say and think that I’m making it up, but I assure you I’m not.

Most of the time when I get finished with a segment on TV, that day or the next I’ll find an article in a magazine or online sharing the very same information I had talked about on the show. I’m not saying the editors of Lucky or that Bobbie Thomas herself is hanging on my every word waiting to see what they should write about next (although it wouldn’t surprise me *she says with an obnoxious amount of swagger). I just think it’s pretty cool, and a testament to how awesome God is.

What does God have to do with a bi-weekly beauty segment, you wonder? Well when I got the email asking if I’d be on the show (two years ago this month!), after I finished dancing, jumping, screaming, smiling, I told God that I never wanted it to be a burden. I never wanted to stress about what I was going to talk about on the show, I wanted it to always be something I enjoyed doing and not a new avenue of frustration. And I can confidently say, two years into it He has been faithful to show me what to talk about next, I’ve never ever once stressed about a topic.

That’s because He never fails, and He wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives. He’s not some far off God sitting on a thrown with a baseball bat in hand playing wack-a-mole with us here on earth. He’s intently loving us, hoping that we’ll turn to Him for every little thing so He can show up strong. If you ever want more stories about His faithfulness, I’ve got 1,000 :)

Here’s the sentence in Lucky magazine that triggered that whole thought process. I read this eating breakfast after the show yesterday and couldn’t help but smile…”Boyfriend jeans…are the latest denim must-haves.” !!

Now watch for some great ways to preserve your new favorite pair of jeans!

Outfits to get you Through the End of Summer

Today I want to give you my secret to putting great outfits together at the end of a season.

It’s especially hard for me at the end of summer, because, well we all know-fall’s my favorite.

And because right now it’s a little too early for boots, scarves and sweaters, I use this little trick to keep myself interested:

Now is the time I pull out all my summer favorites and wear them again.

By wearing what I love about summer, it keeps me dressed appropriately and getting more wear out of what I might miss in a few weeks.

This striped maxi dress is especially my favorite because it’s so versatile and perfect for office wear this time of year! I’ll wear it alone like this with a bright sweater…

Or I’ll throw up my hair up, a t-shirt on and some polka dot earrings for meetings or just running errands.

I love having a piece like this that can transform as my day does, and will certainly miss it when fall does roll around (it will be a short lived miss, but still a yearning none the less).

What do you plan on re-wearing till it gets cool out?!
